Re: Post progress on msn dsl 1000 here! Hi ras_geller. Your error message indicates that one or more port mappings you tried to create conflicted with port mappings that were already active on your modem. A given port on the modem can map to only one internal host/port combo. To replace an existing port mapping, delete it first and then create the new mapping. (Click Refresh on the main screen to get a list of current port mappings, then select one or more and click Delete.)
Good luck, Jared |

 | reply to jaredjacobs Jared, your post help a lot as regards to adding ports 8000-8001 on 192.168.1.2. However the external Internet IP address which is the only address visible to the net also needs these ports opened. Even though shoutcast can see the open ports, it is publishing the external Internet IP address, which it is saying its not open. So how do I get the IPUpdater to tell the external IP address to open ports 8000-8001? Or am I SOL on this one? |

Made it Including the origional flash of the modem. We are opening the ports and having our modem lose internet connection and crap out and need to reset them, the programmers are having that same problem, so rather than us all bashing someone why not just cancel the service and go to another provider? Why do we not do that because we all love to just bitch bitch bitch. There is no other reason. I am a gamer and for one will not use DSL of any kind I am cable and there is nothing better. I am getting 5-7 MegaBits download and 1-3 Megabits upload.. (Keeping in mind that if you are living in a qwest state you max speeds with MSN are (0.6 MegaBits....) I am also only paying 30.00/month for 5 Megabit(Transfers 500Kbytes/s [and yes it is BYTES not BITS] and more, also VERY stable)(I Downladed media player 9 the other day at 692Kbytes/s) as compaired to 50.00/month for (lets work it out [640kbits / 8 = 80Kbytes/sec MAX] You'll probably never see that speed maybe 24-60Kbytes), so if you are a real hardcode gamer, then you are noting going to be very liked in the gaming world with a ping time through the roof, hell might as well just go back to dialup... |

 | reply to jaredjacobs ok, i deleted all the previous port mappings, then attempted to open the specific ports i wanted. now one program (furthurnet) says i am still behind a firewall and says to open port 5111 and port 5331 on the other computer networked through the router, which i already did. the bit torrent program says to have ports 6881-6999 open, which i think i also did. as far as the bit torrent file sharing program, i don't know how to check if i am still behind the firewqall. but when i compare transfer speeds with others on the same torrent, i am still much slower. i am unsure what i need to do to get these ports open through the firewall so i can maximize these p2p file sharing programs. |

 | reply to jwizard0304 Hi again. Your question makes it sound like your concept of a port mapping is fuzzy. The mapping resides within the modem, which has two IP addresses: one visible from the Internet and one visible from your computer (192.168.1.1). When you create a port mapping, you are telling the modem where to redirect incoming Internet traffic that it would otherwise block. In your case, requests coming from the Internet to your modem on ports 8000-8001 get forwarded to your computer (192.168.1.2). That's all there is to it. If it's not working, you're probably out of luck. But I'm no expert... |

 | Ok thanks Jared, As I understand. 192.168.1.2 is the address I should indicate for folks to connect to my shoutcast broadcast. »192.168.1.2:8000/listen.pls |

That IP is a local IP on your computer. It is not Publicly accessible. You might consider using the webcheck tool on www.webcheck.orrtek.com to check your external visibility. -- Time does not exist where there is no consciousness. |

| Right, I see that I need to use my host address (name of my computer)and not the (192.168.1.2) Hopfully folks can connect to port 8000 by using that since 8000 is an open port.
Thanks [text was edited by author 2003-08-11 19:33:06] |

 | Alright jwizard0304, let's try this again. You want to direct people on the Internet to port 8000 on your modem, not on your computer. Your computer is not visible at all to people on the Internet (neither by IP address nor by hostname). Your modem is. It will automatically forward traffic it receives to your computer according to the port mappings you set up.
The external IP address of your modem is what you need to put in your listen.pls links. It does not begin with 192.168. Go to »192.168.1.1 and click on Connection Status to find out your modem's external IP address. For more detailed instructions, refer back to this earlier post.
Cheers, Jared |

Then maybe MSN could let people know of the defect before they lock them into the 1 year contract? Or maybe just allow people who are obviously having issues after the fact out of their contract? Or maybe provide those people with a functional modem? But MSN does none of these things. And they sell the service fully aware that they are deceiving people when they allow them to sign the contract without divulging the issues they are having with the modems. Thats close to fraud in my book and while it may not be vile enough to be against the law it is more than enough to piss people off and make them feel abused and misled.

corms join:2002-01-06 East Bay, NS | reply to Kioti No offense but before you bark do some research.. MSN does not put people on contract other companies do.... DSL is monthly charges and if you call qwest for example to signup for service you are put on a monthly charge for the service there is no 1 year lock on any DSL Accounts. Why do you think that BestBuy is being sued? They are selling contracts to people Even without computers and MSN has been working with these customer due to Bestbuy's practices. However if you were a company and i ordered something from you, kept it for say 6 months and then call you and said i do not want this why are you charging, the chances you would refund my money is not likly, how do you know i have not used it for the last 6 months.... If you call MSN and you are on a contract, you are DIALUP.. I once worked for them awhile ago and also Qwest and do not even recall a DSL contract only DIAL.. I agree that the practices may be shady to some people (usually the ones who want what they do not have or the ones who think they know it all, which are the same ones who come on these message boards and bi**h at the people who are doing the programming and stuff to try and crack the modems because they are not working fast enough either and that person wanted it yesterday), but the modems are not defective IT IS CALLED NAT, it is a major function in NETWORKING, been around forever.. close to 85% of MSN customers are older people or other that want to access their porn faster and do not care if the modem is firewalled and there is no secrets on it Again it is called NAT (NETWORK ADDRESS TRANSLATION). anyone with 1/2 a brain will know that if the modem is dropping a private ip it is running through NAT and that means firewall.. So f*** the complaining and do one of 2 things cancel the service If i was not getting what i wanted then I would cancel and go somewhere else or go to DIAL or you can go but a CISCO 678 they are 20 bucks on Ebay and are DMT modems, call MSN and get your KeyCodes (1 username and 2 is the password) and program the modem..
Here are the steps:
At the CBOS# (telnet 10.0.0.1 if you have an exec pass if not gotta use hyperterm)
SET NVRAM ERASE set ppp wan0-0 ipcp 0.0.0.0 set ppp wan0-0 dns 0.0.0.0 SET PPP WAN0-0 LOGIN keycode1@msndsl.net set ppp wan0-0 password keycode2 set password exec [make up a password] set nat enable set dhcp server enable set web disable -- These lines were the quick fix set web port 65000 -- for code red and are not necessary write reboot
now if the cbos is the newest version. go buy a router and do the following at the CBOS#
SET NAT ENTRY ADD 10.0.0.2
This will open all ports on the CISCO to 10.0.0.2..
Other wise if you want to use a hub, then port fowarding is the only option.. and that is not good for multiple computers as you can only open the ports to one computer. With a router you can DMZ one computer and open ports to another..
to just open a port..
SET NET ENTRY ADD 10.0.0.2 80 TCP or SET NET ENTRY ADD 10.0.0.3 333 UDP
and then there are no worries, and MSN does support the cisco's as well. Now i know these will work in Qwest states but not sure on the other Telco's if the keycodes will work the same..
As for my cable, yes it is 30.00/month and includes the modem and there is no cable lease as well (Download is set at 6 MegaBits down and 3 MegaBits up) Till all the new fiber is install then the caps are expected to go to 12-18 Megabits down and 6-9 megabits up) for the same price..

Cisco 678 sell between 90 and 120 bucks on Ebay. Been trying to pick one up for about 2 weeks and none have closed under 80 or so dollars before shipping.

 | reply to jaredjacobs Ok I see that it will not work for me. Although your tool opens the ports and they are accessible via the internal (192.168.1.2) the ports are still inaccesible when pointing to the external ip address (216.161.xx.xx:8000/
So I am left with getting rid of the dsl 1000 or finding a cheap or free host to stream my audio content. Thank you for your help. |

I'm curious what you see when you point to the external IP. I may have an idea. -- Time does not exist where there is no consciousness. |
|
 | Hi Phoenixn. Its a shoutcast server I have running on my machine. What I see when using either RealOne or Windows Media Player is "Unable to establish a connection with the server" and "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because the server is not responding. If you entered a URL or path to play the file, verify that it is correct. If you clicked a link to play the file, the link may not be valid."
For RealOne and WinAmp the location to the server is »216.161.68.19:8000/listen.pls and for WMP: »216.161.68.19:8000/
I have no problem when using 192.168.1.2 because I am on the same machine. |

Both links work great now! Whatever you did works. -- Time does not exist where there is no consciousness. |

| Yes, the 192.168.1.2:8000 link works only for you (when at your computer or another locally networked computer), and the 216.161.68.19:8000 link works only for people on the Internet reaching your computer via your modem. Congratulations! [text was edited by author 2003-08-15 03:11:41] |

 | Well, I finally got to see the Internet Gateway. It showed up when I upgraded the firmware. But, it disappeared. I got it again when I installed uPNP from the WinXP disc.
Is Internet Gateway supposed to be DISCONNECTED? When I tell it to connect, it says "connected" but really seems to stay disconnected on the Network Connections screen.
I cannot run any type of program to force the maps. They all tell me "connection forcefully rejected." Can anyone help? The modem works great, for normal use.
Also, is there any way to use an Intel Pro 2100 with QWest/MSN? Maybe I'll just swap to Earthlink and get a different modem, ... hopefully.
The adding of ports on the Internet Gateway does not work for me. I show no improvement on any program that seems to want to use them.
Thanks for any help!! Please, help! I spend about 6 hours yesterday messing with this. I always figured the problems I had connecting through specific ports were on the other side of the line.. hahaha. |
