Clone HP HDD

I currently have a 320GB 5400RPM HDD in my HP G6 laptop and I just ordered a 500GB 7200RPM Hybrid HDD. How do I go about cloning my old HDD to my new HDD

Easiest way is getting a 2.5" Hard Drive external enclosure and use something like Acronis. Boot up via an Acronis CD/DVD, then clone the HDD over to the new one.

I did that in the same situation you are looking at--going from a 320GB HDD to a 320 GB Momentus XT. Worked flawlessly.

Issues you will need to deal with:

1. Sector size changes; hybrid drives make use of an SSD, so I proper partition alignment matters (not sure if the MHDD portion uses 4K sectors or not). If you're using Windows Vista or Windows 7 then you don't have anything to worry about, but if you're using XP this may be a problem.

2. Resizing your existing NTFS partition (e.g. C:) so you can benefit from the increase capacity (320GB -> 500GB). A direct disk copy is definitely the way to go, but afterwards you should consider resizing the NTFS partition. Tools like GParted can do this, if I remember right. Please be sure to back up all of your data before performing this task!

New HDD in and it works flawlessly !! I couldn't clone the drive, no matter what tool or software I tried. I ended up installing a fresh version of Win 7. I highly recommend the Hybrid drive. Is there a tool to test performance (Win 7)?
