Basic subscriber losses bad in long term; but OTA death good

Revenue keeps going up due to remaining users subscribing to higher tiers and voice bundles, but eventually the loss of basic users will hurt the providers - less users to up sell to the higher tiers.

One bright light on the horizon, however, is that the govt and the FCC seem intent on killing off OTA TV. A lot of people that dropped basic cable and Sat company TV are using OTA to keep getting all the local TV stations content. If that option disappears, the providers could start regaining customers.

If this does happen, then I hope everyone impacted pirates the heck out of everything, and I hope the content companies lose big time over this.

We choose OTA TV because we do not place the same financial value on TV content that the content providers do. We choose to not partake in these paid-for offerings and instead choose the option that costs us nothing out of pocket, save for one time equipment and antenna setup costs.

Agreed wholeheartedly, if I lose OTA TV, I won't be getting PayTV to replace it.

Of course this begs another question, if OTA is made unsustainable, then isn't the government forcing some type of middleman in there, and preventing networks for doing business directly with their customers?

If they do kill off OTA completely there will still be free to air satellite TV. There is more free to air content available than some people realize. The upfront cost for equipment is higher, perhaps equivalent to about five or six months of an average cable TV bill. Most independent local satellite TV installers will also install FTA.

I've noticed that the number of OTA channels is on the increase recently..

So, I really doubt OTA is going away anytime soon..

Are you obtuse? Losing OTA is NOT a good thing. And no the FCC won't take away OTA. They wanted to get 120 MHz from OTA. Which still left over 150 MHz for OTA to use. Now they are hoping for maybe 80 MHz. And even that they won't get it until 2016 at the earliest and channels 14-36 on UHF will still exist as well as channels 7-13 on Hi-VHF. So OTA will be here for a long while. Sorry Mittens.

If you want non-religious english programming the channel selection is very slim pickings. There is some NBC and PBS feeds, but I wouldn't be surprised if they were to suddenly become encrypted.
