The one I've had problems with is the scheduled jobs that are created by MSBackup. It configures the jobs and everything runs great for a week, multiple weeks and then for some as-yet-undetermined reason backups will just stop being done. Looking at the log or running the task manually from the task scheduler does nothing to help. Deleting the job, and going back into MSBackup to reschedule the job gets it running for another little while...but alas it breaks again. After the third time I dropped it, and have also gone with a 3rd party program.

For some reason, the scheduled tasks started working again. I was using E-Scheduler for the past couple weeks, but decided to do some system maintenance over this holiday by deleting un-used or un-necessary programs.

So, I tried setting up some scheduled tasks again, and they worked! :)

I think that the possible factors prohibiting my from running the tasks in the past were:

1) I had a time clock skin installed (ATClock) and while it was a neat little program, I realized it was a bit bloated.

2) I think the syntax I was using in the "Run:" blank was incorrect for some of the scheduled tasks. I was not using double quotes for all scheduled tasks, seem to work okay, not reliably, but worked for those tasks with switches.

So, I changed the syntax of the Run statement to include double quotes, like the following:

Run: "C:\Documents and Settings\User\My Documents\ComputerInfo\Tasks\runsomefunctions.bat"

So, I am pleased that the scheduled tasks now work, so I don't have to rely on a third party software. ;)

Hope this helps others who come across the same problems I did.

To get around this, use the AT scheduler (which will submit the correct request in the Task Scheduler).

for more options, try "at /?" to get a list of switches.

The only thing that seems out of the ordinary, and you have already alluded to this, is that the McAfee updater "last time run" says never and from what I understand that task does run correctly.

NOTE: The st_alltasks.jpg file has the user blackened for privacy reasons, and you should see that the task can be manually run, which I did run each of the tasks manually.

I did try stopping and restarting the Task Scheduler service (looking in the events log before I did that and there was nothing out of the ordinary), the only two events recorded in my system event log were:

Q. What is the secret to getting tasks to run when no one is logged on when using Windows XP?

-schedule service is running, set to automatic, log on as 'local system'
-task is scheduled to run under an user account which is an administrator
-task is scheduled to run under an user account with a password
-task itself is legit as it will run when executed directly
-task schedule setup is valid as it will run IF I remain logged on
-Event log shows nothing
-task log shows no attempt to run the task
-task status is 0x0, but that is irrelevant since 'time last run' reveals it was not run at all

Since schedule runs as a service with startup set to automatic and logon set to 'local system', one would
assume that schedule service begins running when the computer is started, regardless of whether or not anyone
logs on. Since the task is set up to run with an administrator logon complete with password, one would assume that since the schedule service is running, at the scheduled time it would logon as the designated user and run the task.

A. You need to replace the Task Scheduler Log File which can be accomplished quite easily. If you follow these
exact instructions, the schedlog.txt (shedlgu.txt) file will be replaced with a brand new one without any information other than
system start-up information upon the first boot.

Click Start, Run and type in: msconfig. Then click Selective Startup and uncheck the Load System Services check box. Click OK and wait for the hour glass to stop. Restart the computer, click OK to the first Window that indicates that you have selected "Selective Startup".

When the System Configuration Utility reappears, Check the Normal Startup Box. Click Start> Click Search> Click All Files and Folders Category and type schedlog.txt (schedlgu.txt) and Enter. Windows will search and locate the schedlgu.txt file. Press Stop as soon as the file is located. Right click on the file schedlog.txt (schedlgu.txt) and delete and send to the recycle bin. Now restart the computer again by selecting Start>Turn Off Computer and Select Restart.

You will now have a new Task Scheduler Log File. You may check the new Log File and the one start up entry that I described by selecting Run and typing the file name schedlog.txt (schedlgu.txt) and click OK. Appearing will be your new Task Scheduler Log.

I have a perplexing problem with getting my Scheduled Task to automatically run at their scheduled intervals. Each task is set up properly (0x0) and I am able to manually run all of them. I've read the following thread:

And I also thoroughly went through the M$ documentation on the issue and double checked my system configurations:

1) Task Scheduler is started and set to AUTOMATIC. It's also set to System login and Interact with my Desktop. RPC as its dependent service is also set to AUTOMATIC and started. It's set to login by Profile1, not the system and does not interact with my desktop.

2) Each scheduled task was created with a future date and time. Also, the user login is me and the password is correct, only one (McAfee Update) has a duplicate login as System. This task, McAfee Update, is the only one that is consistently running automatically, although the LAST RUN DATE always shows NEVER, and shows NEVER for all the other scheduled tasks.

Is there something that I am missing?

I am more than willing to provide screenshots of configurations if that will help.
