My plan was to install both updates (811493 and 815021) individually. When I logged in the auto update globe was on the task bar and I decided just to use it to install the updates.

I installed 811493 and then reset the computer. When I logged back in my hard drive was missing. I uninstalled the update and reset my computer again and when it came back up my hard drive was still missing. I found that interesting.

I then decided to shut my computer and left it off for approximately 15-20 minutes. I then restarted my computer and logged back in, and the hard drive was there. I got to thinking that, maybe, I had to shut the computer off in order for the update to work properly on my PC.

I repeated the process, but this time I shut the computer off and let it set for about 15 minutes and then started it back up and logged back in. However, my hard drive was missing again. I uninstalled the patch again, and reset the computer, logged back in and the HD was there.

I then decided to take another approach to the update and went to the Microsoft update page and use that. I installed 811493 and reset the computer and guess what. The HD was there!! I don't know why the auto update was messing me up, but it was. I then installed 815021 without any problem from the update site.

I have noticed that my reboots and log-ons are a little slower since the updates, but other than that no real differences apparent yet.

Very few users are running 64 bit. If you purchase XP off a store shelf or if it came pre-installed on a new machine, then you're running the 32 bit version.

It had 2 critical updates listed which I installed. I don't know the numbers but they both said they were security updates. After they were done I did not reboot. I run a server so I only reboot when 100% necessary and in the middle of the night. Anyhow, haven't noticed any issues so far. Haven't tried any of my Norton products either. Also didn't run the full Windows update to check for normal updates listed.

That's why sensationalism works. That article referred to 600,000 downloads of the update, not 600,000 hosed computers. We need to read what we see not allow ourselves to be misled buy tabloid headline journalism.
I have never had a problem with any updates (Win XP). But I also keep all programs and drivers updated, including latest Nvidea driver windows update complains about.
I personally don't like Symantec products, so no problem there.

The information on new patches and updates arrives in my inbox via this service usually before it shows up on Windows Update. I like to download the patches first and install later when I am quite sure they pose no problems. This way I can archive them for later use also.

I had installed the original 811493 patch and experienced the problems discussed in the link I have posted above. I then uninstalled the patch. Problem solved.

The updated 811493 patch is not showing up in Windows Update on my XP SP1 machine either. This is normal and am sure it will be there in couple days time.

I believe 811493 slowed a lot of people’s pc to a crawl but I’m not to sure about hosing their internet connections. 811493 is not out yet in Windows Automatic Update.

I booted-up my XP laptop just over an hour a go and Windows Update has patch Q815021 as an Security update, listed under “Critical Updates and Service Packs”. This is why Windows Update came a knockin. Windows Automatic update has been quiet ever since Microsoft botched patch 811493. However, Windows Update came a knockin with patch Q815021 today. After reading subzero’s post I think I will hold off until I see some more feed back.

Anyone else here have the same experience as subzero?

I never d/l it on any of my comps because I heard about a possible problem with it from this site, and I was not willing..nor felt it necessary, to take the risk.
