 | If you are behind a router with firewall and the MSN DSL 1000 with a firewall, you are SOL. |
|
 | If you're saying the router is behind the modem then yes you can do that. Of course, you need 1st have to flash the 1000 flashed the SMC firmware. Give the router a local ip on the same subnet as modem, and configure the modem to DMZ the routers ip. Finally, open the ports you need and forward them to the client pc thats hosting. Now you're there. |

Of course, you 1st have to flash the 1000 to the SMC firmware. |

 | I never got that to work. I spent literally dozens of hours messing with it. Finally, I gave up on it. Actually, that's why I ended up going with cable and dropping the DSL service. I could open ports with the modem only, but could never get ports to open when the router was in between the modem and PC. I don't have problems with the cable modem and router, since the cable modem has no NAT/firewall. All in all, a better way to go for me anyway.
I moved in June/July, so MSN decided to make me a "new" customer again. I got the 1st month free and a free XBox Live v2 kit. I canceled service less than 60 days later, and only ended up paying $17ish TOTAL for service from early July to late August. $9.95 of that is for a return shipping package (to ship modem back to them) which I have not yet received. Not too shabby for 2 months of DSL and free XBox Live.
I bought my own cable modem, the LinkSys, which has a $10 MIR, making it $60. I am getting $15 OFF each of the 1st 3 months, making the modem only $15 (resale value on eBay is about $50). Now I am getting 1.5 Mbps down for the same $50/mo. |

 | server behind modem I have opened a port on my dsl 1000 modem, and an online port scanner says 8080 is opened and a server is running behind it, but I can't get a page to come up. I am running Apache server listening on port 8080. Just wondering what I should try. |

| Let me edit my post. tsm26 has a server behind modem, but cannot access his web server. Tsm26, you should try to access your server using a proxy server, any one will do. The one I have bookmarked and often use is on guardster.com. In the middle of the page they have a FREE anonymous surfing box, just type in the address you want to surf to and go. No need to sign up or login. If anyone has any other handy proxy sites we can use I will be happy to recommend them in the future.

can't configure dsl 800 I have a DSL 800, but I can't get the .net config app or the vb6 config app to connect to the modem, or the netdsl manager to find the modem (on the first screen, it says detecting, but can't find anything). I'm using the ethernet port. My ip is 192.168.1.2 and the modem's 192.168.1.1. DHCP is enabled. I installed upnp from optional networking components and started the upnp service, which didn't help anything. I also tried setting my ip manually to 192.168.1.2 with subnet 255.255.255.0 (instead of 255.255.255.252) as per the troubleshooting methods in the netdsl 800 manager help file, but that didn't help anything.
I portscanned my modem 1-65535 with nmap and the only open ports are 20, 53, 80, and the filtered ports 27xxx and 17xxx (can't remember the xxx's). The point being that port 5000 and 23 (for using the telnet config method) are not open. Telnetting to ports 20 and 53 doesn't give any sort of welcome banner back, and commands don't seem to do anything.
I tried upgrading the firmware through signin.msn.com, but after logging in, it just said "finished". So I reset my modem to factory defaults by going to 192.168.1.1/reset.html, and after that, the firmware upgrade completed, but the firmware revision is the same. Version 5.5.12, IIRC, the same version posted by someone earlier who had a success story.
I called msn tech support, but of course they're clueless, basically telling me "you can't configure it."
What's the deal here? Is my modem unconfigurable because it doesn't support upnp for some reason? This is on a fresh install of xp pro, asus a7n8x using the onboard nic. |

MSN isn't clueless, at least not because they said it can't be configured. They're right. It can't be configured.
If you had read just a few posts before starting your own thread, you would have most likely found 6,000,000 posts talking about the NetDSL 800, and how it isn't configurable. MSN also sends another non-configurable modem out, the DSL 1000 (which is basically an SMC 7401BRA). A forum member posted that it could be flashed back to its original firmware the company intended it to have, and it will work great. But, if you have an Arescom NetDSL 800, you are OUT OF LUCK. Sorry. Many that must have the ports opened have either been buying different modems (which has increased prices on eBay) or changing service.
Take a few moments and read the threads (or at least the titles) before posting. You'd find that your Q has already been answered --- 6,000,000 times. |

 | hatethismodem I tried that. It sounds good but the program it is all based off of won't recognize the modem. So it is pretty pointless. I think they're right the netdsl 800 is unconfigurable I suggest dropping the Microsft shitty network and moving on. |
|
 | When I tried that with my NetDSL 800, it "fried" it when I told the manager to reset the modem. After it reset, I could not get it to do anything at all and without any type of configuration utility, I didn't know how I'd be getting it to work at all. Fortunately, I plugged it in weeks later to see if I could make the modem a backup (in case the SMC flash for the 1000 didn't work) and it worked just fine.
But as jenkel16 mentioned, that webpage is bogus. It hasn't been updated for 20+ months. MSN may have removed the configurability with a firmware version. |
