| Looking for Surveillance Camera My wife works from home and sometimes she can't answer the door because she is on the phone, so I want to put up a surveillance camera by our front door. Here are a couple of features that I need and was wondering if any of you have some recommendations on personal use with these specs.
- Must be dome and low profile (mounting from ceiling) - Must be Power Over Ethernet (PoE) - Must be outdoor rated (even though it is covered by the roof) - Must be able to have night vision - Having remote zoom & focus is a plus, but not necessary - Ability to view from a webpage (even if just internal LAN)
I am also hoping to stay under $400 for the camera... |

If your mounting it to a wall, you will need a wall bracket. I suggest any of the outdoor rated cameras such as this one. »www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a···81128017
One of my issues with how people install cameras is they put them high on the wall or ceiling to get an overview. This is fine for the big picture, but it can make it difficult to identifiy people in the video. I like to mount a additional camera at 72"AFF just to some quality facetime. -- Getting it Done. |

 | reply to bryank I'm not sure why you're insisting on a dome type, but note that for "night vision" you'll need illumination of some sort, and a dome type won't likely have its own light source, or if it does these LEDs need to be external from the dome lest they reflect-back into the lens.
You haven't mentioned it, but if the visitor were e.g. FedEx with a package-needing-signature, and your wife is on the phone, she'd want to be able to ask the guy to "wait a minute".
If I were you I'd be looking for a video intercom rather than strictly "surveillance". Just one example, didn't look at it closely myself:

These have the added benefit of not requiring the use of the computer, which may be awkward depending on what your wife is doing. Also, she could carry the receiver around the house with her thus not miss that FedEx delivery she's waiting for! |

 | reply to PSWired The aircam dome is not outdoor rated but it's what I use. I have two of them mounted under the eaves and they work really well. |

| reply to bryank So the outdoor rated thing, I guess is not needed since it will be under our porch roof for the front door. Nightvision, as I thought about it, is really not necessary. I wanted dome just because of it's lower profile and sleeker look.
So I was looking at everyone's links and I seemed to like this one and I am able to see a working demo which I tried both during the day and night and I am pretty happy with the quality. Newegg sells this camera for $169 currently.

 | The specs on it state 32-113F and 10-90% RH. So you might have trouble with it in the winter, and long-term the humidity might destroy it.
But it might be worth the risk to you for just $169. |

Nightvision, as I thought about it, is really not necessary. First let me say you will be much better off buying a wireless doorbell! If she can't answer the door because she is on the phone how does a camera help? She still won't be able to get to the door! or she can just answer the door and give the person knocking the Sssh sign! Now even though the camera will be under a roof on your deck it will still be outside, Bad weather - the camera can get fogged up from condensation and other bad things can happen to it Night vision - why not? thieves in your neighborhood don't rob houses at night or do home invasions, please don't tell me your in a totally safe neighborhood, there is no such place! |
