[speed/latency] verizon infrastructure must be messed up

I have been a Verizon DSL customer since about 2004, and for the most part the speeds and quality of signal I got for all of these years was constant. My modem used to sync at 1792 Kbps / 448 Kbps. now (as of the last few weeks) it only syncs at 1504 Kbps / 448 Kbps. This speed isn't even real because a speedtest at verizon's own website says I get 1.281 Mbps / .384 Mbps.

Recently when i try to play games online they are so choppy and laggy that its not possible. One day the connection just stopped working all-together. When I run a speedtest at speakeasy, speedtest, or here at dslreports the download portion barely even works and gives me results like .3 Mbps down sometimes and like .6 Mbps down at others. Upload always seems to run the test ok. pingtest.net gives me decent results sometimes but subsequent tests will sometimes give me pings in the 100s and jitter in the 100s.

I have called tech support a few times. 1st time the guy tries telling me that 1504 Kbps is the absolute best my location can do. He keeps telling me this even though I told him that for 8 years it would sync 1792 Kbps. Basically he didn't do anything and just said tough. So a few days later I call again and this time the guy tries telling me it must be my old westell modem, so he has a new actiontec modem shipped to me overnight (great!). I hook up the new modem and it still syncs at the exact same speeds 1504 /448. The new modem did nothing to help, in fact the next day it wouldn't even let me into it's interface.

I call verizon yet again at this point and I was insisting on some help. The guy I talked to this time actually tried helping me by having me do ALOT of redundant stuff that I already tried before calling. Then he even insults my inteligence by having me allow him to do a go-to-my-PC session so he could check my modem settings himself, which he confirmed were indeed correct. Now at this point I go on hold and when he comes back I am talking to a new guy who tells me that it could be the card at my CO because he sees I am on old 2nd generation equipment and he could upgrade me to 3rd gen equipment if I didn't mind my unusable service shut down for a few hours. I said great, please do that!

So later on that day my internet light comes back on on my modem and to my suprise my modem was synced up at 1792 / 448, excellent.. they fixed it (i thought). My download speeds had all normalized for a few hours I was again getting a solid 188 KBps download speeds, my ping was great and games were playing nice and smooth again, I was a happy camper for the rest of that evening. The very next morning I check the modem and its is synced at 1504 again... reboot modem and same result.

Thought o-well if I lose a little speed but have a solid connection I'l be happy enough. No dice, my connection again won't let me play any online games as well as all other original symptoms returned. At least I can load web pages, albeit slowly compared to the DSL I had for 8 years.

I tried calling verizon again today and the option for tech support wasn't even in the automated menu. So I go to billing and asked to get connected to tech support. She patches me through where it tells me there is a 30minute wait time. 30 minutes later the hold system was still telling me there is a 30 minute wait time, so I hung up and came here to vent.

This has now been a 2+ week issue and I am starting to consider switching to my local cable company. If verizon can't provide me service even though I had it for years, I have no choice. For now I'll wait a few weeks to see if they can fix a problem that they either won't tell us about or they don't know about. I have had a few spans of time where the dsl got terrible similar to this and the issue had cleared up on its own. This time the duration of the problem is really starting to be a problem. I'll be calling them during regular business hours again tomorrow.

I am sorry to hear that, I am having similar issue and it's been a few months. I stop calling them because it always ended up me losing my internet. They haven't credited me back like they promised to for the month i had no internet.
I'm going to try if I can get it resolved over here.
GoodL Luck with your Internet
