OK, someone mentioned Hairpins, so I'm off into "reminiscing mode" here a little, so bear with me... 
I first posted a version of this back in March of 2001, in response to some concerns that those of us with just one or two machines felt a little inferior to those "powerhouse" folks with 20-30+ machines Folding for the Cause, and what good did it to do keep on spending the time and effort to continue.
I went back and found my old post, copied/pasted it here, edited in the new numbers, and am quite amazed at the fact that what I posted then, still holds true today!
Some interesting number-crunching here;
Everyone gets excited about the big-crunchers, with the multiple-computer setups cranking out the units like mad. You know, the "TOP-10" of the crowd and such. OK fine, I get excited by those too!!
However, consider this tidbit;
On Team Helix, the Top-10 producers are responsible for about 28% of our total production at this point. With about 513,804 units to our Team's credit, that translates to around 143,257 units. Pretty neat, right?? But, where would we be without the other 72% of our producers, who are responsible for 370,547 units???!!!!
THAT is why everyone on this team is so vital, for without each of us, we wouldn't be working near as well toward the cause and yes, the stats as we are today! Let no one tell you that your production does not count!!!

| Very good point. I've completed... gosh... maybe 35000 points between the old FAH, GAH, and the current FAH, under a couple of different names. All that with two computers, the majority with one v e r y... s l o w... computer. 
The whole point of distributed computing is that the little folks can all get together to do something BIG! And that's what we're doing here!

Who knows who might fold a wu that leads to an important discovery. I know for sure that if I ain't folding, it won't be me. Whether you fold and just make the deadline or send in many wus per day, you are participating in something that has the potential to save lives in the future. Like the lottery man says "You gotta be in it to win it".

Matt, thanks. That really is so important...I personally would love to set up and maintain a powerful "folding-farm", but with my lack of space to "play" in...ain't gonna happen! Sometimes, particularly when I get some irritating "glitch", I wonder if my one (or two) machine is worth it...but, I know that it is, as is each and every single contributer out there!
If you just consider how relatively easy this is to do....yet how relatively few make the effort. To all my TH "teamies"....whether you have a fleet of mighty boxen...or a single "Mr Sluggy" , older P III, my hat is off to all of 'ya!!! (of course, "fleet of mighty boxen", is waaay welcome!)

One guy, Alexander Fleming, discovered penicillin in 1920 and changed the future for the sick and wounded.
One guy, Linus Pauling, first realized in 1950 that genes were made of protein, and published a number of papers in 1951 that first defined the the Alpha Helix model.
Two guys, James Watson and Francis Crick, cracked the DNA code. In April 1953, they published their paper "A Structure for Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid", in "Nature" magazine.
Two guys, Robert C. Gallo, M.D., and Luc Montagnier, M.D., announced in June of 1984, that they had found the cause of HIV/AIDS, finally allowing research to be directed at a particular retrovirus, and giving hope to many who had none.
All of these guys, and countless others, had thousands of other folks who contributed along the way whose names nobody knows... goes to show you that great things happen when everybody gives what they have; doesn't seem to be about "good, better, best"... seems to me it's all good! |

As a sufferer of stomach ulcers for over 15 years and having literally consumed hundreds of dollars worth of Tums and even more on the prescription drugs Tagamut and Pepcid
I was in seventh Heaven when I saw a story on TV where some Doctor had received the Nobel price for discovering that stomach ulcers were not caused by stress nor by excessive worrying but rather by a bacteria by the name of "Helicobacter pylori" A bacteria which is able to live and thrive in the acid environment of the stomach. And also that a cure was available for this malady which plagues so many people.
The very next day I presented the new facts to my Doctor, a man in his early sixties, who promptly laughed me out of his office, with the words, "That will be the day, don't believe everything you hear on TV"
Undaunted I went looking for a younger, perhaps more up to date on the facts physician.
After finding one, he assured me: "yes there was indeed a cure for stomach ulcers, but for some reason very few Doctors knew about it, or were unwilling to prescribe the cure. (Go figure)
He informed me that there were about six or seven different combinations of anti bacterial products available that would do the job. Ranging in total price from about $ 60.00 for the entire treatment to one well over $ 500.00
Each with different rates of success. By coincidence the highest priced one had the lowest rate of success.
I choose what he called the Bismut cure.
It consisted of taking three different anti bacterial pills and 4000 Mg Bismut (Pepto bismal in pill form) every four hours.
for a period of two weeks.
He also stated that I would have to get up every four hours and take the pills or the treatment would not work. That was some regimen every four hours for two weeks.
Well, it has been four years. My ulcers are still gone, I can eat anything I like. And am saving a lot of money not having to buy Tagamut or Pepcid and Tums.
Moral of this story, if you have ulcers go see your doctor and let him read this testimony.
And yes, after reading the first post of this tread, all of a sudden I feel important again. Even though I only have 2.2 Gb of folding power.

Please remember that 50% of all physicians graduated in the bottom half of their class.
Show this to your doctor. If he gets pissed off,  mad, you know where he is at.
I always say this to new doctors I visit, First one mentioned got mad, Second one literally was ROFLHAO

Thanks, liked the post and link-this one with one computer and I DO feel I'm contributing a lot and very happy to be on the team. But I'm also grateful for those (and you know who you are:) )multiple computer people who are willing and able to make our numbers look GREAT. Who knows, seems like a lot of us wind up crunching the same thing-it might be our whole team that finds a big cure!!! |
