ViaSat/Wildblue Head Count

ViaSat Announces First Quarter Fiscal Year 2013 Results

Consumer satellite terminal installations grew by about 40% on a quarterly sequential basis driven by effective promotions and improved operational processes. More detailed analysis of subscriber data also indicates a meaningfully higher proportion of WildBlue® subscribers have been upgrading to the Exede service, as opposed to disconnecting, compared to prior estimates. For the first quarter, our consumer Internet service reported the following metrics:

Ending Subscribers: 404,900 (22% on ViaSat-1)
Gross Adds: 46,835
Migrations from WildBlue to Exede: 19,370
Total new service installations (gross adds + migrations): 66,205
Net new subscribers: 20,000
Average Monthly Churn: 2.4%
Weighted Average service ARPU: $46.44

So 22% of subscribers are on Viasat-1. That is pretty impressive.

Any information on what percent of people are on Exede (including Exede 5 users)?

Viasat shares have taken a bit of a hit since the company lost money for the quarter. Investors are not overly thrilled with the company's performance.

With 22% of subscribers on Viasat-1...that equates to about 100,000 right now. Being that the satellite has capacity for 1 million subscribers...they only need 900,000 more customers to fill up Viasat-1.

Glad they are saving all that bandwidth with their low cap plans so they can have room for all 900.000!

Only 900,000? Could have fooled me. I thought for sure with these low caps they would be able to pack on at least 2 million users.

They will be lucky to get 500,000 users. Even if every customer moved off the legacy system, Viasat-1 only covers about 2/3rd's the US. And in a lot of this area, they can't use Recovery Act funds to entice customers. That's too bad...because I would love to take advantage of the special Recovery Act prices/cap levels that Viasat won't sell to just anyone.

Speculation....EchoStar XVII is not live yet...the "fireworks" will begin around November.

Once Hughes officially sets their plan/prices...expect price changes.

Once both "can't" get new customers, then comes lower prices and/or higher caps/daps.

I think they will get customers. Not 1 million, but I don't think 500k will be a problem.

According to Viasat, they have extra capacity to offer speeds beyond the current 12mbps.

They are already doing this....even on Exede 5, one can hit near 18 mbps speeds in the wee hours.

ViaSat's equipment (SB2) is used on TooWay's system in UK; they offer plans to 18 mbps down and 6 mbps up: »www.tooway.com/

True they are. Although they are not advertising higher speeds. They are simply being lax at capping speeds. Actually a smart move on their behalf.

Any idea if users on Exede 5 are experiencing faster speeds on Anik-f2 or WB-1?

If you check out this video, it suggests customers could see 18 mbps speeds....
