| aol browser problem
I believe AOL 9.0 must be ran on a server now or something. Almost 90% of the time when i try to access a member's profile pictures, or when i try to use the aol browser to look up a webpage, or let's say when i even try to use AOL Radio, or when i try to access easy editor to build my homepage, or my picture albums, etc.. 90% of the time nothing will display. i can never seem to load anything. does anybody have this problem? i called up aol and it said aol 9.0 is server based or something and told me to open up some ports on my firewall. i tried that but it still doesnt work. the only thing that seems to help is to sign on and off again and keep trying to do that until it finally works. i've got a ton of other problems too that i won't even try to get into.
but aol 9.0 seems to interfer with a lot of other software on my computer. i have to shut down a lot of other programs just to get aol to work.
i don't know if it's just my luck but aol's tech support is not very friendly. i work 50-60 hours a week doing hard physical labor work and these pricks working on the phone seem as if they got it bad. i've had it up to here with their support team. |

| I had a similiar problem with AOl 9.0 running thru my router. Called AOL tech support, and they could not help me! Gave up on AOL 9.0 for a while and kept using 8.0 . Then I had a brain storm and decided to delete all connections in 9.0, and have the computer re-detect the connection devices. Amazingly everything worked fine after that!. AOL tech support guys could not figure that out I guess?? Hopefully that will work for you! |

Aol has always been run on servers. What else would they use to store all the data? -- John F. Kerry for President! |

| reply to GenePM ok btw i think i left out the specs here. i have windows xp and i use aol through my own broadband service. it's called capitol broadband wireless cable service. they call it wireless, but i think it's just routed through road runner. i'm using a linksys modem.
ok now hey bigalg. i'm guessing you're using aol for broadband and their actual service including the modem and all? i might be in the wrong place because i was just talking about aol's software. i'm actually using wireless cable modem and i sign on to aol through that. so it could have something to do with that? maybe. i'm not sure. but i doubt it because i have that same problem with their service when i dial up using one of their dial up numbers. i've tried shutting down my firewalls before even loading up aol, and still there's no solution. i love aol don't get me wrong, i've been using aol since 1994. i understand that every service, especially one as big as aol, is going to have problems. it's just their technical support. they read the same rebuttals over to you like a robot and i have a hard time finding a real solution with them.
also one of my biggest problems so far with aol 9.0, is the fact that more than half of the time i load it up, my whole computer reboots. i called aol about this as well, and they told me that it could be interferring with my firewall again. hell i shut down every program i could in my taskbar, and i loaded it back up and again half of the time my computer would either get some kind of blue screen talking about savedump or it would reboot.
i could name a few more problems i have with aol if anybody cares to hear.
i've also had a big problem with the downloads on aol after saving them to my download manager. i'll add about 20 or so items, and then select all and press finish downloads. it will go through about 2 or 3 mails and then it will freeze up. not all the time but 90 % of the time. it's annoying. i never had this problem in the earlier versions.
maybe my problems have something to do with my connection through my wireless cable service. not sure.... it could be b/c i don't think i had as many problems when i was just using plain roadrunner.
i doubt i'll ever find a solution oh well |

| reply to GenePM this could actually be a couple things, let me spit some out. you are saying you are getting memory dumps which can be a serious thing. usual problems with addressing memory or overheating with hardware. i would triple check your resources (either with you pcman or aol system information) remember that aol needs 128mb by itself not counting what the OS uses. i know the next comment will be, this only happens on aol, which might be the case, so let me throw some other things out here. also i would do a system file checker (»www.gadgetopia.com/2004/04/12/Wi···ker.html) better instructions can be found elsewhere too but i just pulled this up. if the os is running into system file problems it doesnt like this should fix that. also it could be that you computer just doesnt like the aol acs (aol connection services) which is not too uncommon. this might be due to crappy programming or not enough troubleshooting with 3rd party software installed as well. does 8.0 work fine? or any other previous versions? this could show the acs is not good which is only in 9.0. they are also going to release 9.0se and le at the end of the month with a new version of acs so you might want to try that when it gets out or goto keyword beta to get it now. i would do that before anything along with getting rid of the router. i would just temporarily disconnect it and see if you get the same results. here is the ports aol uses as well (»www.microsoft.com/security/protect/ports.asp)
let me know how those things go, and i wish you the best of luck. |
