It depends on the TV. The manual should tell you what input and output formats it is capable of. Usually if it passes 5.1, you have to select that option in the menu, which disables the internal speaker.

No. It doesn't work that way.
5.1 digital audio is not passed through the TV from an HDMI input and out of the optical (toslink) output.

As was discussed here »HDTV Digital Audio Passthrough

In order to get the 5.1 digital audio you need to connect the toslink from the cable box directly to the A/V reciever.

then why put a toslink out on the tv if its just a waste of time ?

It's still digital, just stereo PCM. And they do because they can. You could also get the audio-only output cable for the 360 that has analog stereo and optical output

Some TVs will output 5.1 sound on Toslink from their built in tuner.

It is not a waste of time, it is just not intended for what you are thinking.

The toslink out on the TV is for the 5.1 digital that originates from within the Tv's own ATSC tuner when used to tune over the air broadcasts that are in dolby digital. Such as most of the networks primetime programming, such as Hawaii 5-0, Law and Order and all the crap on ABC.

ALL digital tv's do output 5.1 sound via toslink from their built in tuners. That is the whole and only purpose of the toslink output on the TV.
