unions are the best

If we did not have unions, we would be working 16 to 20 hours a day for whatever we could get, .50 a hour like China.......you would be living in one room with your family and your mother and father, while the CEOs and exes live it up , making millions....so if you do not like unions, be thankful we have them because they do all the fighting for us, study labor history sometime, like in the 1800s and early 1900s in America....

Unions in the beginning served a purpose, but since the latter part of the 1900's became corrupt and greedy and have led to more people LOSING their jobs than keeping them. I really can't blame Verizon or any other corporation that want to get rid of people who want the best bennies and the most pay, to sleep. Would YOU pay YOUR employees to sleep instead of work?

You point at China as being so horrible. Is THEIR economy collapsing? Do THEY have double digit unemployment? Are THEY TRILLIONS of dollars in debt that they can never pay back? Unions priced American labor out of the market. If you're going to talk about "labor history" talk about the more recent part too.

China is communist, you fail to mention that. Talking about your retired wife, is irrelevant; I hope she is doing well in retirement. Now about unions, they have to adjust to the new realities in place right now because the economy is so weak and will strengthen over time. Furthermore in your analysis, you fail mention China has no environmental regulations, utilizes population control, and civil rights are severely limited, period.

Ask yourself, does the corporate sector become greedy? I hope you realize it does. Not everything in life revolves around the dollar or screwing the common person out of a decent life. The majority of people in the U.S. work for a living. If you look at the Bureau of Labor Statistics and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services statistics, poverty is growing and that is alarming. Forget the executive banging his hand looking for numbers when he/she refuses to admit they have narcissistic personality disorder.

When we as a society allow one to jump ship with millions of dollars in a "retirement package" , that doesn't feed a family or help those who built that company from the bottom up. Morals and ethics do account for something.

And Amerika is capitalist. Are you going to launch into the "we are free" routine? Free to what? Be monitored constantly by a paranoid government? Have our Constitutional, civil and human rights violated on a daily basis? Choose a leader from column A or column B neither of which care at all about the little people, the people who built this country, only their rich friends. The Constitution has become a meaningless rag. There ARE no freedoms here. So tell me, why does this free country have the highest rate, per capita of incarcerated persons? Are we a lawless, criminal society or does our government just like to lock up a certain percentage of the population to keep them in line and of course increase the size of its' own bulk, hiring the thugs that arrest, process and incarcerate them?

Talking about the general work ethic at Verizon is irrelevant to you, because you don't like to hear facts. Do you think it's gotten better over the years? Union workers, on the whole, are greedy and lazy. Greedy and lazy people do not build or even maintain an economy. Poverty IS on the rise and this is only the beginning. We're racing the Tidy Bowl Man to the bottom of the bowl my friend. Do you think you're going to wake up one morning and hear "The Recession is over. Everyone go back to your high paying jobs and enjoy life again"? You are much more likely to wake up and hear "The toilet paper shortage continues, but those little, green pieces of paper everyone has in their wallets make an excellent substitute and that's about all they are good for".

It's nice to wag your finger at the big corporations and yell GREED, but the little guys who want a days pay for no work are just as much to blame. Morals and ethics means EVERYBODY.

CO Techs MADE themselves akin to a firefighter. They HAD work to do on ALL 3 shifts, they just chose not to do it and stupidly management let them get away with it.

Nothing like speeding up inflation. As if capitalism isn't bad enough.

Wanna know why large companies have gone overseas? Ever ask yourself why those UNION jobs seem to be rife with Racism and Sexism when compared to other non-union workplaces? How about unionized schools that are seemingly stuck in an endless loop of complaining about being underfunded? They complain, money pours in, nothing seems to improve and then they complain about being underfunded before they can answer where the money went? Ever wonder why you favorite company that was making a fortune before unionizing, went bankrupt? How about GM, why do you think they needed a bailout, pensions and why were the pensions so high, you guessed it.

One answer: UNIONS.

Did you know that a Union is fundamentally un-democratic and ever wonder why it doesn't work well in an alleged (though through and through plutocratic republik) "Democracy"?

Unions served a purpose, in the late 1800's and early 1900's. They brought about better and safer working conditions, a livable wage and many other improvements to the American scene, BUT, then greed and corruption reared their ugly heads. People decided that they wished to be paid high salaries and have great benefits to do little to no work and if they stuck together in a "Union", they could extort the ability to do that from their employers. Amerika became a land in which people didn't compete to see who did the BEST work, they competed to see who could do the LEAST work for the highest pay. That's not how to keep a country (and an economy) strong.

The three most Unionized sectors of the country, civil servants, highway workers and utility workers. Are they known far and wide for their great work? NO! Our culture even makes jokes about how little they work! Where did those jokes about the five guys leaning on shovels watching one guy work come from? From observing reality! Why is civil service referred to as "White man's Welfare" even among civil servants??!!

Greed and corruption are bad things. They are bad in government, they are bad in corporations and they are bad in "workers". It seems over the last 40 to 50 years, the only thing we as a nation HAVE worked hard at, is digging ourselves into a very deep hole. We are approaching becoming a Third World Nation at blistering speed. Wake up sheeple. It's almost slaughter time.

And it will continue as long as systems are in place that promote selfishness and greed, rather than selflessness and generosity.

Or until it collapses from its' own behemoth weight... coming soon to a theater near you

EVERYONE I know is making significantly less than they did three years ago. They are paying significantly less in taxes as well. Guess what?? That means less money to pay do nothing civil servants with, less money for highway projects so they have to cut to 4 guys watching per worker, or maybe even 3, less money for ALL the waste. Lights that might have stayed on until bedtime now get shut off when not needed. The landline phone? Gone... un-needed. The list goes on and on, in an ever downward spiral. The gravy train ride is over. The only Gravy Train people will be seeing soon comes in a bag, and they may very well be calling it dinner.

Actually I will. Be thankful you have a roof over your head and food on the table, many individuals out there don't have that luxury let alone can find a job. What bothers me more is you can't even spell America right and call the U.S. Constitution a rag. Enough with the nihilistic delusions already. Utilize the spell check button and back up your statements with facts.

It's not a nihilistic delusion. It's called reality. Have you watched the news lately, or are you one of those head-in-a-hole types that takes optimism to a blind new level?

I'd like to believe that it won't collapse under it's own weight so much as be replaced before it does, but sadly that does seem to be a pipe dream with so many sheeple rubber-stamping the status quo out of fear and/or fear of change.

Even if we replaced the politicians with statesmen and rid ourselves of all the petty bureaucrats that have been sucking the country dry, how could you undo all the damage? They've emptied the piggy bank of anything of value and filled it with debt we can't possibly ever pay. The sheeple have been trained to not learn, not think... just blindly follow orders and believe whatever bs is thrown at them. They wave the flag and sing songs about a country that ceased to exist decades ago and tell you how they are ENTITLED to the milk and honey, THEY don't have to work for it. I can't see any way to fix it.

Don't gang up on me to try to reinforce what that persons thoughts are. We're recovering from an economic loss that generations have not experienced before. There are positive things in life along with having friends, family, and spirtuality. I tend not to subscribe to anarchy like the previous poster is promoting. Sitting here bashing unions, blaming people who work for the government, and stating unions are the reason everything is wrong underneath the sun is what I have a problem with. People have the right organize to make things better as well as disband to move on to other pursuits in life.

And what caused the greed or at least very significantly contributed to it? Capitalism.

As I said before, greed and corruption are bad. They are bad in government, in corporations and in workers. There is enough blame to go around for all three. As to my former spouse? I could care less one way or another. She was only one of many examples I could have used.

You guys are funny Worker (especially union apparently) and customer greed has some how contributed to the downward spiraling situation? What exactly would the mechanism be for worker/customer greed to encourage or force corporate America to aggressively destroy the middle class?

I don't deny the downward spiral nor do I claim for a second that greed is good in some but not acceptable in others. I would be all for a replacement system based on altruism instead of greed but, if we can't even turn the tide back towards general fairness, what are the chances of actually obtaining that?

And that loss' root caused is itself. We live using an anti-economy. What happens when you do something wrong on purpose and then continue to use it as is?
