Re: Messed Up Priorities

I put broadband up there near the top.For a short term outage I would put it at the top. I would rather lose electricity than my broadband connection for a short term outage. Like 2.5 hours or less.

Sure electricity is important but if my electricity goes out for a few hours it's no big deal to me. All my electronics are on UPSs so I can continue using everything for a few hours. And I can continue to have an ONT connection for up to 18 hours so I can still use my cellphone, laptops, tablets etc as long as that ONT is up. And if the ONT goes out I have a T-Mobile Hot spot I can use

My power went out for an hour yesterday. I didn't even know it was out until half an hour later. I was playing Modern Warfare 3 on my Xbox 360 on my LED DLP set with everything powered up(receiver, subwoofer, etc). So I didn't even realize the power was out until I had stopped gameplay for a few minutes.

I would much rather my electricity go out for a few hours than my internet connection. Pretty much everything I do on a daily basis is tied to having an internet connection. Whether at work or at home or even just using my smartphone. Most of the use with all my electronic devices needs an internet connection.

Ummm...guess what. The UPS was providing you with...wait for it...electricity. Your electricity doesn't go out until the UPS is dead.

And those towers that provided you with the wireless signal? They require electricity too.

Gas and electricity are used to heat homes and water and cook food. Broadband don't. What's more important? Playing Modern Warfare 3 or having warm food and milk for infants.

It's not really power unless you abuse it.

But the discussion isn't about electricity provided from a UPS or a generator, it's about electricity supplied by a utility company.

I know people who can live for weeks if not months without being connected to any electrical or water utility. They have well water and a generator. And the generator can easily run for weeks with the fuel they have on site. So their main utility they would need is a broadband connection.

If I lived in a house I would have a whole home UPS/generator so the utility supplied electricity would never interrupt anything. The batteries would kick in first and then the generator would kick in later. But I live in a condo so I don't have that option. So I can only have individual UPSs around to power my electronic devices. I don't have to worry about heat or A/C since I live in a basement condo so it will never get too hot or too cold since most of it is below ground.
