Re: direct tv tivo with broadvoice

That only works on Series 1 directivos. He has a new, series 2 directivo like me. The expansion slot is no more. We have USB ports but tivo and directv haven't activated them yet. You can hack the box to get them activated but that's a different thread altogether.

Looks like I am going back to verizon.. is there a cheap phone service for unlimited local and long distance? I just signed up for around $80 for unlimited Local and regional and 5 cents a minute long distance and also DSL service.. totally ditching comcast....

just need to find a better pots plan.. any ideas?

Im still gonna keep my broadvoice line but disconnect my vonage line..

I have DirecTivo and I'm getting ready to deal with this issue because I am planning on dumping SBC once and for all when I get VOIP stabilized.

Right now, it sounds like Vonage has made a change to better support fax/modem. Apparently *99 prepares the line for incoming fax/modem and several people have had successful calls using Vonage. Check out:

Perhaps this is a fix by Vonage, perhaps not -- I have no idea what logic might be in the Motorola TA to resend packets.

The better approach that isn't out there yet is T.38. From what I've read, Broadvox Direct plans on rolling out T.38 with a new ATA device in July (I think).

A short-term solution is to just not use DirectTivo with a phone line and put up with annoyance screen. I've read that some people have gone over a year from their DirecTivo without having it phone home.

The last resort for me would be keeping a POTS line and using VOIP. SBC charges $9.50 for caller ID, $5.00 for privacy manager, $20.00 for long distance in addition to straight service. That's a total of $34.50 in addition to basic phone service. I can do better than $34.50 with a VOIP provider and get a bunch more features. So $27 a month for full VOIP service and ~$20 for basic service for 911 and DirecTivo. Total $47 is still cheaper than my SBC plan for $70 (including fees) that gives me features I want. Now if you're getting a good package with DSL + POTS, then that's a different story. SBC isn't offering anything attractive here in Texas.

What I really hope is that T.38 can be done with the Sipura (does anybody know if this is impossible?), and to have all of the services roll out T.38 as a protocol that can be activated with a code (like *99) and resolve this fax/modem issue once and for all.
