what if you are caught tethering

since they are making a point to mentioning loud and clear that tethering is not allowed i am wondering how they plan to control it.

what exactly will be the consequences for people who root there phones, tether and get caught?

cancellation?
automatic plan change?

re rating of past bills and collections(possibly in thousands of dollars)

i do not believe it will be easy at all to control tethering since people are getting more and more sophisticated in bypass methods.

also what about a super powerful android with ubuntu in a VM and a keyboard, mouse and large display? such a setup could easily consume tethering quantity data.

Well, since tethering will be an obvious breach of contract, I'm sure they will "punish" you. However, I doubt they will go to extremes since they aren't exactly the largest carrier, and customers are likely more valuable.

Of course, I'm sure that their prevention of tethering is something simple, such as the option not being there. There are numerous ways to tell if there is tethering happening, the simplest is probably by looking at web browsing headers to see what the OS/browser is.

That being said, I doubt that they will be too strict, but you never know they might just upgrade you to a tethering plan like AT&T was doing w/ their iPhones lol

They can block tethering in the back end. I'm thinking they devised a method to detect tethering via the network and therefore able to block. Who knows.

@qwest.net

is not only a question of if they can detect. what are the consequence when some find a bypass and they find out after the fact.

there is a reason many people who rely on tethering for internet prefer no contract anonymous prepaid over signed agreements.

i somehow doubt t-mobile will extend this to monthly4G prepaid customers even though that's where the demand lies for unlimited and all the competitors(MVNO like simple mobile and straighttlak) at least market 'unlimited' though with hidden 'limits'

They can easily detect that you are using IE or Chrome on a laptop instead of the Android browser or Opera that runs on smartphones. Maybe one solution is to only use Opera on the laptop?

I was using foxfi a few weeks ago, and my nexus 7 would not tether anymore. Rooting didn't help either. So I think they have recently done something on the back end to disable scofflaws.

Enabeling the tethering on new phones is simple. All you need to do is Freeze or uninstall the Tethering.apk file.

It's built in to the phone so not sure how they would know on the backend except for the type of web traffic.

On my old nexus one and HD2 they did it by the browser agent.

If only there was some way to create a VPN or otherwise send the data through a secure tunnel to a proxy...

That was sarcasm in my post. I just connect to my VPN server at home.

User agent status is easily changed in most browsers. Firefox on my phone tells websites that I'm running the full version. User agent would not be a reliable way to block tethering on the back end.
Root it. Tether it. No problems.

There used to be a way to detect the OS based on packet sequence numbers and other header bits. Different IP stacks have small variations in their RFC interpretations. The variations can be used as a "fingerprint". I don't know if this is still true but if it is, that's a bit harder to mask.

I'm running Chrome on my AT&T Note, so I don't see that working. If you are rooted and freeze tether manager with Titanium Backup, they won't know you are tethering.
