1 edit | [TWC] Cincinnati RR now offers new tier
Let Cincinnati be the second locality to offer 6MB service. I got the e-mail today for Roadrunner Premium. $69.95 a month gets 6000/512 service. So tempting, but so much money!
I can't find many details, but there is a FAQ on TWCinci.com:

| reply to yock Wow, I wonder what the other franchises will be coming up with. Looks like Verizon is coming out with a 3mbit tier now...hopefully this sparks more competition. -- Artificial intelligence is no match for natural stupidity! l Check out Football Freaks |

| reply to yock It sounds like a good deal to me. Forum visitors from a while back may recall the RR EXtreme tests in various markets, which had TW pricing that at 79.99~99.99 per month. For them to now come out with this at this price is a good deal compared to that. -- The life you help save just might be your own Team Discovery |

| reply to yock I'm not going for it. There are no services on the Internet that really warrant a 6 Mbit/s download.... Broadband video RARELY exceeds 1 Mbit/s, Big downloads will come in just fine with 3 Mbit/s as I don't do big downloads all that much anyways, and P2P programs don't even reach 3 Mbit/s in most cases, so why bother??
I am not a Usenet freak that needs to get all the latest copyrighted materials, I rarely use P2P nowadays, and I am the only person in house playing online games, my wife only surfs the net and does her e-mail
The upload increase is very little, not a doubled speed like the download. Since I determined I do not need the double speed, the price is way too high for a puny 128 kbit/s increase in upload speed.
I may as well go for a 3072/768 DSL deal if I want more upload..... For the same price as RR cable! Only reason I have been hesitating to get DSL is that I saw the MESS in the 40 yr old home I am in, and the phone wires are just OLD and unreliable. Phone service works perfectly. The price is just too high for me to consider it. -- And i'm right. I'm always right, but this time I'm a little more right then I usually am. |

Twice that may warrant the price difference, but you'll never see that on cable until DOCSIS 2.0. |

Well, you can kind of get it now in OOL territory, but they yank it away from you if you use it too much. |

| 6000/512 for $70/mth? Too much money. Most people have trouble saturating a 3000 connection, let alone a 6000 connection. About the only reason to take the deal is for the increased upload and DSL is beating that.
If RR decided to offer OOL speeds for $45/mth, people would jump to them like there was no tomorrow. |

| reply to yock We are still paying $39.95/month here for 3000/384. Charge me $49.95 for 6000/512 and I will have no problem with that price. $69.95 is out of the question. Is anyone from RR listening ? |

It depends on your RoadRunner Franchise - I know many users who run servers but not to the point where they are sucking up line card bandwidth, otherwise some franchises just don't mind. -- ~Ladies & Gentlemen, There is a Manhattan-Bound (4) Express Train Approaching Nostrand Avenue - For your safety, please stand clear of Platform Yellow-Strip~ |

I suspect they'll adjust the price once they realize they're not seeing the numbers like they thought. Like I said before, I believe $44.95/mo is already too much as it is. The internet is a luxury for this poor college boy right now, they're lucky they're the only game in town for me. They basically set the prices for all the other services that piggyback on their lines, seeing as how they charge x amount for those companies to use their lines. It's all one gigantic monopoly. |

You would be very surprised at what more upstream bandwidth would do to your connection stability. |

Only if you're lucky enough to practically live at the CO. At my location, the best DSL I'm going to see is 384/256. No thank you. |

I agree that it's not worth it. They are crazy imo to try to make us pay that when we're already paying too much as it is. You sure though that you can't get that speed without DOCSIS 2.0? I might be mistaken but my bf who has Cogeco cable up in Ontario gets around 5000/600 and his modem is old as the hills and some weird brand no one has heard of (circa 2000), surely not Docsis 2.0 compliant? |

Gericurlswrl: man it's refreshing to see a non-fanboy on this forum. My thoughts *exactly*. Up in the great white north they get twice as fast speeds than us for less than we pay now. Competition is *not* what caused them to increase speeds, they just did it. Unfortunately from reading a lot of other posts about the premium service it looks like the majority of people (at least on here) would be more than happy to shell out the $70 and some felt it necessary to say they'd pay even $100/month for those speeds... yeah i think it's nuts too and it doesn't bode well for us regular folk. |

My understanding is that we are getting a Lite tier before this tier you are speaking of. I may go for the Lite tier depending on the price as I don't want to pay $45 and I was happy with 2ms down. I think the Lite tier will be less than that though...if it is 1500 down and a good price, I'll go for it. If I could get DSL, I would have already left RR. My friend just left RR for DSL at a much lower speed and he's happy. He's away from the lousy customer service that characterizes TW here. -- "Everything can be taken from a man or woman but one thing: the last of the human freedoms - to choose one's attitude in any given set of circumstances, to choose one's destiny."
