I'll tether to my phone before using public Wifi but more public FREE WiFi is better than less. Google's will less likely be overloaded.

It depends on what type of AP's they use. Getting ~120mbps of total throughput isn't uncommon for corporate grade access points with 802.11n if they are of the smart antenna variety.
