Re: So close, yet so far

A standalone 3GB iPad data plan is $30/month, why is it $40+$10 to access 1GB of data under a shared plan? Makes absolutely no sense.

Why would you do a shared data plan for 1 device? THAT makes no sense!

Obviously you wouldn't at these prices. The point is to illustrate what a poor value this shared plan is.

We have two iPhones, one dumb phone, and an iPad. If I were to switch to this plan, I could keep my bill roughly the same, but instead of each device having its own 3GB bucket, they'd all be sharing a 1GB bucket! We'd only gain cell minutes and texting that we don't need, and we'd lose a lot of data that we actually do use!

I'll be staying on my old plan as long as possible:

2 line 550 anytime + rollover ($59.99)
2 iphones, unlimited data each ($30x2)
= $120 before taxes/discount.
work discount = 25%, total = $94/month.

That's plenty expensive... I don't see any reason to pay more.
Using the AT&T shared data with 1GB would put me at $150 before discount. I'd pay $30/month more... for less ?

That isn't apples to apples, that's apples to stupid.

I use less than 1 gig on my phone, but more than 250 megs, and say I had unlimited voice, and wanted to add my tablet. Thats $70 unlimited voice, $20 unlimited text, and $30 for my smartphone data plan.

That's $120 - without having a plan for the tablet. With shared, I could get the share data plan with 4 Gig AND add my tablet. I could even back down to the 1 GB and come $10 cheaper, and if I happen to go over my 1 GB, pay $15 more, which would only be $5 more per month that I'd originally paid.

It doesn't work out well for everyone, so if it doesn't, don't get it! It's that simple!

This would be the point... Data is the new phone minutes and texts and will be billed accordingly. Just as we all got raped on minutes and texts until it became unlimited for $40.
