Re: The Bandwidth Cap Scam

said by iansltx:

*shrugs* Some Comcast areas can get 50/10 for under $80. It's not great, but it's not the worst thing either.

You know what's bad? Some places can't get more than 3 Mbps for less than $40, or more than 3 Mbps at all unless they want highly-capped ViaSat exede.

I live in a town of just short of 30k in NE Arkansas. We are not 'rural' by any means. We are serviced mainly by the city utility, offering 'Business Class' cable, 4/1, for 62.95/mo. The only valid competition (other than satellite) is AT&T dsl, and they have only one CO here, so their coverage is extremely limited, but they do offer 6/1 naked dsl for about 40/mo. The truly sickening part is, in a number of smaller towns around us, they get better speeds. If we lived outside the city limits, we could get a 10/1 package for about 75$.

Every time I see people bitching about their speed and pricing I just cringe.

You are close to the river. Is it flat where you live? If so, do you have a friend close to the city limits that has the 10/1 package? You could try high power 802.11 WiFi gear with directional antennas to see if you can get point-to-point link. If you can get a link that's faster than 10Mbps, you could pay them for a second cable modem. Maybe?

I curious if you know why the providers outside town won't serve those in the city.

30k isn't exactly urban. The company I work has an ownership in a WISP that operates in rural areas of your town's size and smaller. It can be a challenge to work with local government. Most if not all will get greedy and want their cut of the action. Land owners will also get greedy because they all think that you are funded like AT&T and Verizon. I've seen towns come back and want as much as $10k/mo for access to their water tanks because their friend in some other podunk town got Verizon to pay them big bucks.

I do not, have not, and will not work for AT&T/Comcast/Verizon/Charter or similar sized company.

They don't have a franchise in the city. Only AT&T and the city utility (which runs off of AT&T lines) are allowed to provide internet service, other than satellite services.

It's definitely not urban, but all around us outside the city limits people get faster speeds because they aren't on the city utility. 30 miles over in the next large town of about 60k they have Suddenlink offering better speeds. Our utility could pay for more bandwidth from AT&T (which they did recently - we got bumped from a max of 2mb at 59.99/mo to 4mb at 62.95/mo), but it's not on their priority list. Thankfully nothing I do really 'requires' any more speed, it'd just be nice to have so I could be playing games with the kid and wife watching Netflix and not have one of them suffer.

Yea almost all of NE Arkansas is flatland, flood plain, tornado alley. While I'd like faster speeds, I won't go to that length to run on wireless for a bit more speed with what would certainly be higher latency. We've tossed around the idea of moving outside the city, but we have such a good deal where we are that I'd end up paying a significant boost in rent just to get faster internet. Not worth the trade off.

Depends on where you live. Chatttanooga, TN has municipal fiber and 5 times my speed for 7$ more a month. YMMV
