Google Battles Pirates By Burying Search Results

Google will downgrade search results from pirate web sites putting a hurt on people looking for pirated material. »www.businessweek.com/news/2012-0···-content

Google Inc. said it will introduce changes to its search engine that will discourage piracy by placing legitimate copyrighted content higher in online queries.

The company next week will begin using algorithms that push potentially pirated material to a lower position in search results, Mountain View, California-based Google said today in a blog posting on its website.

The new system will use “removal notices,” or complaints from entertainment companies, that a website has received in ranking search results

“So while this new signal will influence the ranking of some search results, we won’t be removing any pages from search results unless we receive a valid copyright removal notice from the rights owner,” Singhal said.

This will hurt pirate sites more than any court actions by RIAA/MPAA.

Nah, pirates are an incredibly adaptable bunch and this is a very low effort workaround. People who haven't already will simply install a browser add-on and/or move to Blekko. This is a fluff move to keep RIAA/MPAA happy.

Thanks for the businessweek link.

They are only doing this to brown nose to the content owners because...
1.) they want the Play Store to be as good as iTunes with as many IPs sold on it.

2.) Google Cable TV in KC will need licenses from the cable stations which all link back to big content.

if it was not for those two things they would continue to give hollywood the finger because nothing would have any pressure on them.
