We always win these things.

you do understand that linux is winning....don't you?

That's like adding Nader's votes to Gore's. We could list Mac OS X Server, Darwin for PPC, and Darwin for x86 also, and add those together....

the people that own the versions you listed, voted for Mac OS X/Darwin....in other words, they are already added together. I've used nearly every linux distrobution listed, and 99% of teh time, the only major difference is w/ the package management....whatever distro you use, linux is linux. I don't know why you fail to see that. Hell, gentoo alone has alomost 50% of the osx votes. there are HUNDREDS of LINUX distrobutions. the reason for that is because it's FREE and OPEN. people have the freedom to cutomize it w/ scripts and such, but at the end of the day, we all can compile a LINUX kernel, and use it. here's some info that many fanboys don't(refuse to) realize....

syntax colored fanboy code:
All linux distrobutions == Linux

therefore....

Linux == currently leading this poll

Try this... :-)

#!/usr/bin/ksh
print "Which is your favorite *nix OS? Hint - Solaris"
read ans
while [ $ans != "Solaris" ] ;do
print "$ans Sucks! Try again..."
read ans
done
print "Good, you are learning."

This poll is fairly easy to interpret: Linux has more votes. Sure, OSX is currently the single option with the most votes, but the total of all Linux votes is higher than OSX and the BSD's combined.

Also, OSX is higher than normal since someone in ATM posted a link to vote, even for those who have no idea what UNIX is or that their Mac runs a UNIX kernel.

Either way, it's nice to see OSX gaining popularity. It is somewhat surprising how RedHat/Fedora is no longer the dominant distribution here. It seems that Gentoo/Slackware have replaced RedHat/Mandrake as the majority.

Actually if you add up all the RPM based distros (RedHat, Fedora, Mandrake, SuSE) you still find a significant preference there. Aren't statistics fun

As for the Mac OSX versus Linux stats, this just shows the power of divide and conquer. If there just had been a single Linux option it would be the leader.

Linux pays the bills, too, just not to the same degree. Most of our Linux customers are only a few to a few tens of thousands of dollars a year. Most of our Solaris customers are a few tens to a few millions of dollars a year.

In a few years I'll be voting for AIX because it will pay the bills! I just dumped my knowledge of a very, very ancient Raytheon mainframe and packed in Solaris between my ears, going as far as getting my SCSA, then my work decides that they are going to dump Sun and go with IBM on their next system!

Yeah. We had a few customers decide to go the AIX route. Should be interesting. IBM is supposedly looking to phase out AIX in favor of Linux - morphing the one into the other.

Then again, SGI thought they would combine IRIX and UniCOS into something called Nexis. That never really panned out. Wonder if they'll merge IRIX and Linux. They already port a lot of IRIX code into Linux...

Okay,

#!/usr/bin/ksh
print "Which is your favorite *nix OS? Hint - Solaris"
read ans
while [ $ans != "Solaris" ] ;do
print "$ans Sucks! Try again..."
read ans
done
print "Good, you are learning."

/bin/ksh: syntax error: `do' unexpected

I always do the unexpected, but why does this say this?

I am normally regarded well for my syntax...

I think you typo'ed something. That code block works perfectly fine for me. Well, perfectly fine for the exception of being case sensitive. I'm prone to fits of laziness. If I can't be bothered to capitalize Solaris, this code block will give me the same answer for "solaris" as it does for "Linux" (etc.) It should probably be made case insensitive.

At first, I had the check for upper/lower case word Solaris using the tr command, but that was an extra 2 lines :-)

Here you go...just for you... :-)

#!/usr/bin/ksh
print "Which is your favorite *nix OS? Hint - Solaris"
read ans
ans=`echo $ans | tr "[A-Z]" "[a-z]"`
while [ $ans != "solaris" ] ;do
print "$ans Sucks! Try again..."
read ans
ans=`echo $ans | tr "[A-Z]" "[a-z]"`
done
print "Good, you are learning."

Now it will work even if you type SolaRIs :-)

Re: [Poll] *nix OS of choice

I am having trouble believing that OS X is so popular as a nix os. There are rarley any posts in this forum regarding OS X or darwin. Seems like some voter fraud is going on. If someone did post a link in the mac forum how about posting a link on /.

Someone posted a link in the Mac forum.
I think many of the ATM people ask UNIX questions in the ATM forum since there are UNIX people there as well.

OS-X is my favourite, too bad I can't afford a Mac at the moment

The favourite that I use is FreeBSD

Maybe a little OT but what is darwin like under the covers. What type of file system hierarchy does it utilize? Is there a package management system? Are there binaries available? Does darwin follow the base system philosophy of the bsd's?
