anon : I just got the e-mail yesterday, but mine says $399 - $100 for return of 4000 equip - $100 for 15 month agreement + $25 shipping and handling. $225 just to upgrade, no. The really sucky thing is though right now with the 4000 on the USB on a Gateway PII 300 and then out to wireless, the speed sucks for anything outside of that main Gateway. I want the damn ethernet interface to bypass that computer!! Oh well, I guess I'll just have to wait for the price to go down or find one for sale somewhere. GGRRRRR!!!

The information on the DW site indicates a hub or switch, and even says that a firewall must be used on every pc connected on the local LAN. No mention of a router/firewall..
anon : On 9/17/03, I had DirecWay installed. I was ignorant of the fact that it required a PC to be directly connected to the modem (my fault), which would require me to purchase a whole new computer just for that purpose, which I have not yet done, just on principle.

The DW6000 will of course eliminate that problem, and is now available. (I sure wish DirecWay or my installer had mentioned that to me 2 weeks ago!) My options are to:

1) exercise my 30 day service cancellation option, which would cost around $200 (the price of installation), or
2) wait for the modem upgrade offer, or
3) purchase a computer and live out my 1 year DW4000 contract.

Does anyone have a sense for the upgrade cost? If it's going to be more than $200, then I should cancel and get the whole new service (which seems crazy). But if it's less, then I will wait for the upgrade and swap out the modem. Really don't want to buy that PC.

PetDude : Spinnaker, yes it has DHCP and NAT capabilities. There is a "Pro" version for those with a need for a static IP. In that case the DHCP will only hand out one address, the static one, just like a cable modem. You would attach the unit to your computer if you only have one, or to a router if you want to share that IP.

For the average consumer who doesn't require a static IP, the unit can be attached directly to a computer, if there is only one, or to a hub or switch for a LAN. There is really no need for a router in this case as the DW6000 will hand out LAN IP's and handle the sharing itself.

By the way, the Mydirecway music will work on the client computers if attached through a switch or hub (so I hear), but not through a router. I haven't tested this as I must use a router in my applications, but I did test it for a short time directly connected to a computer and the music was there.
PetDude : Upload speeds. Yeah that. OK, here is the deal as best as I can describe it to you without getting myself in a heap of trouble. If you get a DW6000 that alone will not help your upload speed. You are still limited by the same in-route hardware at the NOC and the same methods of handling traffic. Expect the same upload speed, a new modem can't solve that by itself.

It has already been posted here that the DW6000 is supported on new in-routes that will allow for higher upload speed. But more specifically the new in-routes provide more upstream bandwidth per in-route which could mean more upload speed per customer or could mean more customers per in-route.

It doesn't mean those new in-routes would be available for free, or that they would be available in a consumer version, and I would complete discount any information from anyone who states they know one way or the other. I don't think anyone knows for sure. I'm guessing we will know before year end.

But in any event, the DW6000 won't be the only piece of new equipment you would need for the new in-route and you might not need the DW6000 depending on how old and what type of equipment you already have. You will need new stuff outside, for sure.

Bottom line is if the only reason you are considering upgrading is to get better upload speeds, save your money and wait a couple months to see what develops.
--
Why must I feel like that?
Re: [SRS] When will DW6000 be made public/upgrade

PetDude : Sorry for being late to the party. Comcast is out at work, and has been all day so I've been off line. Had to get home to the satellite before I could get on-line. Go figure.

I'll answer as many questions as I can.

The DW6000 is available immediately for new installs on GC3 and Satmex5. It will be available for upgrades for anyone with a DW4000 by mid October. I don't have any cost information, and honestly I don't think it has been determined yet.

Unlike the DW4020, the 6000 runs the HPEP proxy client software on board. This means that you point your browser to use the proxy at the LAN address of the 6000 on port 87. The result is like a DW4020 on steroids when it comes to browsing. The knock on the 4020 has always been that due to the lack of the proxy, it does not browse nearly as fast as the DW4000. The 6000 is easily as fast, if not faster at browsing than a 4000. As a side note, for DW4020 owners, there is a plan to incorporate the HPEP client software on the 4020 as well in the future to solve that issue. I don't know when.

Like the 4020, there really are no tweaks on your computer to use the DW6000. Now I want to make sure the message gets out correctly, because I read too often things like "they took tweaking away with this", like it is some sort of conspiracy. That is complete nonsense. Both the 4020 and 6000 buffer data in and out for performance reasons. This means that your computer has a direct TCP connection to the modem, and the modem has a direct connection to the web server. The result is that your computer sees everything happening at LAN speed and LAN latency. So adjusting TCP settings on your computer is an effort in futility as by default, it is already tuned to work well at LAN speeds and latency.

So yes, that means the configurable TCP parameters that matter are on the modem itself, which you cannot control. That would only be a bad thing if those parameters are not optimized. I can tell you that I have seen no evidence on the DW4020 or the DW600 that communications parameters are not optimized. I can get as good or faster speeds on a DW6000 as I can on a fully tweaked DW4000. In fact the peaks I got were higher on the DW6000 on the same satellite, although I thought the average was about identical.

And to echo what Red Baron said, if HNS decides to cap your speed beyond whatever it is at now, tweaking your computer is meaningless anyway. They can cap your 4000 right now, and all the tweaking in the world wouldn't change that. Just ask folks with capped cable modems.

All tweaking does is make sure that your computer is getting all the available bandwidth. If the bandwidth is reduced, tweaking isn't helping anything. So as long as the DW6000 is giving you as much as is there to be got, stop worrying about not being able to tweak.

Now having said all that, you will be encouraged to run the LCCU when you get a DW6000. Please note that the newest version of the LCCU recognizes that adjusting TCP parameters on a client does absolutely nothing to enhance performance, so it doesn't do it. The only thing the latest version of the LCCU will do when you are on a DW6000 is adjust your maximum connections per server up to 15 for Internet Explorer. That will have a beneficial effect, but only if/when you aren't using the proxy, like HTTPS sites. I would manually adjust your maximum connections way higher than that, to about 64 or so to get the best performance for Web browsing outside the proxy. So there you go, you still get one tweak. ;-)

I will forewarn you with this caveat about speed. The in and out buffers that the DW6000 uses, in combination with the HPEP proxy, completely confuse the java speed tests. I have found no workaround for this, and at this point all I can say is the java speed tests are all but useless with the 6000. The upload speed might work, but downloads will report way slower than actual. I usually see downloads of about 600-800Kb/s with the occasional 1050Kb/s on the speed tests and yet real FTP downloads off peak were as high as 2500Kb/s, with an average probably around 1600Kb/s. This could cause us to re-think how we do the daily status thread.

If I missed a question, let me know. If I don't know the answer, I might be able to get it for you. My bottom line on the DW6000 is that it is easily the best product that has come out for Direcway yet. That doesn't mean it's perfect, but is is a very good thing to get that software off your computer and onto a dedicated processor, and it is also nice that it does this with a good degree of reliability. The blue lights are very pretty also. ;-)
--
Why must I feel like that? Why must I chase the cat? Nothin' but the dog in me.

unplugme : Gentlemen- eventually the DW6000 will be available on all birds but not now. In the case of the 4020 it only became available on G11 6 months after G4R and Sat Mex5 . Each satellite requires Hughes to install a gateway that supports the equipment. There will be an upgrade program for the DW4000 but I don't think you will see it till late first quarter next year. As far a changing equipment the transmitter on new units is different as it is set up for the eventual launch of a dual in-route-256K burstable- (2-3- months) but you will need a .98M dish to support dual in-route-same as 4020.
Clearly everyone will get to upgrade over a 12 month time frame but those who want it now will have to set up on G3R- no problem with footprint other than northern Canada- slightly bigger dishes.
No confrontation-just real information
--
Unplugme
