kherrPremium join:2000-09-04 Collinsville, IL | What kind of saw blade to cut down composite door ?? I need to cut down a couple of interior doors. What kind of blade should I use ?? It's not wood. I think the shell is MDF. They are the economy doors from HD. |

robbinPremium,MVM join:2000-09-21 Leander, TX kudos:1 | I always use a fine tooth blade when trimming doors. It doesn't really matter the material, it will leave the smoothest cut. --- Just checked, the blade I use for doors is a carbide 7 1/4" 40 tooth blade which the manufacturer calls a finishing blade. |

| reply to kherr Use the blade robbin sugested and put tape along where you're cutting on both sides of the door, BEFORE you mark the line. Blue tape is good. Helps to prevent a ragged edge. -- Obama has spent an average of 138 minutes a week in economic meetings. New dog owners spent an average of 130 minutes a week walking their dogs. |

I'll opt for the sure fire way to get a straight cut by clamping a straight edge to the door though. A couple of pads on the bottom and I'm good to go ... |

| reply to kherr I use a panel blade for hollow core doors. They are thinner, have double the tooth count of standard finish blades and don't have the carbide tips. I also use painters tape to span the kerf-line before cutting.
You're just cutting the bottoms, right?

 | reply to kherr Depending on how much you trim off the bottom, you may cut off the whole solid edge of the hollow door. The filler strips across the top and bottom of those economy doors are pretty narrow. If that happens, not to worry too much. Get a length of 2x4 longer than the door is wide and rip a piece off one edge that is exactly as wide as the gap in the bottom of the door, and then trim it to length. Carefully glue and clamp this replacement strip back into the bottom edge of the door and the door will be as strong as new.
edit - as dolphins said in his post that went up while I was typing...

| If the cut off removes the entire bottom block, I just use a 5 in 1 (I keep mine sharp) tool to remove the laminate from the blocking and re-glue, saves time. -- Stop The Mindless Killings Stop Over Fishing |

| reply to dick white It will be an inch or less, probably 5/8". I need to really decide what flooring I'm going to use. I'm learning to use 3/8s bamboo. The reason I need to cut off some is because I decided to add 1/2" ply to the subfloor, it's 1X4 T&G spanning 2' and was built sometime in the 40s. It really needed to be beefed up. |
