re: Most Important Home Utility Is Internet Service

quote:
More than half (52 percent) of all U.S. Consumers surveyed say Internet service is their home's most important utility, according to the first in a series of tech consumer research surveys
Then more than half of consumers are morons. Let them go a week without electricity or water and see if they have the same stupid opinion.

Electricity, Water, Food, Heat they can live months without. Take away their Facebook and You-Tube and they'll die within an hour. Sad isn't it?

They'll be forced to ... GASP .... communicate with others in the house by actually speaking to them!

And if it's NOT here, I don't get the shakes and go into a meltdown. WE KNOW Who the losers are. By the way, most losers can't seem to communicate without foul language, have you ever noticed that?

The internet is important but I think electricity or maybe gas, is more important. During a big ice storm in 2006 or 2007, forget exactly which year, we lost power for 3 days. After the ice destroyed the power infrastructure, the temps dropped into the teens and single digits. I managed to keep the house comfortable (90+ in the basement, 70+ on the first floor and 55-60 on the second floor) with a natural-gas fireplace that did not require power. If not for that fireplace, we would have had to winter-proof and evacuate the house. I used the propane gas grill on the deck to cook.

Observations:

1) I was never able to break the habit of walking into a room at dusk and trying the light switch before remembering there's no electricity.
2) Used an inverter from the car battery to periodically watch news reports on a small TV.
3) The water heater was also natural gas so we still had hot water. It was nice to take regular showers throughout the ordeal.
4) Since it was cold outside, I transferred everything in the freezers to coolers on the deck.
5) My work had power so I still went to work each day. Mom and the kids stayed home and it was clear they were stir crazy by the time I arrived home.

The Internet wasn't really missed. Without gas, we would have been doomed. If the gas went out and we still had electricity, it would have been even easier. In another house the furnace's draft inducement motor died. I was able to keep the house toasty by using the oven. I'm sure an oven isn't cost effective when it comes to heating a house but it did a marvelous job.

I think water would be inconvenient but perhaps mostly from a cleaning/hygiene perspective. It's inconvenient but you can fill the toilet tank and still flush it. If you have a big enough container, you can also pour water directly in the bowl and "flush" it.

LOL. No kidding. Dumb post of the day award. The losers are the ones that think their Internet service is more important than water and electricity.

I would say electric is the most important of all if you have a well and water is the most important if you have city water.

Mainly because if on a well you need the power to pump the water, But if you have city water and it is completely a gravity system it will function without power at the customer location.

Without electricity you have no internet unless you use your cell phone or a UPS or a laptop connected to dial-up. After the battery dies you will again have no internet. So considering the internet is dependent upon electricity, would that not make electricity more important? And you can't live very long without water.

The problem is we have people who have not ever lived without water and electricity for more than a matter hours or simply do not remember. Being rural, if I lose electricity I lose everything. Internet, water, and heat. People are growing too dependent on everything always working and apparently have no concept of what happens when things go out for extended periods of time. And are really not prepared for anything. I am not really a dooms day person, but I do strongly believe you need to prepared because stuff does happen. The typical emergency kit with expired drugs, insufficient food and water for a single person, a crank flashlight or traditional flashlight with leaked batteries that probably won't work, dependency on a working cell phone, and simply the wrong items won't do the trick. People's only sense of survival these days is finding an alternative method to accessing Facebook. How pathetic we have become.

Let them try to use the internet without electricity... During a storm we went without power for days a few years back. I was going a bit insane with boredom without power or internet, but I had water and a gas hot water heater and being able to take a shower was much better than being able to go on facebook.

Re: re: Most Important Home Utility Is Internet Service

Agreed. I have to be careful on how I word my response, some are sensitive.

I think the reason why they want Broadband classed as a utility is so that they can get tax payer money. The government would fund builds into rural areas, and those unable to pay for it, would get it.
Sorta like how they are able to get gas/electric/telephone service now.

I am old enough to remember what it was like not to have a cell phone on your hip. It was great, because people had to wait to contact you.
People actually read entire books, not blog snippets.

Broadband isn't a need, it's a want.*

*I understand some work from home, take college courses online. But it's still a want for the majority of us.
Just like the Ipod, Ipad, Segway, there is no real need for them, but marketed just right and a want was created.

I've been in the business of computers and networking for WELL over 30 years. Started with mainframes... had email from the mid-late 70's when people didn't know what a PC (or a computer) was (they hadn't been invented yet). I worked for the company that was contracted to host ARPANET because we had the 1st and 2nd largest networks in the world back then, the 2nd was a backup and test network for the 1st. NEVER saw Al Gore, who "Invented" the Internet there.

Technology has been my "hobby" since I was young and I found out I could make a very good living from "Playing", so that's what I've done all my life. To me it was fun.

It seems, we've grown totally dependent on these toys we've developed and forgotten what "WORK" really is. Yes, I ENJOYED my work. It was fun, in the grand scheme of things, but there where many times I arrived at the office wondering IF I really wanted to put the key in that door one more time. Some times just weren't fun anymore for one reason or another.

There have been MANY times that I've found myself separated for long periods of time from my beloved technology and I survived, and prospered. It's just a tool, one of many. There are SO many things more important. As a nation, we seem to have forgotten. We're all about "things", "toys", "money". I really regret my small part in getting US here. We used to have long, moral discussions about "What IF" what we developed was miss-used. Seems that has come to be. The WORST has come to pass.

Can you live alone? Ask yourself that seriously. If the answer is no... YOU'RE in for a world of hurt.
