Re: Make him pay

said by MalibuMaxx:

The amount owed to the record label..

not this fake number but a real amount...

99 cents or 1.29 or whatever it is on itunes now... as well as the lawyer fees/court fees and some of the salary for those who caught Joel...

But if you ask me this is one big joke...

99 cents is what it costs to buy it in the first place,
This is alot more expensive because they had to chase him down and legally pound the snot out of him to get him to pay.
Exactly the difference between a paying customer going through the cash register line and a shoplifter that they catch and sue above and beyond the criminal proscution, so that the legal customers don't shoulder the costs of his actions.
This is one case, when there are hundreds or thousands of judgements and people come to understand they don't go away, after bankruptcy the collection agents will still be there ready to take any thing he ever owns, every penny he earns PLUS interest.
Then others will think twice before using others property without permission.

They will repossess his property probably, but will never recover the money that they are looking for. Silly judgements are silly.

You obviously have no idea how wage garnishments work. He can only ever be garnished a certain percentage of (future) wages until it's paid off - somewhere around 25-30% I believe. All is not totally hopeless in his case, though darned near.

A now he never will, because he failed one of the most basic lessons almost everyone gets drummed into them as little kids

"You don't take other peoples stuff, because it's not right.
don't do it or you will be punished."

I could list a dozen more ways it is said to you both before and after you reach school age, at home, at church, at nursery school, on playgrounds.
But for those that believe it's cool, or the odds of getting caught are so small, or they are above the law, will eventually have to learn, it is wrong! and those that do get caught WILL feel the pain. and have to do without until they pay in full.

Wait...so every time I download my music off Amazon...I'm taking their stuff?

Not if you paid (even $0, if that was the posted price) that Amazon demanded, and as long as amazon is a legal source, a given artist could say "give it away, but never on AMAZON" and get that enforced.

I did not say THEFT... I said "before using others property without permission"
it doesn't have to be theft to be illegal to use in that manner, and have legal and financial value, and therefore have legal and financial penalties for the improper use of it.

Because you obviously can't or don't choose to understand the law, for you we'll keep it simple,
"You don't take other peoples stuff, because it's not right.
don't do it or you will be punished."

You'll do very poorly in any court with that sort of logic, try and stay out of trouble.

Uh, if you take someone to court for theft, and their crime was copyright infringement...you'll find your case thrown out in a very short amount of time.

Pot meet kettle.

This is not theft, in real life or in court.

If your income is low enough you are judgment proof. I would almost assume in this case the there will be zero actual payments.
