Web Browser Security Intros

Hi All:

Still more material that I use with some of my Business & Technical Writing classes and that I thought folks here might be interested in seeing.

My "regular" B&TW students (not the ones writing the user guide that you can read about here: »www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/intro.htm) do a short technical instructions assignment on web browser privacy and security. That assignment requires them to write a set of step-by-step instructions that explains how to do the following in one of the major web browsers:

* clear the browser cache and URL history
* turn off or selectively delete cookies
* turn off Java, scripting, and ActiveX

As so many of my students come to this assignment without the faintest clue about these issues (though they all have formidable mp3 collections!), I've put together two web pages to help them get started. Each page is a "guided tour" of sorts through the privacy and security settings of one of the major web browsers: Netscape Communicator and Internet Explorer. You can can view those web pages here:

Internet Explorer
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/i···opts.htm

Netscape Communicator
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/n···opts.htm

Fair warning: both documents make extensive use of screenshots. The IE page, in particular, is a large one, and may load slowly if you're on a dialup connection.

Keep in mind that these are not comprehensive guides to every aspect of configuring these browsers securely, but they do cover quite a bit of ground. The section on Internet Explorer 6.0's Privacy options is a bit involved, though still not complete.

As was the case with the previous set of class documents that I posted a week or so ago, these two web pages do not appear on my main web site (»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/). And in case you missed that earlier set of documents, here they are again:

Malware Control
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/b···tro1.htm

Email Privacy & Security
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/b···tro2.htm

WWW Privacy & Security
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/b···tro3.htm

Networking Privacy & Security
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/b···tro4.htm

Desktop Privacy & Security
»www.staff.uiuc.edu/~ehowes/btw/b···tro5.htm

As I said previously, these are merely "introductory" pages designed to help my students get started researching their topics.

Finally, the "PGP Versions, Sources, and Alternatives" page on the web site has undergone extensive updating and revision over the past two months. If you have an interest in things crypto or PGP, you can check the page out here:

In any case, I hope you find something of interest or use on these pages.

Best,

Eric L. Howes

As always Eric, thanks for sharing with us your well laid out subject matter. Your students, as well as those of us here in the Security Forum are very fortunate to have someone of your caliber share with us the work you put into these matters.

Not only is it all in my Favorites, I have a special file for all this great info. What a wonderful resource for both me and anyone else that needs to know, or see, how something needs to be done. Thanks, again, Eric. The screenshots are a wonderful addition. There are many people out there that work better with seeing something than being told, visual learners such as myself. This makes it really easy to work with.
