Very UNHappy w/ Bell Atlantic in DC

anon : I've had DSL since December 6. I live in downtown DC, in an old rowhouse with old phone wiring. Installation was a snap on my second line. I can't say that the speed of the connection has been spectacular, but download speeds and the ease of logging on made it worthwhile to keep IMHO...UNTIL the day it snowed on 1/24. I have not had DSL service since that day and have spent countless hours been transferred from anonymous customer service reps to customer service rep, all of which had to be told my story from the beginning. The entire line has gone out three times during this period of time, although it usually has allowed me to use my analog modem (which I'm using right now) and the voice line.

Well, FINALLY, after ranting and raving to them Tuesday, they said they would send someone out to check out the line at my house on Thursday. I waited all day Thursday, and when no one came, I called in to be told that my order was for Friday.

Friday, the doorbell rang at 9 am and the tech walked in, asked me what my problem was and told me he couldn't do anything about it, because he only serviced the voice line. He called in and asked for another tech to come and the tech, who was great,BTW, who installed the service came back out and tested everything he could in the house figured out what the problem was and ordered another tech to come today between 1 and 8 pm.. (because we were not going to be home before noon).... This had to be someone who could work on the outside line to the house and someone had to be home to give him access to the back of the house. Well, we got home at 12 noon as we expected and the tech had already been here and left a note that I had to call ON MONDAY to reschedule. We spent all afternoon tracking down someone to help on the phone...my husband and I were on both lines at the same time... I was put on hold for an hour on my first try and no one came back. I was subsequently put on hold for 20 minutes at a time and cut off. My husband's experience was similar. Finally, we were told that someone would be out before 6 pm tonight.
It's now 8 pm. No one has shown up. We've called and called and been put on hold... Told that no supervisor was available and basically been given the worst possible customer service ever received...

We finally got through to a supervisor who has promised that someone will be out in the morning.

If any other business gave the kind of customer service that Bell Atlantic provides, they would have been out of business years ago.

If you have not signed up for this service yet... DON'T! The minute cable comes into my neighborhood, I'm outta here and onto StarPower....

Whew! (It felt good to vent! )

Disgrunted in Mt. Pleasant

VDSL Available in Gilbert, AZ.

anon : My wife called US West about DSL service for the house for a new job she is starting soon. She was told our line did not qualify for DSL, BUT did for VDSL. They gave her this rundown of the service. Up to 4 computers, 1 Megabit speed (I assume up and down), up to 4 Televisions, Pay per view, caller ID on the TV, and a host of channels for TV. A rundown of basic costs were $50 each to hook up the 2 computers, no mention of any charges to hook up our 3 televisions, $8.95 per month for the chapest TV option (we have a dish), and about $69 a month for the service.

Hmmm, I said how can that be. After searching US West web site , I found a few documents (Sol's speeches about the digital living room), mentioned trials in a few areas north of Phoenix. The people at USW told my wife that Gilbert (east of PHX) is wired with fiber.

After looking into it more, there seems to be a number of factors that affect speed but VDSL can go as high as 56 Megabits and has no problems with video. A friend at Lucent told me several months ago that USW was waiting for the availability of their VDSL solutions before rolling DSL out in lots of areas. Seems they are going after the cable guys.

I have tons of questions for them but do not feel like being one of their guinea pigs. I think for now we will go with an alternative DSL supplier and wait til they get the bugs sorted out. Can you imagine me asking how wireless phone jacks, interfaces with the TVS, the need for available line for the Direct TV to dial out, etc. would affect the performance of the system?

Anyone out here (Arizona) have VDSL and can you comment on it?

anon : Regardless of where you are in the SWBell service area ADSL setup and monthly rates are the same. SWBell does not drop or adjust the equipment and installation charges and based on the competition in your area.

SWBell waives approx. $300 of setup and labor charges for anyone in their service area who agrees to a 1yr verbal contract. The $200 charge is for the DSL equipment (modem, nic, and splitter) that you are choosing to purchase through SWBell.

SWBell will provide you with ADSL service minus the $300 installation fee even if you select to provide your own equipment as long as you agree to a 1yr. contract. I do not believe that $200 is an outrageous price for this equipment. SWBell is offering you this equipment at a fair market price regardless of what they pay for it. In some cases, you may be able to obtain pieces of equipment through SWBell for less than what you would pay if you were to go directly through the manufacturer.

It stands to reason that SWBell is not selling the consumer the equipment for the price that they
obtain it for. However, that is just the way retail works. When you go into a store you never buy goods for the same price that the store paid the manufacturer. Otherwise, there would be no point in retail sales.

At this point you may be thinking, SWBell is not a retail outlet. SWBell is a utility. But before getting upset with SWBell for not selling you the equipment for what they pay for it, reconsider the fact that they are a utility. Being as they are a utility they are responsible to abide by tariff regulations. Because of this SWBell can not proceded to sell equipment far below market value, based on the fact that they obtain it for such.

The moral of the story is if you do not want to pay SWBell for installation or equipment. Obtain the equipment on your own and agree to a 1yr. verbal contract.

Signed,
Not attempting to rude, just trying to enlighten.

The New Math of IDSL vs ADSL!

anon : Help me out here, please.

I was reading your "12-steps to home DSL", Step 4 and found your statement "IDSL is priced slightly higher than DSL..." I don't understand the "slightly higher".

Let me see now: The general rule for Internet Access pricing seems to be that higher speed demands higher costs.

Now, if I lived across the street from my house, I would get a guaranteed 384Kbps connection from PacBell at about $40/month.

Unfortunately I don't, but I can still get IDSL from Flashpoint at 144Kbs for a mere $130/month and with no speed guarantees!

According to my estimates that translates to about 1/3 of the "standard" PacBell speed at 3 times the cost. That represents roughly ten times the cost as opposed to "slightly higher"! Something is seriously wrong and someone needs to really get on top of your reliability and performance issues. I've been dealing with these problems for day's now with no end in sight.
GTE morons

anon : Talk about frickin' idiots, I'll nominate GTE, hands down. I sign up for DSL with Earthlink, but GTE is the local telephone company, and they will be setting up the circuit and doing the work. It's November 13, 1999. About three weeks go by and GTE does a line test. Earthlink informs me that my line won't work (if I had known about DSLreports.com, I'd have known that I'm less than 5000 feet from the central office, easily within range). It's sometime in early December. A week later I get an e-mail saying the line test was performed incorrectly, and they would re-do it and get back to me. Nobody ever gets back to me, of course, so I have to call. And they say the line test is complete, but they are really backed up, someone will have to call me in about a week to set up an installation date, but it could be longer since it's now late December, with the holidays and all.

Sometime in January Earthlink calls and we set up an install date of February 4, a Friday. They can't give me a time, and can't even narrow it down to a reasonable window. I have to be home ALL DAMN DAY. GTE does the install and won't give them any other time. So I piss and moan, but realize I'm going to have to be home all day. In the week before the install, I find DSLreports.com and find that DSL installation horror stories are commonplace. To avoid becoming a statistic, I phone Earthlink, not once, but twice prior to the install date, and each time I ask if I need software. They say yes, and promise to overnight it to me. I never got it. Either time. So the night before the install, I download the software, no big deal, takes about 20 minutes.

The big day arrives. I wake up, clean up my office for the installer, and at 8:00 am I decide to call GTE, not Earthlink, just to be sure they know to send somebody out today. After 45 minutes on hold (no exaggeration!), I finally speak to someone who assures me they show an order for my installation today. Alright, I'll be speeding down the info superhighway any minute now. Well at 2:00 pm, nobody has showed. So I call Earthlink, and suffer through being on hold some more. Finally, I get: 'Yes, we show that you are scheduled for today, there are still three hours left in the day, just wait. I'm impatient, and a bit worried, but what can I do? At 4:00 I decide to call GTE again. Again I'm on hold forever, then I get some help, and she says she will transfer me to another department who runs the installers. Miraculously, I'm transferred to someone outside of GTE, who barely speaks English, and doesn't know why I'm calling him, because he doesn't work for GTE. He says it happens all the time.

OK, now I'm getting pissed. I call back again, and suffer through more waiting on hold while they get around to answering my call. When they answer, I explain what happened and they say they will keep me on the line, no transferring, but just hang on while they talk to someone. Mind you I'm at home, stuck on the phone, not at work with a speakerphone doing something productive. She comes back on the line and says they cancelled my order, but she needs to confirm what the computer is telling her. And then I get transferred unexpectedly. The guy wants to know how I got this number. Aaaack, not again!!! Fortunately, it was not my friend I spoke to during my last unexpected transfer, rather it was secondary support for the installation department, but he usually just talks to installers, not the customers, so he's not sure why I got tranferred to him. But he's a nice guy, and helps me out.

GTE builds circuits by assigning them a unique number, called a DLCI number, and by having the unique circuit, you get the dedicated circuit that allows DSL to work. Seems that GTE somehow assigned my DLCI number to another person, and we can't share this unique number, so my installation went into the 'reject pile until this gets resolved. This happened on JANUARY 25, but nobody told me about it UNTIL FEBRUARY 4. It's been nearly 3 goddam months I've been waiting for this thing, and these frickin idiots can't even let me, OR the GTE person I spoke with this morning, OR Earthlink know about a problem that was identified 10 DAYS AGO!!!!!!

I had called and called and called to avoid this, and I STILL GOT SCREWED!!!! So then I have to call Earthlink again and wait ON HOLD SOME MORE! After about 15 minutes, the nice woman says they were never told about this problem, January 19 was GTE's last notation in the database. But I'll transfer you to 'escalation, who handles difficult problems. They are very nice, and say 'WOW, this has been open since November??? I say yes, but more importantly, I've been home all goddam day for NOTHING!!!! Of course by now it's after 5:00, so we can't reach GTE. So all I have is a promise to get a call on Monday to set up yet another install date, but this time with a mere 4-hour window. I'm so fucking pissed I could kill those dumb assholes. If they didn't have a monopoly on the local service I swear they'd go out of business. I hate GTE, Pac Bell is a much better local Telco.

And again...and again...and again...and each rep. told me the same bogus story. Finally the last rep. informed me that someone will call me within 2 weeks and she even offered me an additional free month of DSL.
Re: I hate to rub it in but cable modems rock

I agree that cable modems when installed correctly and working right are great. Be thankful you aren't in my situation.

I have been trying to get good service out of comcast@home for over a month. I was scheduled to have cable service installed before christmas 1999, I took a day off from work because they said my appointment would be between 8am and 8 pm. I waited all day only to receive a phone call at 5pm telling me that they wanted to reschedule my appointment. They said that their was a problem with my how my account was setup. After much complaining I finally got them to come out and at least install the modem knowing that the service would not work. I then proceeded to attempt to get my account/service fixed for 2 weeks before I fianally got access If you can in fact call it that. They had to send out another tech to do my network settings, they would not tell me over the phone. After arriving 6 hours late and messing with my settings for an hour he finally figured out that the first guy never turned on my service from the utility box outside my building. Ok I thought I finally have access, little did I know that my nightmare was just begining.

During use I had noticed from day one transfer rates that we're no where near what they siad I should be getting. I was told I shoulbe be getting nothing less than 160k/sec, I have never seen more than 15k/sec. I have called and spoke with every tier of support. They even sent out another tech who completely detached my system from the cable modem and ran his laptop through my modem and got the same problem. He tested my lines, and verified that nothing was wrong with the coax. He than refered me to support again.

Now after being promissed 3 times that I would be getting a call back from the lame excuse for tier 3 support that comcast has, I finally got a call last night. Now they are saying that the cause of my poor spped is because I have 2 network cards, some purported NT 4.0 genius at comcast insists that it's the 2 NIC's. So tongiht I will be disconnecting my NT Firewall(2 nic machine) and attaching the modem directly to my w98 machine to prove to these idiots that 2 network cards has nothing to do with the speed issue.

I am a network and firewall administrator for a Bank, and I know that a firewall box with 2 nics will jnot drop a 160k connection to 15k. And any network engineer should know that.

Be thankful that your cable install went so well.

Jamy

anon : Okay, I'm going to admit it. I'm a BA Tech.. A+ Cert.. Network+ Cert..and MCP. Im not a mac guru. I do have a bit of mac knowledge. I'll try to exhaust it here. #1..as mac users know, there are definate issues with the version of winPOET that is currently shipped and MAC OS over 8.6. If nobody checked that, it may be your problem. #2 there could be some small possibility that your tcp/ip stack is corrupt. If nobody has had you delete the file MACPTCPdnr please do..reboot and then enter your configurations again from the control panel. #3, I assume that this is a mac, not a clone and has onboard ethernet. If is it possibly a clone.. check your adapter properties, see if the settings are full duplex and 10mbps. #3 if they had you dl any version of Netscape over 4.5 you may want to revert to 4.5. It is the most current version that has been suitably tested. Will 4.7 work? Probably, I'm just saying that you may want to consider the possibility. #4, and I have seen alot of this recently. Are you bridged or ppoe? If you have a static ip make positively sure that your gateway is whatever number your ip is.. say 151.200.40.123..with only a 1 in the last octet. Dunno what some techs are thinking but, this has happened alot in similar situations to the one you are describing. #5, if you can connect run some tracerts. Are they going off without a hitch? If so, you could possibly be experiencing a problem with your card at the co. Or you could be bound incorrectly. You can go to www.tracert.com to run tracerts or to ping if you dont have any applicable utilities. Also, try pinging your gateway. If that is in the hundreds then there is your culprit and you need to get them to run some tests on your local loop.

My only other tip is this and I know you may grown but, check your connection, check your cable, if you have an extra one lying around, try changing it. I have stood around with System Admins before after trying everything we could think of to resolve intermitten connection problems before we replaced a cat 5 and presto! Issue solved. I have no knowledge of your specific problems and what has and hasnt been done but maybe, just maybe someone missed one of the basics.. Good luck.

brian4173 : Sorry I took sooooo long to respond. For some reason I wasn't notified of a new message up in here. :) I have a 384/128 connection. My CO is located in Rockville (as the wire goes it's 10,343 feet due east). Haven't really done alot of speed testing, but the ones I did when I first got the line are well in line for a 384/128 connection. I am very very happy with the service. (With the exception of a few growing pains on Covad's part).

brian4173 : Well, Speakeasy has been having their own problems. I was down (well, not completely but dialup was faster) from yesterday afternoon to this morning. Supposedly it was an AT&T router problem. Nevertheless, I am *very* happy with the service and my connection is excellent. One word of caution for Marylanders: Speakeasy is located in Seattle so latency for gaming is a bit lacking. They *are* putting in a POP in NY so that should be corrected rather quickly. I'm not a gamer so I'm not bothered at all by it.

MANY of my peers have certs ranging from MCSE to Network+. Rumors of a firing were heard today. It must have been you.
