The big difference between Google FTTP and Verizon FTTP is that VZ will still be in the internet business 10 years from now. Googles project is simply a doomed experiment. Unless Google wants to fudge their numbers, their quarterly earnings in respect to their "wireline" division will be a joke, and an embarrassment.
We'll see which company will be a joke in 10 years.. when you boil down all the wasted millions Verizon will churn through in wireless just to please share holders in the short term and forcing long-term pain on the company including the jettisoning of the union labor force when the contract expires will throw the company into a chaos & market share somewhere between Sprint and MCI worldcom for a long time.
BTW, I'm not saying google will have more passable customers than Verizon, I mean google will have one of the very few FTTP services offering REAL RESIDENTIAL customers a SYMMETRICAL internet speed of 1 gigabit. I-- and google are not naive enough to think they can become a full-fledged ISP/telco/cableco and start flouting time tested incumbency (on a large scale) at this time... the country's not ready for that yet.. you have too many corrupt government people who like it just the way it is-- and that is to say VERY ANTI-CONSUMER, and ANTI-COMPETITIVE. To think that google is able to accomplish this at all is a damned miracle given the ancient prejudice to giving monopoly and/or duopoly protected status irrespective of how that company treats its customers. As far as profit for the service goes, The cost of backbone bandwidth will drop when google becomes a major buyer & provider of those services. When it finally leaks out how much ISPS are overcharging by it will be a scandal similar to that of the Compact Disc music prices of the 1990s. |
