[XP Home] Slow boot/updates not showing

Recently had this problem... On a hard startup, my computer will get through the XP Startup screen (with the progress bar) but then show a blank screen for about 5-10 minutes before my desktop shows up. Occasionally I get just the mouse icon before the rest of my dektop shows. I rolled the system back twice, but it didn't really help.

I have added new hardware (2nd HD, DVD burner) but the system ran fine with these additions for at least a week (and numerous hard startups) without a problem.

I also noticed that, even though I run Windows Update every week, around the same time as the boot problem, all of a sudden I was showing needing 40+ critical updates, including SP1 and other stuff from 2002 that I absolutely know were installed before.

NAV isn't showing any problems either (updates every day).

Any suggestions?

Do you have SP1 installed? I installed it once on a system and it caused extreme slow down. Uninstalled it and everything was fine.

You might be having a problem with your network adapter looking for a DHCP address (for the slow booting problem) - if you don't have a static IP address assigned to your NIC, try assigning one to see if that resolves the slow boot problem.

The problem with the updates showing back up could be a problem when the computer has had a serious crash and it has been fixed with a restore - check your event logs to see if there are any suspicious logs.

I had SP1 before, but I haven't been able to get it installed successfully since it showed up as not being installed again.

I should have mentioned that I am connecting through a router that is just left on. Shouldn't that be taking care of the IP assignment, regardless of whether the computer's on or not?

I don't recall any serious crashes recently, but there have been a few oddities... for example, I had a screen pop up saying the administrator had locked the computer, except I don't have any users set up and it used to just log on as administrator...

Any errors showing up in the Event Viewer logs (Start > Run > Eventvwr)?

The only thing showing up is stuff related to starting in safe mode without networking.

I'm thinking it's time for a system rebuild. It's been awhile...
