eTrust Antivirus, no email scanning

I am thinking about leaving Norton Antivirus and going with eTrust EZ Antivirus. I have learned that eTrust does not have inbound/outbound email scanning. I have ZoneAlarm Pro 4.5 with inbound and outbound MailSafe Email protection. Would enabling MailSafe makeup for eTrust's lack of email scanning? Does MailSafe provide reliable email scanning/protection?

Even if an antivirus doesn't specifically scan an email client. It should in fact be able to still protect you as long as it is running in real time. As long as you either scan the file before running it or when and if a user tries to execute the malicious code. Also keep in mind that ZoneLabs will be releasing a product with Computer Associates ( the maker of eTrust ) antivirus in the near future »ZoneLabs Antivirus Suite beta

I am using AVG Free and eTrust as backup. This from the eTrust Help:
" eTrust EZ Antivirus’s Real-Time protection checks and cleans any infected e-mail attachments when you open them. You can also Save the attachment to the hard disk and scan it using the main eTrust EZ Antivirus program. To check that Real-Time protection is enabled, move the pointer over the eTrust EZ Antivirus symbol in the system tray (located in the bottom right of the taskbar near the clock). "

As IGGY advises, email upload/download scanning is not required by any antivirus. But if you feel you need it, note that EZ Antivirus 6.2.x is due out shortly and will have an email scanner.

I am using EZ Trust Anti Virus ver 6.1.7.0 and it stopped an email the other day that contained a virus in a zipped attachment. I believe it was one of the Mydoom variants. It notified me that it contained a virus and deleted it automatically.

I have heard about this new ZoneLabs product that includes antivirus coming out in the future. Is it going to be a new product or an upgrade for ZoneAlarm Pro? I currently have ZoneAlarm Pro 4.5 with 346 days left on subscription. I am leaning toward getting EZ Antivirus for now because I don't want to install Norton AntiVirus on my new computer. After my subscription to ZoneAlarm Pro runs out I'll get the ZoneLabs suite if price is right and if the antivirus is proven reliable. I always like ZoneAlarm Pro as a firewall, but I tend to prefer that my firewall and antivirus be seperate programs.

I used the predecessor to eTrust (InoculateIT Personal Edition (IPE)) for a couple of years; I then purchased eTrust. I now use NOD32 and don't have email scanning installed. I do just fine and don't need the email scanning, as both programs will "catch" a nasty when you try to open it.

You could add "Mailwasher" ( there is a free and a pro ) to your system as an added security .
Apart from that no anti virus will stop all the "crud " that can come through the mail , and relies on the latest update which may or may not be "out in time "
If one wanted real good email security then perhaps one would take their security a little bit further with some thing like "Benign" . ( very wise seeing 95% of mailicious crud comes thru the mail)

Well my choice of antivirus will take that challenge any day and win. That said there is never going to be 100% security solution. An antivirus updated and running in real time is a must no matter your surfing habits.

As to how ZoneLabs will release the suite. I'm not sure. As I've posted in several other threads I don't work for the company so I'm not privy to there marketing strategy. I do know that antivirus updates will be included for the length of the license you buy for the suite.

To answer that part of the post, I would just note that I consider MailSafe (or a similar AV or mail filter feature) an essential part of layered AV security. It just quarantines EVERY potentially executable attachment it can see. As far as I know it's pretty reliable; there have been a few vulnerabilities that were addressed in older versions, and there is a brand new reported vulnerability discussed at »Zone Alarm email bypass .

The reason I like it so much is that it takes all the guesswork and praying and waiting (for decent AV signature updates) out of dealing with e-mail-borne malware. If it "honks like a duck", that is, if it's an executable attachment, it gets quarantined, period.

On the other hand, it does NOT try to identify malware by name, if that's important to you. And it of course is blind in quaranting ALL executable attachments, even those you want.

Edit: MailSafe in the free version is useless and should be ignored.

EZ AV V6.2 mentioned by Allyn_P See Profile in his post, is currently undergoing beta testing. One new feature which it boasts is email scanning and from reports by a few of the testers, it works well. So if you're not in a hurry, hang around as this update will probably be released soon.

I checked eTrust EZ Antivirus and it cost 24.95 for one year of updates. What is the renewal rate? Does the renewal rate include both the product updates (virus definitions), and product upgrades?

Also, eTrust is giving eTrust EZ Armor for free. It says that it includes EZ Antivirus and EZ Firewall. From what I know, EZ Firewall is just ZoneAlarm Pro under eTrust's name. I already have ZoneAlarm Pro 4.5. My main question is does EZ Armor contain a full version EZ Antivirus or is it a "light" version?

The version of the eTrust EZ Armor free offer that I took advantage of in Nov. 2003 comes with EZ Antivirus ver. 6.1.7.0 and EZ Firewall ver. 3.7.179. The Firewall program also has the MailSafe program which scans and quarantines email attachments. EZ AV monitors executing programs, opening and closing files in real-time.
