Re: [General] Problem sending email to Yahoo! accounts

MHOyet2B : Here's an interesting twist.

My account is SBC-Yahoo, migrated (not merged) from pacbell.net and I use OE. OE is configured to send mail to smtp.pacbell.yahoo.com. I haven't touched any settings for a long time, including user name and password.

Trying to send mail, both the other night and just now, I've gotten an error (didn't write it down, sorry, but I could reproduce it easily enough).

The thing is that I also have my firewall setup to only connect to mail servers at specific IP addresses, notably those associated with smtp.pacbell.yahoo.net, and my attempts to send mail were being blocked because the IP address that the email client was trying connect to was being blocked.

Currently my attempts to send mail are being directed to 217.12.12.194, which translates to smtp1.bt.mail.vip.ukl.yahoo.com !!
I thought that was very strange indeed - so I decided to check here.

In any event, after I allowed 217.12.12.194 through the firewall, my email did get through, and I've just confirmed by sending an email to another address of mine that the email was delivered.
The other night, I tried to send email that was directed to a different IP, 217.12.11.66, and I had to adjust the firewall settings in that case too!

I don't know if this is exactly related to other people's problems, unless they have firewalls that are also interfering with their email clients. (I'm using Kerio, btw.)

Actually, on my machine, it's really NAV that handles emails, but that doesn't make much difference. I had to allow NAV to connect to those respective IP addresses (and the correct ports which were already configured anyway), and once I did that, it solved my problem.

The address from the other night, 217.12.11.66 works out to smtp1.mail.vip.ukl.yahoo.com !!

I hope this doesn't confuse the issue - I only really know a few things about the way networks work, but what I experienced seems to be soomehow related to what others are experiencing here.
I kind of wonder if people set up their email client to contact either of the servers in the UK, if their email would go through, but I'm not suggesting necessarily that they try. It's not what I had to do.

I'm just relieved to see that something hadn't crept into my machine that was hijacking my email, and I thought I'd offer the info I have.

Good luck!
[text was edited by author 2003-10-09 22:16:55]
