I'll be patching servers with SP4 next week, and I'm not anticipating any troubles there, from what I'm seeing.<br><br>I've also installed two new desktops and immediately plugged SP4 in. No troubles there...<br><br>Anyway, the updated desktop is as follows:<br><br>AMD Athlon XP 2000+<br>512MB PC2100 DDR  (2700? Whatever is the 266 MHZ)<br>Shuttle AK32A mobo with the original BIOS<br>errr... using Kirby's post as a guide here.. whew! gave lots of info!!<br>I'm also on Verizon with a westell bridge.. have a belkin router<br>Vid is an MSI Geforce ti4200<br>Have a Plextor CD-WR, and I use Nero.. no troubles there..<br>Using an Iomega Jazz drive on a SCSI card (no drivers - I don't boot off it).. no troubles.<br>I use AVG 6 Free and ZAF; no trouble with either (ZAF had a lot of 'repeat programs' on Win components, of course)<br><br>That's about it here!<br><i>[text was edited by author 2003-07-13 19:39:56]</i><br>]]></description>

First I saved key things like Kerio PF configuration, printed Snagit photos of the status of all services, disconnected from the internet, disabled McAfee, Kerio, Ati Multimedia Center, Lexmark printer stuff, made sure there was no Diskeeper automatic stuff running, and shut down whatever else I could think of that was running.<br><br>Installation was uneventful, and so far I haven't found any breakage of anything.  There was no loss of the Kerio config.  Services were in the same state as before, except MS provided a new one for wireless LANs.  My configuration is relatively mundane:<br><br>Abit KT-7 RAID w/ Highpoint Controller disabled; Bios UL102; Via 4.40v(a)p3 <br>800 Mhz Athlon TB @ 800; CPUfx Core cooler; Addtronics ET7896A case w/ Enermax 2x400W PS<br>2 x 128 MB Xerox PC133 SDRAM (CAS2/100 MHz; CAS3/133MHz) @ 133 MHz<br>PS2 Mouse and Keyboard; Mitsumi Floppy; SB Live! The browser closed without warning if there was an applet on the page and an error was generated and placed in a text document on the desktop.<br><br>It was a slipstreamed SP4, just testing. Hopefully it won't happen when I finally decide to use Sun's JVM on XP, but for now I am sticking with MS's JVM because of that one bad experience.]]></description>

<description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/391296"><b>reiko2</b></A> : Just saw some of the posts on SpeedDisk- Symantec sent me an e-mail- 2 in one day and on a Saturday!- saying they always update components thru Live Update when a new service pack comes out. If I still saw the warning- and I did- to go ahead and ignore it. I Drive Imaged everything and then tried it- seemed to work as well as usual. I haven't tried every program yet- so just letting you know. Hope that helps- thanks again for all the help today- reiko2]]></description>

Good find, MSeng!:-) The beta testers for SP4, in general, would have *all* the services enabled at their MS defaults during testing. If any services have been altered from the out-of-the-box defaults then all bets are off on how SP4 will behave.  <br><br>If a person has manually tweaked their services (ie BlackViper page), they should first set all the services back to the MS defaults before installing SP4.  Then go back and mess with them after the install.  Save some grief right up front. :D]]></description>

Got on the Net and everything was working at dial-up speeds. Had to confirm that the problem was with SP4 and not my DSL. Fired up the laptop... DSL is working fine. The heck with this...I have better things to do than Beta Test MSs SP4.<br><br>5 minutes later rebooted with restored SP2... no more problems. (Three minutes to load Google).<br><br>After a few hours of vainly trying a number of things, including installing IE6, I finally uninstalled the TCP/IP protocol, rebooted, and then reinstalled it.<br><br>Like magic, speeds went back up, and dare I say it, I think they are actually faster than before. Testing with the LA Linkline server gives 1730/216.<br><br>Another weird occurrence from the Microsoft Zone!]]></description>

CPU type / number of CPUs / mobo model / memory / application programs like Office, Proxo, firewall, anti-virus, browsers / external USB and Firewire devices plugged in.<br><br>IE Spell wasn't affected by SP4 on any of the W2K boxes I've been using. I have noticed one silly thing already that it fixed, I have an HP with the multimedia keyboard (which sux) the only thing that I like that works on the keyboard is the volume knob. SP3 stopped it from working, SP4 fixed it, works fine now. I will have to mess around with the PC and see what else I notice that is different. <description><![CDATA[<A HREF="/useremail/u/0"><b>anon</b></A> : Actually, I was a member here for over 3 years (cwnorris).<br>I never said anything about people being noobs, people that know what they are doing can also have differing opinions on patch management, among other things.<br>I guess my view is that, if I applied a patch (service packs just being a collection of patches), and it broke something that affected the use of network services for the people that use our network, I would have some explaining to do. And my answer better include, "that didn't happen when I tested it". Not to mention the work I would have to do to fix it. I suppose that is different than applying it to one machine, which a lot of people don't rely on for services.<br><br>Perhaps my view of this is tainted by my experience with service packs on NT4, where a few of them were utter crap, and caused many problems (especially when applied by someone who didn't research their ramifications, such as replacing vendor supplied device drivers). Better safe than sorry.<br><br>As for credibility, I didn't have much when I was a member ;)]]></description>

Clicking the OK button let the process continue, and I'm still waiting to see how it turns out.<br><br>FYI, I'm doing the install from a shared CD-ROM on the server. Not sure if the install likes UNC paths like \\Server\E$]]></description>
