jwsmiths4 : Hey I've been around this forum too for I guess going on two years now. I started using Macs w/ the original Mac back in 1984, my father bought one several months before I was born and I started using it before I actually have vivid memories of being alive. The computer lasted until around 1990 (broken when moving to our new apartment) and my parents never bothered to have it fixed - in fact they threw it away :-\. We got our next computer in 1995, a Performa 6115CD w/ a 15 Apple MutliSync display and an Apple LaserWriter printer. I think that computer was 66Mhz (or was it 60?) and came with like 8MB of RAM and had a NuBus expansion slot. It lasted for 11 years and a LOT of abuse. The only part that ever broke in it was the 2X CD-Rom which AppleCare replaced for us in home with a newer 4X speed CD-Rom. In 1997 my father bought me a Performa 6400/200 to reward me for doing so well in school and I used that until 1999. I then built a Windows PC with a friend to play games on and sadly used that computer until I went off to college. My father offered to buy me an iMac G4 but I said "no" - too proud to take his money or more honestly just too stupid not to... I wound up getting a Comcrap PC laptop from Best Buy (I wanted to have a laptop for college) but it broke so quickly and fiercely that I was without it for most of the first year of owning it. So I used my girlfriend's Dell laptop although it had its fair shares of hardware problems too. I then finally traded in my Comcrap for a Toshiba laptop which was honestly not a bad computer - though very very heavy and not very pleasant to look at. I somehow wound up buying 3 PC desktops during that time period. I had lost touch with my Mac roots I then bought an iBookG4 - telling my girlfriend it was for her... but she never actually got to use it :-D. I traded that up for a 15" PowerBook and sold my Toshiba on eBay. I converted the rest of my PC desktops to Linux and FreeBSD and bought a mini as soon as they came out. My fiancé, since just before I traded up to my PowerBook, then got jealous so I bought her a slightly revised iBookG4 which she is more than happy with and has used to help spread our cause. After putting my mini in the living room hooked up to my Smell 20" widescreen LCD my roommates got jealous and both picked up Mac laptops. I have probably converted anywhere from 5-10 people to Mac in the last two years by letting them use mine and showing them how powerful Apple's computers really are. My next purchase will likely be to upgrade my line-up when Apple releases the Intel mac desktops. I'm probably going to be selling two more of my Intel Linux boxes to start saving that money towards the Intel Macs. BTW I am 21, I am a college student who has paid my own way through college w/ a part time job at Best Buy's Geek Squad (where I am working on converting my co-workers to the right side) and I hope to start Med school next fall.

elctrczipper : Hello, Randall here. First purchase was an iMac g3 and mistakenly thought Apple os was a headache, and bought a dell. Windows IS a headache( with some good points), and I'm back with an iMac G5 and the full realization that the learning curve is the headache. Keeping an eye on Linspire also though as I respect Mr. Jobs, but I don't worship him.:D ;)

My computer experience goes back to 1975 and I'm a long time PC user. I also have had several macs for quite a number of years. I can even remember looking at the first Mac when it first debuted. I am employed in the PC business.

My Mac list: Apple IIe, LC II, LC III, Quadra 650, Two 4400/200s, and my recent mini (top model with superdrive.) It's hard to resist buying yet another mini...

I'm currently developing programs with REALbasic. I'm wrapping up a 'math drill' program that I'm hoping my nephew will like.

realism1 : First comp: TI99/4A. Parsec, Hunt the Wumpus, Make a little man do jumping jacks, etc. 7 year old fun.
Years of using other friend's machines. The Apple Machines always stood out....then, the dark ages. Didn't run across a mac for a loooong time. Used a roommates pc for a bit, used the pcs in the library, played pc games with some folks. Got reintroduced to mac in graphic design class. Had a teacher who didn't teach us anything about the mac itself, just gave us assignments to carry out. We all did fine, though it wasn't easy. Been using a mac ever since. Currently have a AGP G4 (originally 500 Mhz), upgraded to a 1.7Ghz, radeon 8600, extra 120GB HD, 2Gigs Ram, Pioneer 108 DVD-RW, + a 1.67 17inch Powerbook AL with 1 Gig Ram. Tiger on both. Airport extreme network with Airport Express, mainly for the iTunes bit, and secondarily for extending range, though not really needed,,,,sometimes it's fun to take the laptop into the middle of the street. Currently use both machines to build websites, create various graphic design projects, assist in my main love, painting, watching movies on the road, and to reply to posts on forums in the middle of the night, when I should really be in bed. later.

and an iBook that my wife lets me use occasionally.

Heh. The list is much longer now, topped with a Dual 1.8GHz G5. Other notables are a Duo 210, a Plus, an 8500, a PowerComputing PowerCenter 132, a IIci, an iMac and a Sun Ultra 1. We also have a new iBook and a PowerBook in the house.

linicx : I'm a recovering Windows user too. I've had my Mac a little over a year now. The OS is certainly different than the one Microsoft sells, and the machine itself is much different than the PCs I've ever seen.

I've been using Macs regularly since, oh, 1989 or so. I came from an Apple II background (though my first box was a TRS-80 Model I! At least I had a disk drive), and somehow resisted the temptation to get a //gs instead. There were plenty of Macs for me to use in college (I ran a large Mac lab on campus by 1990 - I was a quick study!), but didn't get my own until 1993 when I very wisely chose a closeout IIci over the then-brand new IIvx.

After upgrading the IIci to death (Daystar Turbo040 and the whole nine yards), I moved up to an 8500/120 in 1996. After upgrading that to death (up to a G3/400), I gave it to my sister and bought a G4/400 (Gigabit ethernet) in 2000.

I also had an eMate 300 for a couple of years, and now that's also in my sister's possession. My iBook/500 is serving my portable needs quite well, thanks.

Oh, and I picked up a Laserwriter 16/600PS for about $140 on eBay a few months ago, completing the Apple picture.

I plan on upgrading my current G4 some more, most likely adding a Sonnet 800MHz or 1GHz. I've already got a gig of RAM, a WD 80JB (an amazingly fast drive), and a Radeon AGP. I don't plan on buying a new tower until 2003 sometime, when it becomes more clear what direction Apple will go in for CPUs.

Always interesting to revisit the past every now and again... So, what happened to me since July of 2002?

I did end up buying a Sonnet 800MHz G4 upgrade for my Gigabit G4 a few months later, and it's been running perfectly ever since.

Bought a refurbed Dual 2.0GHz PowerMac G5, June 2004.

The iBook gave up the ghost a few weeks ago (reed switch problem I should be able to fix in one of my few spare moments), so I replaced it with a refurbed 12" Powerbook G4/1.33GHz.

Anyway, I have an eMac. I got it in 2003. It came with a 40GB hard drive and 128MB of RAM. But I've swapped them for a 120GB hard drive and 1GB of RAM. Other little extras include an external DVD burner, and external 120GB hard drive, and JBL Creature Speakers. I'm very happy with my current set up.

Also, rumor has it, that I'll be getting a PowerBook at work soon. Then, I will be PC-free.

It's also worth noting that all of my meager knowledge about Macs and their associated products, I've learned from this site. It's an incredible resource. Thanks everyone...

I started in high school with a Royal Typewriter and moved to Key Punch in the 60's - which was long after graduation - because my chess partner was learning to program the first main frame at Caterpillar Tractor Company. I hated KP, he went on to teach the computer how to play chess, and I never looked at a computer until the early 90s.

I started out with a DOS box with 2 mb RAM and within 6 months had progressed through three computers and into Windows 3.0 with a PS2 loaded with 24 MB RAM. It cost me $6 that year to learn I didn't have enough memory to use AOL. Awhile after that I got a dial up account using my fancy new 28. 8 modem.

I started reading about Mac in 1994 or earlier, but it wasn't until ten years later that my cousin sent me her PTP 1996 model Mac clone in January. I bought my first real Mac, a 1.25 G4 MDD with Combo Drive that August. I've since added a second hard drive, a Super Drive, a 160 GB External Fire Wire drive, hub, NAT firewall, DSL and I added 1024 RAM. It is the best computer I ever owned. I also have an empty B&W case I plan to fill soon, and I wouldn't mind owning a Ruby, too.

Hopefully an iMac G5 or PowerMac when I stop spending money on notebooks ;).

and my current Mac is a PowerBook G4 12" Rev C. Running Tiger of course!

Although I have always worked supporting them, I had never personally owned a PC till about 3 years ago. I bought one for games only as I feel that's all they are really good for, but to each their own. :D

blueOne : OK fine...you guys got me. I always saw this thread floating around, but never did "sign in". So here it goes:

The first computer that I ever used was my brother's Commodore 64 back in '82 when I was only 5 years old. I really didn't know how to do much, other than one line of code that would make a sentence tile and scroll down. Also played a couple of games on it that loaded from a cassette tape!! Next up was the Commodore Amiga, which was mainly a gaming machine. This thing put out bad-ass graphics for its time (64 bit I believe?) and all my friends would come over and play games on it.

Then there was a HUGE gap between the Amiga and my next computer, which would be an Apple PowerPC 7200/200. That thing was a tank! I kept that for a few years, and now I own a 450 Sawtooth pumped up to 1ghz and 1.67 Powerbook.

I started with Apple back in the day when my father bought an Apple II. I also remember playing games like Choplifter and Wizardry (back before you needed a number on the end!). I even enjoyed a fine product from subLOGIC called Flight Simulator before MS bought it.

I drifted away from the Apple family after the Apple IIe got long in the tooth and never had a Mac until this past November. It started like so many others these days with the purchase of a 3G iPod. I was so impressed with the style, function, and ease of use I decided to take a look at the new iMacs that were just coming out.

Now I own a 17" iMac, converted my brother to a 12" iBook G4. Converted my brother-in-law to a 17" iMac G5. I love what I produce with my Mac (photo albums, dvds, etc.)

I still use a pc as well (I work with all pcs) and I find myself less and less inclined to boot that old dog up anymore for anything but gaming.

I've been lurking in this forum for a few months now, but I only acquired my first Mac a few days ago. I've been thinking about replacing my Dell notebook with a Powerbook sometime this fall, but the opportunity came up the other day for a $65 G4 (AGP) 450Mhz w/640MB RAM. How could I say no?!

I think I'm becoming a convert, which is scary and exciting at the same time. :huh:

I'm Steve. I started with Apple on my friend's IIc and we got a IIe shortly after. Unfortunately, Apple has outgrown my wallet, so my latest machine is a lowly eMac G4 1.42Ghz instead of the dual processor G5 I'd have liked to buy. I converted my wife to Apple as soon we were hitched. I think it might have been in our wedding vows, but I could be wrong. ;)

jtk7 : I'm Justin. I have a hybrid job... tech support/graphics/advertising all at once. This is a new position for me, and because of it I inheirited a G4 for use when an advertiser sends us Mac format files for an ad (they almost always include their fonts; for me to output a correct PDF, I need the fonts, and it's easier to just use a Mac than try to track down/convert all those fonts for use on PC). So using the G4 planted the seed. My PC crashes all the time, but the Mac will sit there with Acrobat/Quark/Photoshop/Illustrator all open at one time for a month. I love that stability.

I started out with a Classic in 1990. I still have it, and I think it still works. In 1995 I got a job where they only had PCs. Pretty soon I had gotten a PC as well. I've upgraded a ton of times, including fairly recently, to an Athlon64. It's super unstable, and every other day something new seems to go wrong with it. Now that I'm doing things like spyware removal at work, I just don't want to deal with that crap at home. Plus I do some video work in my spare time, and I'm not real happy with Premiere (especially after having used Final Cut a little bit).

My PowerMac arrives tomorrow, so that's when the fun starts... :)

Nemokrad : I first used an Apple II playing Oregon Trail in elementary school. Then the school upgraded to LCII's and I got a Performa at my house, which I used for a while but then got neglected for years once we got an IBM clone. Then I discovered a game on a Mac at school called Bolo that was super popular about 10 years ago because it was one of the first good multiplayer games for the Mac, and we all played it on the Appletalk network at school (I still play the Windows version of it from time to time because it has gathered a faithful community. About 5 people play the original Mac version regularly, it's more like a cult). After that I pretty much used Windows until about '03 when I got a job installing/setting up new Macs in schools, then teaching teachers about their iBooks (funny thing is most teachers don't like to learn new things). Fell in love with OS X doing that, but I still use my Windows box for gaming. Trying to get more Macs around the house, but converting people is hard work.

Anyway, I'm Brian, a high school student living in New Jersey. When I first came to my high school this year, I was introduced to Macs. Before I always had the 'ewww.... Macs' thought about them. I also had other silly misconceptions about them, such as 'you can't get software for them!' and other crap.

I soon grew a liking to the Macs, especially the G5 Dual 2.0's we have in one lab. Come November, I knew I wanted a Mac. First I was going to get an old PM G4, then an old eMac, then a refurb eMac, then a new eMac, then my mom thought portability would be good, so a new iBook. I decided to wait until after MWSF in January to see what it would hold. A week or so later, I ordered my Mac mini (1.42/512).

I'm happy with my Mac. I plan on making the rest of my computing purchases Mac - except for maybe a pc fileserver here and there, since I still keep up support for a large network of PCs in my home. Soon, I don't know how soon, but before September 2006, I will be buying a 15" Powerbook. As of now I have a Dell laptop, but while it does the job OK when it works, I'd be much happier with the Powerbook. I won't be taking any more CAD classes until college after Sept 2006, so I won't be bringing my PC laptop any more after that point. Cisco is happily cross-platform.

I probably will stay with Apple portables. Instead of buying a seperate iMac or PM G5, I'd probably buy a nice monitor for my PB and continue upgrading it. Come time for college in the Fall of 2008 (or a couple of years later if I wait to get the pb now), I probably would leave my Powerbook with my family and purchase a new one for college. I don't think a desktop would be the best idea, since I'll be going to school for engineering. Maybe I'd want a PC-based desktop for some of the engineering apps, but probably nothing fancy. Once I get out of college, I may end up just upgrading my Powerbook, as I very well may end up in a career with a large amount of permanent travel.

Anyway, no iPods here. I don't listen to enough music to warrant it. I continue encouraging mac use, and helped a friend choose a G4 iBook.

That's about it.

My next Mac purchase will most likely come within the next few months and be a G5 iMac.

I love the beauty of OSX. Constantly trying to get people to understand Macs and do away with Windows. Not working. :(

orinoco : Name's Jaden. I have/had an old Macintosh and a Macintosh Classic II, both of which no longer work. I used Macs in school up until high school, which was mostly Windows. Current Mac is a Beige G3 running 10.3, 9.2, and 8.6. I picked up an iPod Photo a few weeks back too. I plan to purchase a new Mac this summer.

I just started using macs again, and my current one is a G3 B/E, 300 MHz, 64 MB Ram, 8x CD-RW (added in), 6 Gig HDD, Mac OS 8.6, Zip 100 drive (disabled)....it's used, but it's the AV (Education) model.

I also have an LC II....took it out, works, do not know specs.

I love the Mac, and am buying a PowerBook or iBook soon.

SandyLP : I was a Windows user for about 10 years. I bought a 2.5 G5 in July of 2004 along with the 20" Aluminum Monitor and Isight. I also got Adobe's Creative Suite, Apple Works and Office for Mac. The G5 been a joy to use. I gave everything related to the PC (and the PC) to my daughter. I'm excited to be a MAC convert! ;)

When I had my first Apple IIe experience I was in 5th grade, in 1985. My parents bought one with a spinnaker game called "storymaker" or something like that. I also had a game called "Wings of fury" that I adored. I even hid it because I loved to play it so much.

I was sad when that game would not load any more... :(

I "since then" have found better games and such but nothing like flying that little plane and bombing islands.

Well, I've used both PCs and Apples/Macs (and Tandys and Commodores and...) ever since about 1985 or whatever year that was when I was in 1st grade, heh. I didn't buy my first Mac though until a couple years ago when I finally got a PB. What did it for me was seeing how OS X was unix based. And I really needed it for a side project that basically ended up paying for my purchase :)

Since I'm doing that project every year now, it seems, lets see what other SJ products I can add to my collection :)

Our first new Mac was a Performa 630CD, the second was a Bondi rev.A iMac, with lots of used/borrowed/salvaged ones in between. Usually about 5 Macs running in the house at any given time.

I work in tech support for a small K-8 school district and am responsible for about 500 Macs, mostly old Centris/Quadra/Performa models. It is amazing how they just keep running. All are networked on our 10/100 LAN, and the students use them daily to access reading and math applications.

I also take care of our PowerSchool, Helpdesk, and Read Naturally servers, which are all Macs. As the only tech in the district, I have lots of other reponsibilities as well.
IP Cameras, WAPS, pulling cable, adding drops, etc., etc.

I am glad I found this forum, as OS X is still pretty new here. It's nice to be able to get a quick answer from somone that actually knows what they are talking about....;)

My 1st PC was an 8088, I ran a BBS on an XT with a 300 baud modem. The 1st program I ever wrote was in Cobol followed quickly by one in Fortran.

Always been a PC user, mostly running linux (since slackware was pretty much the only distro, and loaded off floppies).

Have coveted a mac since the g4 imac's came out, but they were out of my price range. Then along came the mini, drove 4 hours the day they were released to the apple store in Orlando to pick mine up.

I called the store at 8:57AM that morning & bought mine over the phone, and drove there that night to pick it up.

I'm a network engineer well versed in cisco, foundry, and various other assorted pieces of network gear.

I grew up a Commodore kid. I started with a VIC20, had several 64's (including an SX-64 "portable"), and 128's. I then switched to Amigas, starting with a 500 and ending with a 2500 running a 50mhz Rocket Launcher and 7MB of memory. This was 1993 or so, so that was a VERY fast machine at the time. By comparison, I bought a Pentium 60 to replace it over a year later.

I've been using Wintel machines (although most of my newer ones are AMD-powered) but decided a Mac would make a great addition to the stable since i do web design. Might as well make sure my designs look good on all the platforms I can. :)

I just love this stuff! I'm glad I live by San Francisco and have 10 Apple stores to choose from to blow all my money in.

Merlin2960 : Started with a blank slate in 1985 when I walked into the computer store to buy one for a Non-Profit agency. I said, "Show me your best computer." We went to an IBM model and they couldn't figure out how to turn it on. Really. I walked over to a Mac II and hit the power key on and it started right up. I started playing around with it while they got some guy out from the back to power up the IBM...by the time they finished arguing whether they needed to enter //* or *// I made up my mind and said, "I'll take this one" pointing to the Mac. They tried to talk me out of it but I just laughed. It maxed out with 5MB of RAM and an 80 MB drive!

Later I bought a II cx for home and gradually maxed out the RAM at 16MB and the hard drive grew to 500MB! My mother uses this one now.

In the 90's I bought a PPC 7100 for the office and an 8600 for home. I augmented the 8600 to 1GB of RAM and added a 60GB ATA drive and a Radeon video card.

Last year I bought a G5 2GHz dualie with a 250GB SATA drive, Bluetooth and the Radeon 9800 video card. I networked the G5 and the 8600 using a Motorla SPG-1000 gateway cable modem/e-net hub/wireless router and printer server.

I have connected my Tivo to my G5 where I edit and burn archive dvds of my favorite shows and movies. I'm waiting for Tivo-to-go to be released so I can transfer the material over e-net rather than by analog-digital transfer in real time.

Microsoft probably has learned a lot from working with Apple and hence I see a lot of similarities between Mac OS X and XP (IMHO). In fact, I am testing it out right now, entering this message using Camino within the Mac OS within my XP Pro. I actually want to get it optimized so that I can do some of the things that I have seen on PearPC.net --like ---

-having Windows, launching
-Linux, Launching
-PearPC with MacOS X, Launching
-VirtualPC, running PC Anywhere and
-connecting to my original Windows OS.

BTW I do have an LC3..its in my computer museum, next to a TI99-4A and my Atari 800. My wife has a Mac Quadra from our in-laws. I never said I hated macs, but its nice to know that the Mac is not so proprietary...

I also have a 15 inch flat panel iMac running OS 10.3.5. I used a PC for a short time and really didn't like it in any way. It's Apple all the way for me.

I just thought I would throw in a jarring message here. I am running Mac OS X...on my PC! Yup that's right, I don't need to pay 5 grand plus or whatever for an IBook, Itanium, G5, G4, whatever.. I have it running on top of Win XP Pro, as well as running it on top of a Debian Linux Partition, on the same PC (I flip back and forth)...so I am not really a convert per se, but just absorbing the Mac into the PC world, just like the Borg (and perhaps like Micro$oft too...lol)

And to all you naysayers, it is running just fine. You need a pentium 4 2.00 gHz for it to run comfortably, and set aside at least 256 Megs of RAM for it to run. I use it to test web apps I create and check it under Mac IE, Camino, Netscape and Safari. And I can run MSN Messenger and (heh) MS Office. But pretty much everything else (vid editing, working etc.) I do on my PC. So why go PC or Mac when you can have both (and if you have money, I suppose you can get both a PC and a Mac while you are at it)?

BTW it does not break the Mac OS EULA if your PC has an Apple label or logo (it really says "onto an Apple-labelled or Apple-licenced computer.") so I put an Apple sticker on the bottom of my PC. However, I do suggest that you use your own copy of Mac OS X if you wish to do so. It is after all, a nice OS. And so is Windows (when used right). And so is Linux (when used right)...

And along with the topic, my name is Eddie, and I my first experience with Apples was programming on the Apple 1 and 2 in elementary school. That should really set an age for me....

jiggles : My 12" Powerbook G4 came in this morning. Believe it or not, it's my first mac.

My first apple was an Apple //e back around '79 or '80. I kinda leapfrogged the whole Mac thing and ended up buying a NeXTstation in '90/'91. I ended up being a NeXTstep developer for the next 6 years or so, even running NS on Intel hardware. When NeXTstep died, painful as it was, I moved on. Been using Windows and Linux and programming Java since.

I'm glad that NS was resurrected and lives on in OS X. I am probably going to go back to developing on it again.

So, this is sort of a sheep coming back into the fold, not because of the Mac but because of OS X/NS. I'm relearning all those things I've missed for so long. Should have done this much sooner.

Relatively new to these forums and this site, but not to Mac - been using Apple computers dating back to the first Apple ][ as a junior in high school (my best friend had an Apple ][g with the cool monitor raised up over the CPU and we played lots and lots of Taipan). Loved to play with the POKE & PEEK commands, too. Then came college and my school was one of the first to put Mac 512Ks in the computer lab, right next to the honkin' mainframe monitor where we had to do FORTRAN homework. Nothing was sweeter than sending a finished paper to the laser printer 100 feet away in the housing office, or creating a graphic in MacPaint with the pixel tool that ended up on a t-shirt in living color. Been using Macs ever since (still have an SE 30 that works flawlessly, even without the internal fan, has the fireworks screensaver and can play Strategic Conquest from time to time). Then went from a Centris 610 to a Beige G3 DT (gave it to my sister all tricked out with USB and firewire and extra large HDs and RAM running Jaguar perfectly) and now I've got a 14" Dual USB iBook 800/640 with Panther connected to the internet via a Graphite Base Station and DSL. Can't wait to upgrade to Airport Express later this year and finally get my printer into the remote mix.

And I'm glad I found this forum - been lurking for a while, mostly seeing what's what, and I think I'll stick around for a while longer. Maybe some others who are newer will chime in, too.

Evolution : After a year of stealing my brothers 800MHz G3 iBook, I finally went out and had a reason to buy a laptop for school, so I bought a 15" Powerbook G4. Its bone stock for right now, and the ram NEEDS a bumping up because 256MB is NOT enough. I will be attending Drexel University in the fall and will major in Information Systems, and will have my MBA in 5 years with their 5 year Co-Op program. I plan on purchasing a Dual G5 by the time school gets closer. I still use my PC but am completely Windows free as I run Gentoo Linux.

I purchased my first ever computer, a Macintosh Performa 6116CD in May of 1996. Never used a windows computer, don't even know how to.

At school, my Board of Education provides me with Macs to work on, as well as a laptop for working at home. I have another Mac desktop at home.

I TRULY couldn't do what I'm doing without the help of the Mac making my life easier. I'm also someone that believes in .Mac big time!!! My entire Band Website is hosted within its 100MB, and I can write my Marching Band music in Sibelius, and upload it right to my Band Website so my students (who are split up in FIVE different buildings several blocks apart... I told you it was the largest high school in New Jersey...) can download the parts and the associated MIDI files right to their own computers.

Otto : Hello everybody. I'm new to the Mac world. I got my first Mac, a 12" iBook G4 at 800mhz/640MB RAM/60GB HDD/AE, in mid March 2004. So far, it's been nothing short of amazing. I've been using PCs since 1988, when I was 4 years old... so I've seen lots of horrendous stuff with PCs that thankfully are completely absent in the Mac world. I love my iBook... it's stable, fast, good looking and essentially, the perfect portable.

If things go well, I hope to make my primary desktop computer a Mac too (maybe a G5 :):)).

Although I've already made a few posts in the forum, I thought I'd say hello again. I bought my very first Mac (G4 PowerBook 12 inch) 2 months ago and I LOVE IT!!!!! Macs are the not so secret best kept secret of the computer world.

I've been running Macs in my home office for the past 10 years while running Win XP and 2K boxen in the office. I've found this forum to be a good resource for information. As someone mentioned above, I love OSX but dislike the 'tribal' attitude of users who diss the Mac (or XP for that matter), but don't have any hands-on knowledge to make informed comparisons. Right now, I run Win 2k through VPC 6.1 on Panther to access my XP box using MS Remote Desktop Connection....very cool solution, even through emulation..just like being there!

Macs have been quite prevalent at LaRC (Langley Research Center) for awhile now. Funny thing is, I'm one of 5 Mac techs supporting those approx. 1000 Mac systems while there are about 13 or so PC techs supporting a few hundred more Windows boxes. Quite telling IMO…

Oh yeah. What's this RC5 I keep seeing people post about? (perhaps I should get up off my laurels and do a search, eh ;) )

About the name: don't remember where I picked it up. Saw it somewhere and it stuck. Thought it was fitting, given my profession. hehe

I'm Paul, back in 1998 I was hired as a Computer Repair Technician. The store on a university campus also sold Macs and it was one of my job responsibilities to to repair them.

Through self-training, talking to Mac gurus in various tech support departments on campus and "trials by fire" I quickly learned the system, the quirks and tricks necessary to get around them.

Daniel : My name is Daniel. I am coming to Mac because of OS X's GUI and Unix underpinnings. To be honest, the employees in Mac stores scare me; they seem like Mormons, Borg, and Branch Dividians all rolled up into one, only with way more conviction -- and many of the Mac ~~followers~~ users seem to have the same religious feelings associated with their use of the platform.

I am trying to deal not only with the fact that I am using the Mac, but more importantly, deal with the fact that I love everything I see about it. Nothing is more freaky than being in the middle of a conversation about OS X, and realizing that I am trying to convince some PC user that it has a lot to offer. I sort of expect to see my limbs becoming cybernetic at some point when that happens. The other day I was actually thinking about putting one of those white Apple stickers on my Jetta. I quickly SSH'd to a Gentoo box and moved around the file system a bit to purge myself of the evil.

In short, I love OS X (despite the fact that I haven't even got my first Mac yet), and I am still grappling with the fact that many Mac enthusiasts (Brett Larson from TechTV, for example) frighten me in a very profound way.

So yeah, that's where I am at with the whole thing right now...

For the downloads thing:
Do you have Toast installed? If so, you need to tell the computer to open .zip files in Stuffit Expander.
Is Stuffit Expander on the computer?
Is Disk Copy on the computer?

After you mount a file you download the mounted "drive" will contain files that state specifically that you need to dbl click to install...sometimes you simply drag the application in the mount and put it in your Application directory...it can be that simple.

Sounds like you need a basic book...like Missing OSX manual..or OSX for Dummies.

GoD of KaOs : I think you're having the same problem I was having when got my first Mac a few weeks ago. I would download something and it wouldn't mount, it was giving mounting errors. I ended calling Mac support and I guess I did some form of a system restore to fix it. Unfortunately since I'm new to Mac if forgot exactly how I did that system restore. I would just give a Mac Support a call.

he love me : I just got a refurbished G3 ibook 900mhz for apple on Monday. Longtime windows user. The wife and I are still learning the new way. Everything is running nice, especially when I added the 256ram today and the airport card yesterday. The only problem that i'm having is how to do broadband tweaks correctly. I have earthlink cable 3000/384, but my internet speed seems to run a tad slower. But, overall, everything else is super.

She's been wanting a Powerbook G4 for the longest time, and took advantage of the grant to buy a 15" loaded to the gills (1.25 GHz proc, 1GB RAM, SuperDrive, 60GB HD)
She brings it home every night and it's her primary computer, but she lets me play with it. :)

Even though I've been a PC guy since age 12 (14 years ago), I quickly grew to love that sleek AlBook and its interface (still runnning Jag) I use it more than my hulking, fan-happy Alienware tower, just because the Mac's so convenient to sit anywhere in the house and surf the web, Macstumble around the neighborhood ;) play a game, whatever. I love being able to sleep it, and wake it up right away with no lag in the Airport connection. I like the way it automatically unzip..er..unstuffs downloads and puts them where you can find them without dialog boxes and running another utility manually. While I'm still getting used to the iLife apps, I appreciate their simplicity and am looking forward to editing my first DV movie with iMovie and burning with iDVD.

I've manged to get a couple kernel panics, but it was probably my own fault. Still bugs me, though..

I've been to the Apple store in Novi a few times, it's tough to leave that store without one of those 23" HD displays or an iPod... (sigh). I saw a guy there demo-ing Expose in Panther and it made a lot of sense. Fast user switching is fast, yet cool at the same time..

It sounds so cliche, but I used to think Macs were for tree huggers and people who couldn't be bothered to learn 'real' computers, but I've changed my thinking. :) You can have power, simplicity and stability, but you'll pay a bit more for it. I also used to think there wasn't any software or games for the Mac. But now there's Office, sweet web browsers, Quicken, Unreal Tourney.. What else do I need? Yeah, why not buy that G5??

13 years ago I was finishing up my course work in computer science and sent out my resume to prospective employers. On that resume, I said that I was interested in developing PC software for Unix, Windows and/or OS/2. Well, a software company hired me, and plunked me down in front of a Mac. Except for a short stint in the mid 90's working on the Windows version of our product, I've been working on Macs ever since.

I currently own two Macs (well, my daughter thinks that one of them is hers): a 400 MHz G4 TiBook and a 1.25 GHz G4 "You can call me Al"-Book. Both run OS X (10.2.8 and 10.3 respectively).

Aside from Macs, I'm interested in network security and computer forensics. Aside from computers, I'm interested in sailing and music.

It all started for me in 1987 while teaching at a local Community College. I remember using some form of IBM computer that saved data on a 5 1/2 floppy disc. It must have been DOS because I remember typing all commands to it and seeing it crash many times.
Then nothing until 1994 at which time I purchased my first Mac TV!
Surfin' the net with AOL 2.0 at 14.4 kbps.
It took soooooooooo long just to obtain an email that my internet day's ended until August of 1998 at which time I purchased an iMac 233Mhz. which by the way is still running strong!
I have been through every Mac OS since 7.0
My AOL day's are over and now I have 5 Mac's networked together and this is all just a hobby to me.

I've been a Mac fan for about 3yrs now (seems like forever). My Aunt gave Me a Performa 630cd. I hated that thing @ first! I didn't even have a web-browser or "dialer" for it. OS 7.5 didn't come with that stuff! I had a hell of a time to get that 33mhz Mac online! I did though, and after learning the ins and outs of that 33mhz Mac and OS 7.5 , I was a true-blue Mac Maniac! I just loved the community of Mac users, I found all over the web.
Now I've returned the favor. I gave My 6500/250 to her (My Aunt), thus reducing My current Mac collection to 3. The Performa 630 cd that isn't and never will be for sale! A Mac SE I call "Angel Dust" (It's sweet as an Angel, and old as dust!) I got that thing online too! What a blast! It can talk too! 8mhz miracle! And the current workhorse, a Beige G3 MT 266, overclocked to 333mhz, running X.2.4 (Jag) as of today! OS X is a whole new world to learn, and it's a thing of beauty!

acadiel : Yeah, now only if I can get a decent Amiga emulator. The two out there (on emulation.net) are very buggy and lack features. I'd hate to say, but the *doze version is much better. Hopefully, some development will take place on it.....

I've got my old A1200 hard drive images on my hard disk, and the OS X emulators out there either refuse to run them, or just plain crash.

I'm an Amiga user that took a 6 year hiatus into the PC world. I finally saw the light and am now using a PowerMac G4 1.25Ghz with 80GB HD and 512MB RAM. I bought the entire thing in July. (Of course, I still have my 9-month-old Toshiba laptop around because its paid for... but got rid of my Dell desktop.)

I primarily moved to the Mac because of its Unix underpinnings and because its so darn easy to use.. (not to mention cool looking). The iPod I got at time of purchase (July) also rocks...

I think that this system will give me plenty of years of good service.....
Now to find some good educational stuff for the kids......

(With the big takeover, I would've been under even more stress and probably wouldn't have been there much longer anyway.)

I had a apple ][e ( still got it ) that i ran a bbs on. Using a novation apple cat modem..2 floppys , a cider 10 mb hdd and running pro dos. Heh. I have a classic (?) imac...blue color,450 mhz, with around 600+ mbs of ram,40 gig hdd,external fire wire drive ( around 20 gigs ) running osx. When I get home from work...other than checking my email i avoid computers like the plauge.

gruau : I'm Gruau, and I'm the designed Mac tech in a computer shop (even if 98% of my work is with PCs).

I first got in touch with Macs in a summer camp back in high school, but that was really far from love... It was at the College that I got more open-minded and learned to like them.

I currently own:
•1 Mac Classic II (that I left at home for my mother)
•2 Mac Plus (I have screen problems with both, only 1 will probably survive and the other will become a Macquarium for the fishies at work)
•1 PowerBook G3-233 Rev.2 (My first laptop, I plan to use it both at home and at work).
•1 Athlon 1.4GHz (Was my main computer, will soon fall to game and A/V player)

Schmackdown : Hello. I'm Jeff. I had an Atari 800 growing up(still do, play M.U.L.E. with some friends every Wednesday night) b/c I was more into games than programming/productivity as a kid. And everyone knows the 800 beat the snot out of the ][e/c for fast gaming. If only I could have had that extra 16k for Mission Impossible... I was, however, the Brick Out champion of 5th grade on some unidentified Apple, and played quite a bit of Wizardry and Summer Games on a ][c.

Took a divergence to PCs through college, but worked in a computer lab for three years that supported a split PC/Mac lab(Plus, IIsi, Quadra, 6100/60). An early beta of win95(21 floppies) set the refresh rate for my el-cheapo 14" monitor too high and shorted it out. Solution? $50 Dual-floppy Mac SE from a friend that was tired of corrupt disks. Dropped in a 40mb hard drive, maxed it at 4mb, and wrote my History thesis. I've been interested in Macs ever since, simply because they get the job done- I was able to use that SE for everything I needed at the time(the Internet was basically FTP and text-based email) and after graduation as well. I had a discarded Plus in there somewhere, but it tanked in shipping and ended up someone's macquarium.

Got a job supporting PCs after college here in Chicago and bought an SE/30 to tinker with. Died before its time, but maybe I just need to give it some attention. I'd always been impressed with the Cube, and after one night of particular torment by my two Shuttle 41's(2k/redhat 8) at home droning on and on, I decided I'd pick one up to get some quiet and tinker with OSX. I'd really like to consolidate my workstation and internet server into one machine, and I don't see why X couldn't do that.

So my primary machine at home is now a 450mhz Cube with a 120/8 Maxtor(very nice drive so far) and 1.5Gb memory running 10.1.5. I'll upgrade to a 2MX when 1.3 arrives and I find the time to build a proper bracket and oversized heatsink for the Asus board I bought. Got a great deal on the Cube- $700 stock, but with all original packing materials and that little anti-scratch packing plastic still on the Cube itself. Right now it's like a new pair of sneakers you know you're going to scuff eventually but are taking extremely good care of until then.

eppler : I started on Mac's quite a while ago, my guess is '93. It was a Mac Plus maxed out with 4MB of RAM, and an External Zero Footprint 40MB SCSI drive (remember those?). I upgraded that computer eventually with one of the '030 16MHz upgrade kits that were being sold at the time. I don't have the computer anymore, in fact I don't even own my own Mac anymore (!!!) but I do work for a school district, and they provide me with what I need. Right now I've got a PowerBook G4 667MHz, with 512MB RAM, running OS X 10.2.6.

Anyway, just wanted to say hello - I've been contributing for the last couple of days already, and decided to post my 'intro' here.

Lost touch with the mac world around about '96, when i saw less macs (68k AV jobbies) and more clone PCs at the school, then in HS('98) it was all Dell/Compaq, all the time. Except the media room, which was rev 1 iMacs to start with, then he got a bunch of iMac DVs. He also owned a Pismo with virtual PC, which was fun for freaking out people with :) I hear he finally got a new iMac and a new PB for himself.
At home, it's a 386, then a 133, then a 666 P3, then the 133 died and was rebuilt with a 233, then we moved.

Anyway.

I move to the US, and we pretty much have to buy a Dell, as my family knows not the Way Of Apple. So we slosh through the crapness that is Windows XP (actually I found it a refreshing change from ME on a 233) until my birthday rolls around.

I got an iMac 15" FP. I love it. It is my first personal computer.
I'd used the new high school's iMacs with 10.1 on them but this was a Jaguar beast, not to be lightly reckoned with, and much fun has been had since.

I'm Cail Young, I'm an aspiring sound engineer, and I'm hooked on Mac.

Names Bill and I finally got around to making a post after nearly a year. Been a Macuser for about 10 years.
Got some old Mac's (Love 'em) and use both 'X' and 'Classic'. Qualifier: Never on the same machine unless I have more than 1 HD.

I'm from Texas and proud of it. So here I am, don't know if I did this the proper way or not, but I'm still learnin'. Well I'll post this now and see if I attract any gunfire. :D

i have used apple computers since the IIE and IIGS back in elementary school. (i forget how old i am sometimes!) I have used macs forever and even figured out a way to disble "at ease" back in the day (disabled extensions with shift key, i thought i was a genius)

i have only owned one mac up to this point. my all time favorite computer my se/30 loaded out with 4MB of RAM and a 20MB HDD and a HD! floopy drive.

since then i have been nursing a PC (what fun) and it wasn't so bad. finally space restraints in dorm rooms plus an unquenchable desire to run OS X drove me to buy a g4 cube. it gets here on thurs and i wet my pants every time i think about it.

i like all computers though, they are just fun!

I've been a Mac user for 7 years. Started out with a Performa 6205CD with only 8MB RAM (eventually upgraded to the max of 64MB) and a 1GB hard drive.

Currently, I'm using an iBook (icebook) and a beige G3, that I upgraded myself. :)

RickNY : Well, I never introduced myself either... I'm Rick.. I've been known to post mostly in the Optimum Online forum, but also venture into the Microsoft Help, and Hardware forums at times here.. I made the switch to the Mac about 2 weeks ago when I purchased a PowerMac G4 Dual 1.4.. For the past two weeks I have been moving as much stuff off of my home PC as possible and finding OSX apps to do similar tasks.. My X10 system used to run off the PC 24x7 -- Now Indigo takes care of that on the Mac.. I do admit to one thing -- I have great admiration for the PC platform -- for without it, I would have no job security.. I am a LAN administrator for a Windows NT domain consisting of about 300 PCs.. As Im sure many others have had to do, yes, I do have Virtual PC on my PowerMac running XP Pro -- But only because of the apps that I need that there are absolutely no Mac based substitutes for (e.g Garmin Mapsource for my GPS). So far -- I've only come across one program that I absolutely must use on my PC itself (which has been powered off for about a week now!) -- And that is the Philips NeoEdit program I use to program my Pronto Neo remote control -- I just simply cannot get it to communicate via VPC and a USB/Serial converter.. Good thing I only use the thing about once every 6 months!

Anyway, not meaning to go into a rant here, but I am looking forward to my 'learning curve'.. I'm starting to realize one thing -- For those people that have always had Macs -- I guess the learning curve is small.. But when you use a PC for so long, and your job consists of troubleshooting them all day long, its hard to get used to the simplicity and common sense of the way the Mac is structured (Uninstall a program? Just drag it to the trash -- HUH?)... I think you all get the picture..

my first mac was a iicx. bought that used w/ 20mb ram 2 hard drives total of like 500mb , apple one scanner, apple lazer writer, 13" RGB monitor, all disks and manuals and a desk stretching 7' span .. all for $330 .. what a deal .. since then its mac here and mac there ..
mabee one day ill have a mac that can really support osX haha yea, i might like some sound ..

I used Macs since grade school and my first Mac was the LC (complete with OS 7 disks and color monitor). I still have the LC but without ethernet, I currently have no use for it. Our next Mac was a PowerMac 7600 with a 20" Acer monitor. My brother got it as a high school graduation gift from my folks. That computer became too "slow" and my parents bought my brother a B/W G3 desktop with matching monitor. I was given the 7600 for my college use.

The 7600 became too "slow" for me around my junior year of college so I bought my boyfriend's PB G3 (so he could have the cash for the original Ti G4). I had originally preorded the PB G4 but didn't have the bucks to pay off my credit card.

When I graduated, I gave my parents $2000 for the B/W G3 set and my brother got himself a Dell workstation. Currently, I no longer own the matching monitor because my brother's Acer monitor blew a fuse and he came by "borrow" it. I'm currently looking into getting a 17" LCD.

Recently, I promised to give my PB G3 to my high school intern when he goes off to Princeton in Aug. He's a PC user but has learned to appreciate Macs since working for me. He's a good kid and I made him promise to give it back if he decides to upgrade to something faster. I just hope I saved up enough money to replace it with the 17" PB before then.

I have also had many Macs at work, 7100, iMac 233, iMac 333, iBook 300, iBook 500, G4/733. I manage technology for a school district here in the Chicago area. I do their network management, website, email, anything higher end. I manage about 800 Macs in varying models from 5200/75's to DP867's.

wendo : i've never formally introduced myself either, so here goes. the first computer i convinced my parents to buy was a performa 578. it took me years to get them to buy one, they thought computers were a waste of money because as soon as you got it, it was out of date. i still hold that over their heads to this day. i had to switch to a pc in college to get anything done, but then scored a great job as a UNIX admin out of school. i dumped windows and began using linux at home, and when OS X came out, i started salivating for a new mac. saved up some and finally got a G4 dual 867 with a 17" flat panel and haven't looked back. i still run a redhat 7.2 web and ssh server, but whenever i'm home, i'm on the mac. i absolutely love it. hopefully, a 17" pb is somewhere in my future :)

I've been a Mac user off and on for as long as I can remember, but only when I could find one to use, which was either at university or at an enlightened friend's house. ;-) I finally bought my own Mac after I got a job in tech support, and saw the brilliance of OS X! I had to have a Mac! The new iMac came out, and that's what I've got now. I got it last April, so it's a year old, Happy Birthday Baby! I still use PCs for work, and that's it! I do have two other Macs, but they are up in the attic right now. A friend gave them to me after I got my iMac. One is a MacIntosh Classic II, and the other is an LC 475. They both still work, but I don't have the space for them in my room yet.
I feel like part of a special group now. Thanks!:-)

My day job involves managing about 200+ Sun & HP servers, everything ranging from desktop-class Ultra 5's through Enterprise 10000's (64 CPU, 64GB RAM) and everything inbetween.

My workstation at home was a Linux box many moons ago, and right around '99ish or so, I felt Linux was getting to be a mess and so I jumped feet-first into having a Sun box at home... It's reliable as can be, and nice and all, but well, not that much fun.

Then, in March 2001, magic happened. My parents were struggling with their Winders PC (what else is new?) and I happened to catch wind of Apple's new program called iTunes....

Well, iTunes looked like EXACTLY what my Dad would need to do what he wanted (organize MP3's and cut CD's, easily.

So I ordered a PowerMac G4/466 with all the trimmings. Pro speakers, SCSI board, you name it, I ordered it. Oh, and that Mac OS X thing looks interesting too. I figured my parental units would use OS 9, and I'd boot OS X when I felt like playing around.

Well, the machine arrived 2 weeks before OS X was released. Let me tell you, it wasn't easy to wait ... the more I read, the more I wanted to play.

And then it came. Wow. I mean, WOW. WOW! Finally! A Unix with a nice front end. You mean I can run Word, Excel, a nice web browser *AND* have a shell prompt?

AND it's stable? Just wow.

I went on the hunt for another Mac.... Problem is, my parents were already in love with the Power Mac, and I couldn't rip it away from them.... so while they were happy in OS9 land, I was stuck on my Sun box still.... until about 6 months later, when a friend of mine made me an offer...

A friend of his worked for a dot-bomb company in NYC that was going out of business, and they were liquidating everything. I picked up a B&W G3/350 for $300.

Nice. Back in the OSX business. I ended up using that machine for about a month, then finally swapping it with my parents -- I took back my G4, and they got the G3, which, quite frankly, in OS9 was plenty fast.

So here we are today, I've still got the G4/466 (with a Sonnet 1GHz chip in it now), my parents still have the B&W G3/350 (with a Sonnet G4/500 chip in it), and I've converted the entire team at my job to Macs...

First we got the whole team iBooks (500mhz). They were nice, but well, underpowered. So then we all got PowerBooks (G4/800).... They're fantastic machines....

And I just ordered my newest powerbook (a 15" G4/1ghz)... I finally shut off my Sun box at work and just use the PowerBook now, hooked up to a Sun 24" LCD..... what a sweet setup. :)

Yikes, I'm long-winded, but I thought I'd give you my Apple history ..... it can get a _lot_ more boring than this, I promise!

I am a PC User, who is getting an 867 MhZ PowerBook soon. I work on many types of Macs at my school with our computer tech. I am pretty knowligable with the Classic OSes, but be prepared I will ask dumb questions about OS X. Hopefully, I will have 4 Dual 1.25 GhZ Power Mac's by this time next year!

Hi, I'm Mike and my first Mac was a LC 575 back in 1994 running like Mac OS -3 and Windows is comparable to a satanic demon that has arrived from the blackest pits of hell to rape everyone. Unix based Mac = hunk of garlic.

I currently have a fleet of Macs. Last count a total of 60 or so G4 and G3 tower macs. OS 9 is not that great compared to OS X are under my domain. The only thing I have to do to them is clean the monitors, keyboard, and the crappy hockpuck mice. That's it..

the windows labs on the other hand...

I recently found this site as I shopped for DSL providers.

I've been plugging away at Apple's and Mac's since I was slightly taller than a grasshopper. Ah, the day's of Apple II and endless nights of Wizardry.

Anyhow, I've continued my passion for macs to the present. While I work on PC's by day, I return home to my some-what newly purchased Duel-gig Mac. I'm have lots of fun learning OS X and all its intricacies.

I haven't touched an Apple since 1992, but I'm being given an iBook to use in my new job (online support for Verizon DSL), and don't have the first clue on how to use it but I've been told repeatedly that this is the best place to go to for any help. So once I get my computer I'm sure I'll be back often plaguing people with questions :)

I'm in the typesetting business and have been using Macs for the last 10 years or so.

I've lurked here for the last year or so, and thought I'd best sign-up (I also had a problem which I created a new post about :( )

Just have a lowly G4 400mhz with 896 ram. OS 10.1.5 and 9.2.2 and depending on my over-time workload I probably use 9.2.2 more than OS X.

I've used a TiBook 800 a couple of weeks ago and loved it.

I've used this site quite a bit over the last year, mostly for tweaking my speed.

I've been using Macs since 1987--oh my god, 15 years! I never thought about that before. Well, hey, I guess 15 years proves I'm kinda old, but I'm still young enough to be my family's Mac guru. (Though I'm really no guru at all.) Anyway, I'm hoping to think of clever questions to ask here and in "Wireless Networking."

Have been an ardent Mac fan since the dark days of the mid 90s (thanks, Gil), currently work on a G4 800 Quicksilver, and have a B+W 350 sitting at home alongside my wife's iMac 600 SE. We both love the Mac platform, and the Mac OS! (although, I do also own a Duron...strictily for gaming tho :)

murph007 : I bought the older G4 Dual 1 gig w the 17" Apple Display (sweet) at CompUSA the day the new ones came out... ($800 price drop overnight). I love my PC's but the movie editing seems to be a lot easier on the Mac platform. I have always been led to believe the graphics editing is superior on Mac's so it wasn't surprised by this.

Overall I am pleased with my purchase... I won't be selling any of my PC's, I just consider it another addition to the family. The $19.95 Jag upgrade arrived yesterday and the install appears to have went flawlessly.

Time to dig in and find out how/what Mac's are all about!

My kids all have PCs and I seldom use them as I find them to be more complicated than Macs. I stopped at one of my kid's house this morning to scan something into his computer and send to myself as an attachment to an e-mail.

It is confusing when compared to the Mac OS 8.6 which does all I need.

Modelamac is for my '30 Model A Ford Rumbleseat Roadster Deluxe and my Mac. My 3-week-old Quicksilver is now my Mac. I'm giving my PwrCtr 150 (G3 500) to my Mother (85 yrs) for word-processing and email. My first computer was an Apple ][e, which I still have. It's very dusty!

Iguard2 : I now have replaced my iMac 350 with a iBook 600 and added

My name is Dogs - only kidding, it's Jon really. It's English slang for excellent in case you where wondering. I found ATM while sorting out my DSL woes last year.It's been great for info, especially changing over from 9 - OSX

I'm on my 4th Mac (PB800 DVI), my old PB will be going on Ebay soon, probably as parts as it seems to be more valueble in bits (a G3 1400c)

I've never owned a PC. When I moved to the states, my wife got our first Mac and I was hooked.

When I'm not checking out ATM , I'm a professional photographer ( no Digital camera yet , but I've almost paid for one with the amount I've rented a D1X this year)

BTW I can now pick up 4 other wireless networks in my apartment. There was only one other a few weeks ago when I got my new PB.

I've been using Macs regularly since, oh, 1989 or so. I came from an Apple II background (though my first box was a TRS-80 Model I! At least I had a disk drive), and somehow resisted the temptation to get a //gs instead. There were plenty of Macs for me to use in college (I ran a large Mac lab on campus by 1990 - I was a quick study!), but didn't get my own until 1993 when I very wisely chose a closeout IIci over the then-brand new IIvx.

After upgrading the IIci to death (Daystar Turbo040 and the whole nine yards), I moved up to an 8500/120 in 1996. After upgrading that to death (up to a G3/400), I gave it to my sister and bought a G4/400 (Gigabit ethernet) in 2000.

I also had an eMate 300 for a couple of years, and now that's also in my sister's possession. My iBook/500 is serving my portable needs quite well, thanks.

Oh, and I picked up a Laserwriter 16/600PS for about $140 on eBay a few months ago, completing the Apple picture.

I plan on upgrading my current G4 some more, most likely adding a Sonnet 800MHz or 1GHz. I've already got a gig of RAM, a WD 80JB (an amazingly fast drive), and a Radeon AGP. I don't plan on buying a new tower until 2003 sometime, when it becomes more clear what direction Apple will go in for CPUs.

Paladin : Yo, I'm Mactroll, a.k.a. Ryan Fraley, a longtime PC user that has an open mind about Apple. I am using Mac OS X at school (SIU-Carbondale), and that experience has persuaded me to make the switch. In late September when the Apple Store at West County mall in St. Louis opens, I will be waiting in line to get a new 17" widescreen iMac.

Current PC:
400 mhz Compaq Presario (really, it did not give me that many problems other than the time the video card blew out. Most of the problems were software related. ) I'm surprised it lasted that long. Not bad, for a PC.

My name is Mike. I am unfortunately a PC user(looking for OS X skins and related every day.) I know alot more about Apple than the average PC(well, x86)user. I plan on buying an iBook + iPod(I'm definetely gonna wait for the G4 iBook) sometime before December 2002. For the last 4 months, I had a Blue and White 350 mhz PowerMac G3, but I do not have it anymore for reasons ;) .

Iguard2 : I've been addicted to Mac's since 1996 when I had a LC and then
bought a PM6290, then a PM6400. I went back to Classic Mac for
awhile after selling my 6400(I needed money). I got several IIci's
free from the MIS dept. at work because they upgraded to G3's.
Now I've got a Summer 2000 Indigo 350 iMac with 384mb of
RAM and running OS X.1.5.

At home, I have a Mac G4 dual processor 450 MHZ 512 GB RAM with all the usual crap: zip, jaz, cd burner, scanner, printer... and I have an indigo iBook I bought for school (I am returning to CSU Long Beach to get my Masters degree--and wouldn't do it on a WinBlows machine. I was glad to see that CSULB supports Macs!

At work, I use a Mac as well--in fact, I wouldn't work anyplace that forced a pc on me. Its on of the reasons I left Ernst & Young several years ago! Doing graphics on a pc is an experience akin to having your nails pulled out one by one.

I am an MCSE and CCNA tech and will be getting my Apple cert shortly. I do have to say that OS X is light years ahead of WinXP Pro and the new finder with column view simply rocks. Go NeXT, er I mean..Go Apple!

Stacy : I'm a working editorial/news photographer and I guess my biggest claim to fame is I once photographed Bill Gates at the Brooklyn Public Library. Gates' people had already said we couldn't use flash, but I was shooting slow transparency film and certainly didn't want to leave without a photo of him. We were all squatting around him in a semi circle but, at the end, I stood up and started firing away. Gates turned towards me, gave me a strange smile, and let me get the photos. I guess he must have noticed the Apple logo on my battery pack.

So here's my Mac life story....

Back when I was at Hunter back in the early eighties I walked into the college library one day and discovered they had computerized it. I had no idea how to find anything so I decided it was time to take a class. I wound up doing a year of Computer Graphics on a PC and bought an Atari for home use. Then around 1987 I got a job as staff photographer for a group of weekly community newspapers. They were putting out three papers a week on a bunch of Mac Pluses networked together with PhoneNet -- essentially telephone lines that went into the serial ports. Not long after that, I traded in my Atari for a Mac Plus with a whole Megabyte of Ram and a 20 mb hard drive.

I didn't start doing any kind of digital photography until around 1995, which was maybe six months after we got a Quardra 630. I bought a Nikon Coolscan so I could do web pages but the next thing I knew I was shooting and scanning for one of the local daily papers. Within first month or so, I had made enough just with the scanner to pay for it and a new PowerBook 190.

The PowerBook was a lemon. The price dropped $500 about a month after I bought it, and Apple issued a recall a few weeks later. It went back to Apple more times than I could count so, when they said it was time to replace the logic board, a second time, I decided to get a G3 PowerBook instead.. It was the last of the SCSI PowerBooks but it's been a great computer and it's never gone back to Apple.

That was probably around the first time I heard about DSL. I had no idea what it was but I knew I wanted it so I could put a database of images on the web and email photos to clients. So I picked up an old PowerMac 8100 on Ebay and used that for the server. The server lasted till this May when I finally decided to replace it with the G4 800.... and that's pretty much the story.

The old Mac Plus is probably sitting in the attic of my son's ex-girlfriend's house. The Quadra is at my son's house. The PowerBook 190 is sitting in a corner of the bedroom and the 8100 has gone to Mac Heaven.

I was a member of Dan's DDdial (was it number 17?) first before deciding to start my own (Dan was too far to call, not that it was CHEAPER starting my own..).. I think I was ddial 44 or 41 or 42.. raripple : Hi all. Rich here. Been lurking in the shadows of ATM for some time. Just thought I'd speak up.

My first exposure to the Mac OS was on an Atari 1040ST using a Specter GCR Mac Emulator. It used actual Mac Plus ROMS and had a hardware interface that allowed you to read and write Mac OS floppies. Surprisingly enough, it worked very well.

In '94 I upgraded to a new Quadra 660. Nice machine, still have it. Still works well.

A couple years later, I purchased a used Performa 6115 and threw in a Newer Technologies 240MHz G3 card and a 40X CD to boost performance. I used the hell out of it and never had a single compatibility issue. Newer made nice hardware.

I'd still be using the 6115 everyday if I hadn't gotten a great deal on my current system, a used G4 400 (PCI).

I love the Mac. I'm forced to use windows machines at work, but you'll never see one at my home.

I use PCs and Macs, and I'm happy with both. I'm a poor, cheap bastard, and can't afford a 'complete' new computer, so I am one of the hordes of PC 'upgraders', who upgrades a piece at a time. If I had $1900 lying around, I'd pick up a new iMac in an instant. If I had $5000 lying around, I'd get a Dual 1GHz with an HD Display. If I had more than $5000, I'd pick up the Mac, then use the rest to upgrade my PC. When I have LESS than $1000, I upgrade my PC.

For the record, I've been using Apple computers since 1981, PCs since 1986, Macintoshes since 1989. (With an occasional Amiga thrown in for good measure.) I currently own 5 'PC's, consisting of my main PC (1.467GHz Athlon-based, for monetary reasons, I'd actually rather have a Pentium 4. It's running XP;) my server (ancient Pentium II running Linux;) my notebook (The original Sony 'PictureBook', running XP;) my fiance's PC, and her son's PC. (Pentium 3 and Pentium MMX.)

On the Mac side, my 'real' Macs are a Rev.B iMac running OS X, a PM7300/200 running 9.0.4 (I'm about to try running X on it,) and a PM8500/180AV that I still use for video editing (Again, I'm going to try to get X on it, and see if I can get it to use the AV functionality;) and a PowerBook 1400cs upgraded to a G3/233 (still only 48MB of RAM, though.)

I also collect old Macs, and currently have: Plus, SE, SE/30, Classic, Colour Classic II, LC, LC III, IIci, IIfx, IIsi, Quadra700, Quadra 660AV, Centris 650, Quadra 610, PM6100 DOS Compatible, PM7200, and three PowerBook 5300s (different model levels.)

Yes, I'm perfectly happy to run OS X and Windows XP. I like the programs on OS X better, and if I had a reasonably new (i.e., fast) Mac, I'm sure OS X would win hands-down. But for now, XP on my PC is my main OS.

i have been using macs my entire life. some people in school found about my computing prefrence and treated me weirdly for a day or so, and they wanted to know why, so i gave the normal reasons. my school is full of pc biggots. i have given so many of them the (or two) "swear" finger(s) because of what they say. i am a dedicated mac user. i can deal with a few peecees, but overall i hate them. i dont hate the m$ mac division, i use office x and ie often, but their windoze division sucks.

Actually, I've been an Apple user since I can remember (well at least, since I've started using computers). I started out with an Apple // and then went to a Franklin Ace (okay, so this isn't REALLY Apple, but it's part of the history, so I'm compelled to add it).. I finally went to an Apple //e (yeah, lowercase). Whilst on the old Apple OS, I ran a BBS, "The Attic" and also what was known as a ddial (diversi-dial), "Attic Static". The diversi-dial was kind of cool in that it used seven internal modems (started with AppleCats I believe and then some cheaper brand) to allow people to dial in and chat. Now, keep in mind this was way before the Internet was readily available and the only alternatives were services such as "PC Link" (I think that's what it's called) and "CompuServe", so diversi-dial was a big deal..

When I had my first encounter with a Mac, I was entranced.. I thought it was great that everything was graphical (my opinion has since change, I do like the graphical, but I also cherish the command line, which makes OS X so much more in my eyes).. This first encounter was at a friends house..

I didn't get my First Mac until college.. It was an SE/30.. Yes, without color.. The model just before the color ones became available at Drexel (lucky me).. Since then I've gone through a number of Macs (desktops and laptops).. Some PowerComputing machines..

I currently own a Ti667 (my baby) and an older Desktop G4.. I'm waiting to see what might come at July's expo (since it's been a WHILE since anything major has happened to the desktop).. Who knows, maybe I'll be the father of a proud new desktop..

a Centris 610 in 1993,
a 7500/100 in 1996 (which now has a G3/400 daughtercard)
and a Cube in 1999.

I still have all of those, as well as
a Plus,
an LC,
a PowerBook 145B,
a 6400/200,
and an iBook that my wife lets me use occasionally.

I also have a Newton, that I still use daily.

At work I play with Auspex file servers, using NT, linux, IRIX, Solaris and whatever else we need to test with, so I know how the dark side lives.

bjf123 : I've just started reading this forum in the last few days. I'm currently running an HP PC (can I say that here? ;)), but I'm thinking of making the switch to a Mac with my next purchase. I'm getting really tired of Microsoft (can I say that here? ;)) adding more and more to the bloatware they call Windows (can I say that here? ;)). I'm looking for an OS that's just that, an OS and not an all inclusive collection of stuff. I'll add what I want to my system, not what Bill Gates thinks I should have.

Hope you all don't mind if I lurk around here, and maybe ask a question now and then.

My first mac was my family's Mac Plus, which not resides in my bedroom closet. The family went to a IIvx, a Color Classic, a Perf 6300 and 1 or 2 others. Since I've been working in the computer retail industry 10 years now, I've bought a Powerbook 1400cs, a 6100/60av, 23 imacs, and an old Powerbook 100 from a guy I knew who used to be a field rep for Apple. I work on a pc all day, and have to sell them too, but the favorite part of my job is selling the Mac systems.

Other than that great piece of machinery that still works after all these years, I have owned LC's/Quadras//Performas/PowerMac 9k's/iMac/PowerMac G3 (beige)/and my current system, a Powermac G4 450 DP.I am 27, and I am a Mac Addict with the occasional lapse in judgement when I must use a PC. Thumb me baby.

P.S. All of my Macs except the beige G3 still work, but have found new homes since they matured and moved out.

BrushedTooth : Well lets see.......about me, my name is Jason I am 21, and currently attending The Univeristy of Toledo majoring in Computer Science & Engineering, and also Electrical Engineering(atleast soon to be, a long stroy :(). When I was about 4 when I used my first computer an old Mac, I dont remember the model, it was 1984 if that helps. I later got into using PC as my parents both got one. I built my first PC at the ripe age of 14, and have built(assembled) many since.

Since late 2001 I have been using Linux, and most recently Gentoo Linux, running KDE 3.0.1. My interest in Linux led me to my interest in Mac's and well you all know what happens when you become interested in Mac's and OS X :) I sold my PC, and got a Power Mac G4 933Mhz Tower, and have been using it for a couple weeks now, w/ my free FireFly 5GB Firewire HD. I am also running RC5, thanks to Crunching Cows, actually quite a bit since I work odd hours, and like my rest ;)

iTunes is great, and I just got my copy of Office V. X today for $10 :) Once I pay off my Power Mac I am going to get one of those nice Studio Displays, maybe the 21", or by then a 23".

I've only been here a week or so now, since getting help from ya'll setting up my Netgear and Bellsouth DSL. I currently have a Ti 550 which I love. But lately I've been thinking of taking out an Apple loan for a new G4 and LCD. My video work is really screaming for a new machine and a Superdrive.....ok....really I'm the one that wants it, but it couldn't hurt right? Running FCP 3 under OS X is ok, but I think that a faster machine would REALLY help out.
ANYWAY.......just signing in to say hey!

P.S. Any opinions on the Apple loans? Anyone have experience with them? i just don't have he 3-4 grand right now.

HotFries : I'm a fun chic known here as "HotFries" and I'm passionate about IT and music. They are both battling for the top spot in my life. I have 6 years of IT consulting experience in PC Desktop & Networking technical support. Consulting has allowed me the opportunity to work at various companies from the Midwest to the Southeast. I've even independently consulted. Btw, I still love Novell NetWare and always will. I had fun supporting it at client sites so don't talk to me about NT/2000 servers! I'm itching to play with NetWare 6 Beta on an old server soon that I picked up. Sorry to digress, bad habit. :D

Since I haven't done hands on support in awhile, I've gotten a bit rusty so I'm constantly reading, asking questions and researching things to get back up to speed. I enjoy attending all types of seminars, especially those that are IT, music and electronics-related. I'm looking forward to another fun year at Networld+Interop this September, especially since Comdex will be a part of it. :)

I'm on ATM to lurk and learn but also help out when I can. I had a Mac IIvx many years ago and all I remember using on it was eWorld! It was fun while it lasted, I ended up selling it and bought an IBM Aptiva PC. I wished I had kept it to convert my vinyl to digital audio since I'm a "bedroom" vinyl DJ. Perhaps I'll pick up an old useful Mac for that purpose only and ask you nice people here on how to set it up. I've forgotten alot of the old Mac stuff. Nevertheless, the more I brush up, the more it's coming back. However, OS X is a new thang!

I'm planning to bring a new Mac & Cinema display into my life hopefully by years end, as OS X has definitely piqued my curiosity and I want in. I also wouldn't mind teaching new Mac owners OS X but of course I have to first know it inside and out.

My name is Dylan, and I've been using apple computers since the LCII. (ahhh, what joy it was to run Mac OS 6, or was it 7, on 4MB of RAM). I now have the following:

PowerMac G4 400 AGP (early model, sawtooth)
PowerMacintosh 9500/180 MP
Performa 6360/160
Ti Powerbook G4/667 (model JUST before the combo drive :()
iMac 233 Rev B

I use OS X, 9, 8.6, BeOS, and a little Linux (waiting for YDL 2.3 to come out)

I have gone to the previous 4 MacWorlds (this will be my 5th) in NY. I also have about 50-70 apple posters :) (thank you eBay).

I am a Mac guy from way back. I started out with an Atari 800XL in high school in the mid-'80s, but graduated to Macintosh with matriculation at Stanford in 1986. I've been hooked ever since. I have owned:

Classic II '93-'95
Performa (nee LC) 575CD
Performa 6110 (nee PM 6100/60)
Beige G3/266 (current home machine, upgraded to G3/468 MHz)
Lombard 333 (current office machine, upgraded to G4/500)
iBook 300 (wife's machine)
iMac G3/266 (current office machine, thinking of upgrading to new iMac)
Built my own WinAMD 1Ghz PC, which mainly sits in the corner and gathers dust, but works great when I choose to use it

I am a neurologist by trade and run my office totally on Macintosh, using MS Office X for patient reports, Filemaker Pro for OS X/Mobile for Palm to catalog patient visits, and Palm Desktop to carry my patient schedule with me. The "lime" (closer to apple green to me) iMac makes a great conversation piece with patients!

The best thing about using Macs is that I AM I.T.!! I haven't had to hire computer help, well.....ever! My office is even networked, and I did it for the most part myself! If Apple wants to profile current users in ads, they need to pick me!

I don't have a Mac right now, but if I could find a bare-bones one for cheap, I'd jump on it.

I mostly lurk, since I don't have too many Mac experiences to talk about, but that's okay.

I started using Apples in elementary school. We used to play games like Oregon Trail, Odell Lake, BC, etc. I learned how to do some programming in Basic, Graffix, and Logo Logic back then. That was back in the days of the Apple ][e and later the ][gs (had a 3.5" floppy drive).

Later, in 8th grade, I became an assistant to the newspaper editor, and worked on a Mac Performa with OS 7.5. It didn't take long to learn the OS inside-out, and I learned that Macs can indeed crash, but overall work pretty well.

Recently (a year ago already), I used one of the first Titanium Powerbooks, with Wireless LAN at a customer's house. I sat by his pool and configured his Netopia router from there.

My name is Sam, im 15, and i am a Mac and PC User, I like computers of everykind, so neither bothers me much, (except the BSOD) Right now I have three macs, 2 are old, they were my first computers. an LC II and a Performa 6300. But i am giving to a home they will be happy in, Quarex's. I have an original Imac, 233 mhz, with the original blueish color, its a nice little system, i use it for seti and as a second computer, Needs more memory though, a litte sluggish on 32 MB. I would relly like to get a new Emac or Imac. But cant afford it right now, saving up for a Monster Gateway system. maybe next year, i will be around the forum asking stupid questions, so see ya there.

Cornstalkk : G'Day mates! I used to work for a major PC Support/Sales company. I started skinning PC's about a year ago with Stardock apps, creating and converting OSX icons, with a web page dedicated to the skinning of PC's (»www.osxp.net)decided that skinning a PC and changing the icons would never replace the stability and actual functionality of a Mac. I quit my job and got a brand new Flat Panel iMac in March and have been OSX user ever since. Thinking about getting a 2nd Mac and networking them.

Hi, Im Mike, living in Danbury, Connecticut. I just turned 25 on April 13. I grew up in the Queens and Long Island areas of New York. Im sure you all are very familiar with what I do for a living (i.e. Stupid Mac Help Desk Calls of the Week posts), but for those who dont know, I am part of a call center for Pearson, a large publishing/media company. For just over 3 years now I am a proud and active member of Alcoholics Anonymous.

I own a Mac B/W G3, courtesy of donation from the JohnnyLundy I Feel Sorry For You Foundation. I also own a PC desktop that acts as a server, and a Dell laptop (yes, PCs, get over it). Ive owned a computer since I was 6 years old, starting out with a Commodore 64. I pretty much had the 64, and also this major antiquated Zenith "laptop" from the US Government. That puppy had an 8088 processor, a 2 color LCD screen, and was heavy as hell. The thing was built in 1982! However, the shocker was that it had a 1200 baud modem, and I was able to get into my shell acct using a telecom program that was built right into ROM on the board--no OS needed! In 1995 I got a Gateway (which I set fire to twice). The rest is history. Oh yeah, I forgot that I also had a Mac Plus for 6 something years.

Mauricio9 : Been around for a while, but maybe haven't introduced myself... here it goes.

I'm Mauricio, an Economics Ph.D. student, hopefully growing out of it within the next year. First computer was a TI 99-4/A, back in 1983, in Argentina, where I lived until 1998 and where we get all the technology with a two year lag at best. Next was a Lisa II modified to run Mac XL, followed by a Mac 512 expanded and a Mac Plus with a whopping 2.5 MB of ram and a maxed out SCSI chain. Had that for a few years until I took in a Performa 475 and a secondhand 6100/60, which I had to run without the cover and with an extra fan. After moving to Chicago in 1998 I got an original Bondi Blue iMac, which went to computer heaven during a thunderstorm (get those surge protectors!) and I now thrive happily on a G3 400 Mhz ruby iMac, with OS X and 640 MB of ram. Just hoping to become a prof at some school that will give me a fat research account to get that G5 TiBook...

Bryon : Hi everyone, my name is Bryon (long-time lurker, first-time poster).

I sold Burroughs mainframe and mini-computer equipment in the early to mid 80s. Then along came PCs with terminal emulation. I learned CPM, then multiuser CPM, BTOS/CTOS, PC-DOS, and MS-DOS.

I went to pickup a custom cable one day and saw a Mac (512K-E) for the first time. Within 3 months, I went to work for a Mac reseller and stayed for 10 years. In that time, I had implemented hundreds of Appletalk networks with thousands of workstations (Apple IIe, IIgs, and Macs) to businesses and schools throughout the midwest.

I now manage the technology at a small, private PreK-12 school that is 90% mac-based. I also support all my family/friends' technology that I trickle down to them from my technology "investments".

Currently, my personal inventory consists of an G3/266 all-in-one (soon to be replaced with a SuperDrive iMac or tower), iBook466, my wife and daughter's iMac333, Gateway P4/Win2K Pro (see how the other half lives), SnapServer 1000 w/ mirrored 80Gbs (AFP, FTP, HTTP), and HP color laserjet 4500 all 100Mb switched throughout the house with comcast to the outside world.

Brendan : I'm Brendan, and I'm a die-hard Apple fan. Been using Apple computers since I can first remember; starting off in elementary school with Apple II's (II+, IIe, IIc, and a few IIgs') and eventually moving on to the Mac. My family's first home computer was an Apple IIgs, Woz edition. It was loaded for its day; has two 3.5 and 5.25 inch floppy drives, 1.25 megs RAM (woohoo!), Apple 12 inch color display, and ImageWriter II printer. My dad is a teacher, and uses it to this day for AppleWorks (the original, Apple II edition) and GradeBusters gradebook program.

We then got a Performa 6400/200 in 1996. Dad was going to use that for the Mac version of GradeBusters, until he found out his school district was going to charge him for it. He said, "To hell with that. I'll just use the IIgs." So, I was given the 6400, and used it for five years until I got my G4. At the end of its life, the 6400 had a 320 mhz G3 upgrade, maxed RAM (136 megs, I think), 10/100 Ethernet, and an ATI Nexus 128 video card.

I now have a PowerMac G4, dual 533, with 1.25 gigs RAM, GeForce3 graphics, two 7200 rpm hard disks- one stock 40 gig and one 120 gig for my studio, and a 24 bit analog/MIDI/digital audio input card.

My next purchase will be the G5 PowerBook. :D

My computer daze started in high school with a TRS-80.
Later, in college, a roommate had one of the first IBM portables.
Then, another roommate had an apple II.
I graduated, went into the working world, used both Macs and PC's.
My first PC was a 286.
Then I bought a 486/Pentium/Pentium II - kept upgrading the durn thing to keep up with M$ updates.
Believed the hype - became an NT weenie.
Wanted one of the first "toilet seat" iBooks.
Settled for a Powerbook instead.
Replaced it with a TiBook.
Got X.
Got a G4 dualie.
Threw out PC.
Never looked back.
Amaze people at work with the TiBook, which runs rings around the Dull PCs we use.
X kicks butt.

mkcompu : i have been using macs since before i was in school. first one ever was my dad's powerbook from his business (it had a trackball). i got a preforma 6220 in 3rd grade, powerbook 1400c/166 in 6th grade, IICI and g4/400 in 8th grade, and powerbook g4/667 soon. im n the process of acquiring a color classic too. and yes johnny, im upgrading the g4 to support Quartz Extreme (im going to get a 32 mb radeon or a radeon 8500).

i have all these macs (except for the old powerbook) and a plw NTR. during the summer, i may move them all into the basement. TX, i may crunch RC5 with the rig of oldies.

Cornstalkk : Hello. My name is Rick and I am a recovering Winblows user/Technician. I currectly have had a FP iMac since March and believe I will NEVER go back to Windows. (Although I still work on them which is a given). If it wasn't for this website and the many people with experience here with answers I would probably still be lost trying to CTL+ALT+DEL in every situation I get in.

My addiction started in 1981 with a used Apple ][+ and progressed from there to a ][e, a ][e Enhanced, an Apple III, a Lisa, a Mac 512, a Mac Plus, an LC I, an LC III, an 8100/100AV, an Imac Rev. B, and a Wallstreet Powerbook. Also inhouse I have a Beige G3 MT that belongs to my son.

I will shortly be building a twin Dual 1gig Quicksilver video workstation for a movie I will be working on in the fall of '02.

My addiction is under control, really it is!

The X : Hi everyone I am Andrew I have been using Macs back since the classic days. But currently at work I use a 733 Digital Audio two dual 533 servers and two 533 servers and a 500 MHz Tibook. and I have about 900 other macs that I responsible for. I am the network admin for a high school in my area. But right now between work and school I am trying to learn unix and and teach myself some programming. And since that pretty much has me covered for about 16 hours a day all I do other then that is sleep.....

eakes : I am a retired microwave telecommunications system engineer. Designed and implemented microwave and lightwave communications systems for telcos and private businesses for 30+ years.
My first computer was a HeathKit in 1976. Assembled both computer and monitor. Next was an Apple II+. The first Mac was the 512k 'fat' Mac. Over the years have had a number of different Macs. The latest are two Power Tower Pros, one with a G3 update card and the other with a G4.

Would like to try OS10.x, but X doesn't like either of my two Macs and I have found no compelling reason to upgrade to a new computer. I detest command line computing so the Terminal function is not for me.

I post as Gruyere and like to keep all my usernames as names of cheeses. I name each of my hard drives after a different body fluid. Consistency is the key to remembering all the myriad things that I do.

I am an otolaryngologist/head & neck surgeon and have been using Macintosh since 1984 and Apple since the late 1970's. My first computer was a gigantic box called the Commodore PET (circa 1977)and it was good for BASIC and a cool Star Trek game. In college I used something called a IBM Selectric Typewriter and then a Commodore 64. At this point in time my sister and brother were crunching away on their Apples (and Franklin Ace Apple II clone).

1984 came and I bought Macintosh early on. I bought one for my sister because they were available at my college bookstore. She went on to graduate with a CS degree and program for the Macintosh. She authored one of the most popular Macintosh email programs that most of us have used ad nauseam.

Over the last twenty years I've owned several iterations of Macintosh, and currently at home I have a B/W G3 desktop and a Pismo PowerBook both running OS X. I am trying to hold out for the G5 as my next computer (the B/W is still doing me well).

I first discovered DSLR when I was researching broadband options. I found this forum and after lurking for about six months, discovered that it is one of the most learned Macintosh User Groups out there.

prwood : Hi, I'm Peter, a Perl developer from the Boston area. I got into computers relatively late in the game. My first computer was a Mac LC in 1991. Next was an UMAX SuperMac J700 in August 1997, for high school graduation. Most recently I got a Apple PowerBook G3 "Firewire" in January 2001. The LC is in the basement back in my childhood home in Ohio. The other two I still have - the J700 is now running Mandrake Linux and serves as a server for me and some friends: »woburn.dyndns.org/ . The Pismo I use for my day-to-day stuff. It triple boots Mandrake 8.2/MacOS 9.2/MacOS 10.1.4.

Macs don't really play a part in my day job. I have a Dell/Win98 box on my desk and our web/database servers are Sun boxes running Solaris. That's why I ~~hang out~~ do research on the ~~All Things Macintosh~~ All Things UNIX forum during the day. :-)

In my off-time, I am the website and maillist admin for the MacWoburn user group. I also do some presentations at the group from time to time. I'll be doing a presentation on MacOS X for the Boston Linux & Unix usergroup in August. :-)

zudokieman : I'm a Network Admin for a small company. I am a *nix addict and since OSX is based on the Mach kernel and BSD, I had to try it out. So I bought a G3 powerbook on Ebay and have been enjoying it since. My favorite feature has to be the terminal. My new boss is now forcing me to sell my soul to Billy-Boy and I am not not happy about it.

I started with an Apple][-minus back in 1978 and got my first Mac in February of 1984. Still figuring out OSX, and yes, my beige G3 and 733 G4 towers both run RC5.

MrNo : I got my iBook for about 5-6 months now. It's sluggish with OS X but I like the interface and the whole Mac user concept. I don't run RC5 though I run seti@home

You all make me feel like a newbie...my first mac was a PB 5300. I started out with an Emplant board, which emulated a Quadra 950 in an Amiga (faster, BTW, than an actual Q950)...so I'm a much more recent 'convert'.

I grew up with an Apple ][ E playing dr j and larry bird for hours, my dad was a high school teacher who insisted on having macs in his room from day one so I grew up around them and went all over the country to the conventions during the summers. I then moved on to a mac 3400 for $5000 which I regret now because it was a load of cash wasted...I still have it laying around running some programs....now I work with a Powerbook TI which I adore fully since OS X came out which I consider to be one of the best OS ever made on one of the best computers ever made. I also use wintel which I am going to try and phase out of my life in the next six months...all the reboots and updates piss me off....

peaboy : Hi. I'm Peaboy, and my first Mac was a IIcx at work. In those days, my employer let us choose Mac or Wintel. Sorry those days are gone; only Wintel allowed now. At home I've owned a Power Center 120, blueberry iMac 333 MHz G3, and now my pride and joy 800 MHz G4 flat panel iMac.

I mostly lurk because you folks know so much more than me about Macs and networks. I greatly appreciate your knowledge and helpful attitude in this forum.

My first 'puter was a Texas Instruments 99/4A in 1982. (toy.) Then I bought an Apple //e back in the day when the computer store gave us a new owners' class. I got weak a few years later and bought a Radio Shack PC/XT clone. I had a 300 baud modem and got online with Compuserve, chatting with people on the "CB Simulator."

When I came back to my senses, I sold that and got a Mac SE. Several all-in-one Macs later, I bought a Powerbook 3400. ($5,000.) When I got over that, I finally got an iMac. (600 mHz G3.) I'm lusting after the new iMac, but got this one just three months before the new one came out, so I'm stuck with it for a while.

Got DSL a couple of years ago and here I am!

thehyper1 : I've had a Mac since 1984. Used to sell them. Before Macs I had an Apple ][+ and a //e. Much time was wasted on the original Castle Wolfenstein.

The original 128k Mac got me through college. Since then I've been through several generations: 603, 604, first PPCs, G3s and now a G4. Almost all continue to function in one capacity or another. I'm on the G4/400, my wife has a blueberry ibook, my daughter is using the G3/266 MT. All are networked through the Linky to the DSL. Others are tucked in closets and pulled out for special purposes on occasion.

I am forced to use WindowsNT at the office. So it should be pretty obvious that I would enjoy coming home to my own little Mac-world.

UltimateTech : UltimateTech - Tech because I work for dsl line provider and Ultimate because I'm damn good at what I do. Came to DSLR looking to help customer's in my spare time when I can, stumbled upon ATM since I'm a total Mac newb and need lots of help. I've a wintel guy for about 8-9 years and have dabbled in Linux just for fun. Wanted to get a Mac so I could learn the OS to better help some of my customer's and to make myself more valuable to my employer. Went with the iBook because I needed wanted a portable at the time I was looking around and now Apple is starting to grow on me. I still love my windows box and I love my iBook. I say why fight about which is better, they both have their good points and bad. I guess I'm just a big ol' tech whore :D

I don't think I've been here 90 days, I'll have to find the receipt from my PowerMac to find out when I started coming here. Can't say I've ever even had any real problems other than buying the damn thing (Stupid Circuit City.....). I love it, and I love OS X, and I'm too strong to bow to the Moorines :P

rmartin123 : Hi am a PCer who also loves Mac. I have several older Macs which I get from local auctions and such but I did purchase a new QuickSilver G4-Dual 800 a few months back and love it. Little disappointed that not only are Macs more expensive anyhow but the Dual 1000s came out just a few months later and at much lower price! hehehe but I guess thats what I get for wanting the current high end at the time ;)

My Mac usage: MacPlus, PowerBook 145B, PowerMac 6500, and now use a PowerMac G4/400.

I am in the Navy. On my last ship, I was fixing and maintaining PeeCee's (yuk). Now, I am fixing and maintaining tactical computers using HP-UX.

I have converted my wife to using Macs. She will never go back to Wintel.

My first Mac was a Mac Plus which replaced my Apple II+ (Whiled away many an hour playing Karateka and Lode Runner)

I currently am the proud owner of over 70 Macs, from my original Plus, through my current G4 including the 90 percent finished iMacquarium.

I'm lucky enough to earn my living on Macs as a consultant and I worked for Apple as a Contract Developer and also was co-owner of an Apple Authorized retail store (until my *%&# bastard partner pulled out).

I love this place! Best, most helpful Mac forum anywhere!

I've had my iBook for officially a month and I adore it. I think most have a pretty good clue about me though as I've been attempting to participate and help out -- bring my *nix experience in exchange for mac os info! :)

Me though, the person: I'm the moody, elitist, artsy photographer, painter, code h4x0r, beatnik, poet, who likes to sleep until 4pm sometimes - since I'm 'my own boss' (hosting company bot) I can do that. :-)

Had a Mac when it was released in 1984. Mac 128K. Then went SE. Then got a PowerPC (still have it). Then PowerBooks. My latest. TIPBG4 667/30/512. Never sold the old stuff. Just found a way to fit it in ;)

manx6 : I've been in the Apple camp since 1978. (Apple II+ S/N 1820) First Mac was the Mac 512 (with the engraved signatures of the original Mac team inside). Latest is a custom build QuickSilver G4, 833Mhz, 1GB ram, SuperDrive, GForce3, etc. In between were a 512E, IIsi, IIci, Performa, and a 7600. I still have them all and they all still work.
