said by boomertsfx : You don't need a phone line for directv (unless you want to order PPV). Sure, TiVo will nag you once a day after a month of not being able to dial, but it will still work.
Or you could do what I did and install a TurboNet card and the tivo will phone home over the internet.
The TiVo side will, but the DirecTV (PPV/access card) side won't.
For a DirecTV DVR ("DirecTiVo") --
- (most) guide updates come via satellite, no phone call required (although the receiver *will* complain after awhile) - TiVo showcases, etc. are obtained via phone -- this is the ONLY thing a TurboNet will fix - DirecTV receiver "phones home" by phone

@68.190.x.x | Anyone using P8 with a standard Directv receiver?
Does the quick 2400 baud call work when the unit calls home? |

You dont need a phoneline, MAYBE for the first time you use it, but thats about it (I cant remember if I had to or not). You need to find "TivoScripts" aka "Sleeper's ISO" which is a bootable CD. It will install a hack so that the tivo wont dial in or nag you, among other things it also installs network drivers so you can use a USB-> ethernet device as well as a hack (which I cant live without) that makes the ->| button skip forward 30 seconds, instead of going to the end.
But you have to open the TiVO and your best bet is to have a 2nd harddrive so you can go back to the first one in case you mess something up. |
