i think portland public schools gives each school like 2mbit/2mbit or something - maybe even just a T1
heres noon on a monday -
2003-12-11 14:51:31 EST: 1276 / 177 Your download speed : 1276332 bps, or 1276 kbps. A 155.8 KB/sec transfer rate. Your upload speed : 177147 bps, or 177 kbps. Seems like broadband .. above the 1mbit barrier!
it gets worse |

 | reply to bizk1t4u What do you think its on? A T3? |

A T3 is 45MBPS. It's probably a fiber line coming into the school with 5MBPS with a burstable rate. |

|
 | My highschool had 128kbps isdn Shared with 400 students. Average speed test was about 5kbps down, and 30 kbps up (yes, that is correct what I typed)
Then, they fired the network lady (who sat on her @$$ and surfed ebay all day)(I cracked her password from my Principals office, and showed him what she did all day, thats why she got fired)
Then, school hired me, bla bla bla, then, i ditched the isdn, went next door to the internet cafe, made deal for $50/month to leech some of Thier bandwidth, buried my 300 ft ethernet cable, and now my old HD has nice 2 megabit service -- Chris Allessi ExaltedHosting.com Host of AlbinoBlackSheep KazaaLite Mirror at 2 terrabytes/month |

 | 2 Meg service? lol at home I get 3megs.
I asked the network admin and he said we got 2 T3 lines bundled together.
43x2=86
86 megs coming into my school. I know we were also testing a VDSL line but I dont know what happened to that. Also I heard that we might be putting an OC-3 line some time next year. |
|
 | my home connection is faster than that 7498/7580 7983/6622 but my old HS has a nice 1mbps service + mac just imagine how fast the websites were loading now at least my collage has a nice OC-192 shared with campus, |
|
 | reply to bizk1t4u Yes, that is nice, but cant beat 2 megabits, off someones t3 for 50/month. Cost that, and about $30 for the ethernet.
Oh well, that was few years ago. -- Chris Allessi ExaltedHosting.com Host of AlbinoBlackSheep KazaaLite Mirror at 2 terrabytes/month |
|
 | my hs connection is horrible we have about 800 computers in the school. All on one t1 line you can imagine how slow literally takes me 2 mins just to open a start page. |
|
 | reply to bizk1t4u My school got 1200/1200 just after noon. It's got decent loading times. Probably about 200-250 computers networked in total. IBM came in and did a real nice job setting it up. |
|
1 edit | reply to bizk1t4u Last year I could get pretty nice speeds at my school (I think around 1500/2000) but I haven't checked this year with the entire new network infrastructure, but its probably slower because the network is all wireless, although they did double the bandwidth this year. |
|
 | reply to bizk1t4u Whoa a higschool with a good connection that is strange. My hoghschool gets about 15 k down and 5 up. This is not an exageration. There is one t-1 line coming into a school with about 400 computers. |
|
 | hmmm, my high school got better all the sudden!

It actually works much better than you would think. All the computer labs have 2 APs each which are 802.11G/A. Then they use BlueSockets to authenticate the users on the domain and any laptops that students and teachers bring in. Throughout the school, we have the Orinoco APs in the hallways (there are a LOT of them). I know that one time I brought my laptop in and ran netstumbler, I could access like 10 APs just from one location.
There's more info about the technology at my school at »www.stjohnsprep.org/about/tech.asp |
