[TiVo] Stupid Question about connecting Quad and Preview

If I connect my Preview to my Quad with just the ethernet cable (no coax), I am assuming that it will be only good for watching youtube and pandora and other applications. I am assuming that I won't be able to watch the recorded shows on the TIVO QUAD. Am I mistaken?

[Connectivity] [Chicago] Internet got slower with new modem and

After being really rather disappointed with speeds of approximately 12-15 Mbps bursting and settling down to about 7-10 with my 25Mbps plan, I decided to upgrade to 50 down and bought a new docsis3.0 modem (Motorola SB6141) to run it.

Well...now I get 7Mpbs down. Very strange to me exact same setup with a newer modem and faster plan gets me slower speeds. Please help.

Recommended RCN Internet service to a friend

I know many of us come here to vent and complain. And I'm one of them. But I also will give credit where it's do. I can honestly say I don't always like or agree with RCN on pricing. But I can't complain about quality of service. Especially high speed internet. Two co-workers of mine have DSL. And they have been complaining that even though they pay for the 1+meg service, many times they drop much lower, even down the the 768k range. I told them about RCN. One does have access to RCN. He called and just purchased internet based on my recommendation. He's a very happy camper. I hope he has the same good luck that I've had.

[Speed] SB6141 + 50/6 = Slow Speeds in Elmhurst, NY ???

Here's my encoded mac: b606c586313cea8b3328ae44d55accdd7b1f2832
As I've posted before many times, my speed is currently down the tubes.

I'm subscribed to the 50/6 package (internet only). During the day my speeds are mostly near 20mbps. Modem signal specs are all good.

During peak time -- as in RIGHT NOW -- speeds are usually about 15-19 mbps, a far cry from the 50 mbps that I'm subscribed to.

When we had the 25/2 mbps package it was consistently spot on the speeds. Just about the past month and a half the speeds have been abysmal (ever since we got the 50/6 package).
On top of that, each time I try to call customer care, there is 20+ minutes wait (which is a bit too much if its happening EVERY TIME that I call them).

What gives? Is it my modem's provisioning? Is it the wiring/signals? Is it that the node is saturated?

Can someone take a look.

thanks,
cchhat01

[TiVo] TiVo Stream Launched, Soft and Easy launch..

Hi Everyone, I just wanted you to know that we have opened up the Stream Codes to allow customers to get a TiVo Stream added to their Quad.

RCN TiVo Streams can be added to your Q Whole Home Bundle or your Q Standalone.

RCN Streams cost 4.95 a month

RCN Streams will allow you to stream Live T.V. or Stored Content to 3 (I) devices in the home, IPAD , IPHONE , IPOD (Touch)

These are pretty much for self install only, as we get comfortable we are allowing customers to pick these up at Market Payment / Equipment windows or we can even ship you one as well. As with any launch we are working out the kinks in the system and learning to crawl before we walk. So if you have any problem getting a stream from a distribution window or from calling in and ordering one please let me know and I'll walk it thru.

Here's a good video about the stream :

Just remember the rules above, you must have a Q.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=90seBcVnwLo

I know this says 4, we are supporting three streams.. Based on bandwidth you could possibly get 4...

The device is truly awesome, it's great to fire the game up while on the deck, Grab some kids shows to put on the IPAD before a long drive.. etc..

Let me know if you have any questions...

Android support is coming , but not anytime soon.. :(

I'm hopeful a few of you will get one, and let me know your feedback... and again, if you have any issues obtaining one just ping me and I'll walk it thru the process..

[TiVo] HDCP key - Bethlehem, PA

I am getting the message “Viewing is not permitted using the TiVo Digital Media Recorder's HDMI output. Try another TV input." or a similar message.

I know that it means that the box is not receiving an HDCP key back from the television.

I am trying the suggestions on the website below
http://support.tivo.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/146

But they are not working.

RCN cut out the internet on our system in the Lehigh Valley, and I think that might be the problem. I've called tech support twice and they are at a loss and are sending a technician. If someone has some ideas on this forum, I would appreciate it.

[Connectivity] Kudos and Thanks to RCN!

A spectacular lightening strike at 10:00 pm last night resulted in an eight hour long power outage in Chevy Chase, lasting through early this morning. Power lines were down and on fire at East West Highway and Donnybrook.

Despite having no commercial power in our section of Rock Creek Forest, all RCN services (TV, Telephone and Internet) remained up and working during the entire outage.

Great job! Thanks to RCN line crews who make this possible. :) :)

[CATV] RCN to Encrypt Basic Cable, Boxes Needed on ALL TVs even

Last fall, the FCC gave cable companies an early Christmas present: when their systems become all digital, they can encrypt/scramble even basic or limited basic cable channels. This means that EVERY TV will need a box or DTA (digital transport adapter) even if you have an HDTV with a QAM tuner that currently is able to display local channels in HD.

Under FCC rules, if all you have is limited basic, RCN will give you two "boxes" for two years free. If you subscribe to a higher level of service now, you will get one "box" for one year.

Here's the problem: the boxes they plan to give you are NOT HD. So all those HDTVs (and computer cards) that you have that just have the cable going directly into the back will STOP FUNCTIONING soon.

See: http://www.rcn.com/boxes

(They hide the fact of what type of box you will get.)

Under FCC rules, you have to be given 30 days advance notice before the basic channels are scrambled... and my notice arrived today in Somerville, MA. As of April 10, 2013, my TV in the kitchen, office, guest room, and my computer will stop displaying ANY stations. Over my dead body am I going to pay $10 a month per box for HD boxes for each of these sets.

The FCC has screwed millions of customers who have HDTVs with no boxes (and not just RCN customers).

See: http://www.consumerworld.org/pages/fccscramble.htm

At a minimum, HDTV owners should be given HDTV boxes free for one or two years, not standard definition ones as they plan to do.

Who would think that in 2013, we have to go back to using rabbit ear antennae?

[CATV] RCN changing business model? Bethlehem, PA

RCN seems to be changing the business model of CATV. It is difficult to tell the details from their website, because they are not making a big deal about it. Conventional Cable was that you always had to buy the first tier (RCN's Signature channels) before you could purchase the higher level packages.

The way I read the website, if you are a new customer, and if you purchase internet + "limited basic" and agree to $8 increase in the 2nd and 3rd year (as opposed to $5 increase for internet only), you may now buy the second tier packages without purchasing the first tier. Second tier options include:
(A) Showtime & The Movie Channel
(B) Starz
(C) HBO and Cinemax
(D) Premiere Total Pack
(?) MLB Extra Innings® $199/season

You do not have the option of purchasing individual channels from the first tier (like Fox News or ESPN).

This option does not seem to apply to all cities.

Strangely it seems to be very subdued offering. There is no full color splashy ads to call your attention to this option.

If an RCN representative would like to comment, I am sure people would be interested. It would be nice to see some clarification of the rules (like is MLB an option). I am curious as to why it is so downplayed as it strikes me as big change.

Why are Phillies spring training games blacked out on MLB network if RCN doesn't provide The Comcast Network in it's lineup.
[Other] RCN rate increase with no notice - Chicago

I am a Chicago resident and receive "50 Mbps High-Speed Internet" from RCN. For more than a year I have been paying $64.99 per month. Yesterday (May 1st) I looked at my billing statement and noticed that the price jumped to $93.00 per month (a 30% increase).

I think it is important to mention that I was emailed my billing statement on April 10th which is listed as the "Statement Date" (I don't receive paper bills because RCN recommended that I go green to protect the environment). According to my billing statement the billing cycle started on April 6th and the payment is due May 4th.

I immediately called RCN and was told that the increase is real. According to the RCN representative, RCN is allowed to raise anybody's rate at any time even for a billing cycle that has already started.

I am set up for e-billing so I assume that on May 4th RCN will charge $93 to my credit card.

Has anybody else experienced a similar problem?

[Speed] Another Complaint re Internet Speed in Allentown

Why am I paying for 25/2 Mbps service, when the last few evenings I have been seeing average download speeds of 3 to 5 Mbps???

This pervasive horribly slow service seems to be the new standard for RCN internet service. It would seem that the least RCN could do is tell the customers what the issues are, what RCN plans to do to resolve the issues, and what is the schedule for restoring their advertised service.

If RCN is incapable of resolving the problems, then let us know, so that we can take appropriate steps to obtain alternate sources for internet service.

RCN, your customers deserve better! Getting 15% of the advertise "up to" speed is NOT acceptable!
