Tweaking SBC DSL

I got around to tweaking my connection, and I'm at a loss.

I set the MTU to 1492, and ran a tweak test. With the default RWIN of 17186, the tweak test RTT avg was 92.8.

Using the RWIN calculator formula I calculated a setting of 26280 for the RWIN (based on 1500 kbps thru put).

After setting it to 26280, I rebooted and ran the tweak tester again. The RTT avg was approx. 121, which calculated to a RWIN of 35040.

I set the RWIN to 35040, and the next tweak test was:

»monitor.dslreports.com/tweak/blo···terpppoe
RTT avg = 149.6

Of course, when I raise the RWIN the RTT avg increases, and calls for a higher RWIN. When does it stop, what am I missing?

Thanks.

I get it...

I'll stick with 26280.

set MTU at 1492 and RWIN 64000, if you are using DrTCP to make adjustments you might need to reboot. Your MTU is NOT 1492 according to that test.

Router

Not sure what the problem is. I see the 1362 in the tweak test. I have included screen shots of the MTU in the router & the NIC card.

are you testing via wireless card? or wired ethernet?
because your settings indicated your WiFi card.
for 1500 your RWIN should be between 32000 and 64000 (I would recommend to try 64000 and work your way down)
MTU discovery - YES
Window Scaling - YES
Time Stamping - NO
Selective Acks - YES
Black Hole Detection - NO
Max Duplicate ACKs -4
TTL - 128
and in the Adapter settings, make sure you have correct adaptor, there is a down arrow to select your adaper...

Edit: I got pointed here from the Tweaks forum.

Are you running a router? If so, make and model?

The MTU reported in the tweak test is not necessarily accurate. When I was behind a Dlink gateway, I think it always reported 1412, and currently for Linux pppoe it reports 1480, even though in both cases I could prove it was 1492 by testing with ping data size (max ping data + 28 = MTU) and do not fragment switch. Ping data size 1464 was successful, but size 1472 gave me an error that mtu=1492.

I seem to remember that MMS is 40 bytes less than MTU and perhaps tweak test does not send us totally filled packets:

MMS Requested: 1452 (+ 40 = 1492 actual MTU)

From extended info:
max segm size 1440 (+ 40 = 1480 reported MTU)
min segm size 20
ave segm size 875

I am running a Netgear WGR614 (1st version). I just bought it, and am working with Netgear to get a V2 or V3 (they claim that V4 is going to be released in December). I'd like to have the WPA support. I suppose I should talk to the folks in the Netgear forum to confirm their experiences regarding version numbers & the differences.

Anyway, it is a Netgear WGR614 (I think the above router screen shot may show the model number in it).

I agree with efflandt. I just ran the "what size is my MTU" using the ping method and got 1472 as the value. However, the Tweak test shows 1362. My router claims 1492 as the negotiated MTU.

I came over from the tweaks forum as well. Just a couple of points to consider:
1. Optimal RWIN should be an even multiple of the MSS.
2. BBR tweak test CAN misread the MTU, usually due to the type of routers in between. (Mine shows 1466 even though I actually have 1492)
3. Base your tweaks on your known actual MTU/MSS if tweak test shows something different.

With all that considered, if you have done the pinging and know your MTU is 1492, tweak accordingly. I would recommend the following:

-Set the TCP Receive Window to 31944. (assumes line quality is good)
-Set everything with a pull down option/menu to Default.
-Blank/Clear all other fields.
-Save.
-Reboot.
-Post an up-to-date tweak test.
-Post a line quality test.
-Post the results of the speed test nearest you.

What should my Rwin be im on the 1.5/384 plan but its really around 1.2/320

Thanks

I set my MTU in my FR114P to 1492 and I got

Download = 1.288 Mbps
Upload = 324.07 kbps

which is better then the 1.2/319-320 i was getting.

Will changeing the Rwin on and MTU with DrTCP change anything. ?

try it, make sure to reboot as RWIN is a registry entry and will not update (even in XP) until you reboot. try 64000 out of curiosity

Looks like a lower RWIN is better for you. Try 26440.
