Re: No one here understands what this speed is used for

Im not giving it a rest, sorry. When a popular application comes out to even require 100Mbps, then I'll zip it. For the next 10-20 years, I will continue to voice my opinions regarding this matter.

How about Carbonite being able to back up 20GB of vacation photos and videos from my PC to their server in under an hour instead of days on my current connection, reducing the chance that a drive failure on my machine causes me to lose all of the photos and videos?

How about being able to record 8 HD shows at the same time on the DVR, all while streaming Netflix to 3 different machines at once, having a Skype video conversation with my mom, and downloading the latest Windows ISOs 3 at a time, and not having any of them have issues with bandwidth?

Carbonite is crap...they're throttling you at their end, more than likely.

Sorry, I'm trying not to be too much of a Backblaze shill here, but I can upload things at a reasonable pace on them...which is why my desktop is currently fully backed up

I often argue the case that a smartphone app doesn't need more than a few Mbps on a 4G network. Most people don't need much even for home service either. Even most power users don't need more than 100Mbps, but does that mean Google shouldn't be offering this? I'm more interest in the uplink than downlink - and yes, FIOS would be enough too but it looks that VZ has stopped rollout and charges more. Google has the edge.

The VZ FIOS Fanbois probably don't have much to worry about yet. Google still hasn't delivered this widely yet even in KC. And they might give up in a year or two and sell the network to someone else.

Youre entitled to your opinion, but its foolish to pay extra for speeds not utilized.... utilized, EVER.

Uh huh. What's foolish is to pay for speeds that are 10% of these and only a few dollars cheaper..... and saying it's not utilized ever is beyond foolish.

If you don't want the speed, take the free option. You could just as easily say it's dumb to pay for slow speeds from someone else when you get it for free from Google.

Some people always have to complain about anything & everything.

Most people now? Hell no.

The most popular BW consumption that people do right now is Netflix, and thats streaming HD over 5 Mbps. So, do you want to stream to 200 bedrooms at once?

and let me ask you people something. If Gbps subscribers in KC are visiting a server in California, what throughput will they see?

They're offering 1Gbps for around the price people are paying for less than 10Mbps. It would be $79.99 a month for me to get 7Mbps DSL. Google is offering 100x that for $10 less.

100x the speed for less money... the problem lies where exactly?

most sites (microsoft, amazon, netflix, etc) will hit multiple gbps no problem.

At one point in time I had a dedicated server in NYC that could pull an ISO from a server in Japan at 750mbps no problem. That was just for testing. From Cali, it was hitting >900mbps. The tier 1 networks are more than capable of hitting these speeds and most webservers are easily upgradable to hit it also. Bandwidth is cheap in datacenters.

$10 less? Great! 10X's, 50X's, 100X's , who gives a crap? People are being brainwashed into thinking they need such speeds right now, and it truly doesnt matter for 99% of people.

Please explain why my 42/33 drops down to 5-20Mbps when I test to the west coast.
