Re: No one here understands what this speed is used for

Give it a rest. Your employer doesn't compete with Google Fiber, so take your downplaying attitude elsewhere. No good reason to even talk about it here. Unless of course you're here to announce that Verizon will suddenly have reasonable pricing (I consider EPB's pricing to be reasonable for the speeds they provide) for their FiOS services on the low and high ends. 15/5 over fiber for $70 per month isn't reasonable, it's more o the same crap that cable companies try to push.

Im not giving it a rest, sorry. When a popular application comes out to even require 100Mbps, then I'll zip it. For the next 10-20 years, I will continue to voice my opinions regarding this matter.

OK, Im sorry. Please Google, come to my neighborhood so I can never use even 10% of your allotted bandwidth.

While we're at it, I'll also state that I hope Google is working on Tbps residential connections so I can surf the web, even... faster

Why should Google do anything other than deliver the blistering speeds? Build it and they will come... as is true every time there is an increase in computing speeds

How about Carbonite being able to back up 20GB of vacation photos and videos from my PC to their server in under an hour instead of days on my current connection, reducing the chance that a drive failure on my machine causes me to lose all of the photos and videos?

How about being able to record 8 HD shows at the same time on the DVR, all while streaming Netflix to 3 different machines at once, having a Skype video conversation with my mom, and downloading the latest Windows ISOs 3 at a time, and not having any of them have issues with bandwidth?

Carbonite is crap...they're throttling you at their end, more than likely.

Sorry, I'm trying not to be too much of a Backblaze shill here, but I can upload things at a reasonable pace on them...which is why my desktop is currently fully backed up

Re: No one here understands what this speed is used for

I often argue the case that a smartphone app doesn't need more than a few Mbps on a 4G network. Most people don't need much even for home service either. Even most power users don't need more than 100Mbps, but does that mean Google shouldn't be offering this? I'm more interest in the uplink than downlink - and yes, FIOS would be enough too but it looks that VZ has stopped rollout and charges more. Google has the edge.

The VZ FIOS Fanbois probably don't have much to worry about yet. Google still hasn't delivered this widely yet even in KC. And they might give up in a year or two and sell the network to someone else.

OK there may not be any need for YOU to use it today but why would you only want to settle with todays standard when a better option is available. Top end Computer motherboard manufactures build there motherboard capacity specs well above whats available on the market for when an upgrade is needed. My yrs old HP elitebook was built to max out memory @ 8GB of DDR2, yes DDR2! At the time 2GB of DDR was the normal and not many manufactures even offered 4. That system is now maxed out with 8GB ddr2 ( 2 x 4GB DIMM) and it runs win 7 Ultimate beautifully (Went from XP to Vista to 7) . I only handed it down to a family member as I recently upgraded to a new elitebook with DDR3 that can handle 32GB of memory. That amount on 2 sticks in not even available yet but its nice to know Im ready for it when it is.

Just remember not but 10-12 yrs ago when DSL @ 1.5mpbs was the new hot thing, naysayers were saying the same thing u are, what do you need that for? as they could only in-vision themselves (and everyone else for that matter) checking email using yahoo or msn Messenger and looking at low quality still pictures, to them 56k was good enough. Now look at what todays technology has brought us.

Time tells all tales...

I have nothing against it. What Google is doing here is fine with me. Of course todays speeds are tomorrows diaup, but there really is no emergency for it.

Back in the day with 1.5Mb DSL, people werent saying what Im saying. You still had like 1 minute wait time for songs, and it was quite obvious video was to be offered over the net. People act like its imperative that we get speeds so we can download 10 seasons of Seinfeld in 5 seconds.

Video offerings are the number one reason we need these speeds, then we expect the MSO's to offer such speeds when it erodes their revenues? Its quite a predicament, and the reason why Google will not make money on their services. If people subscribe to their Google TV, what real reasons are there to have Gbps? As someone else stated, potential to download whole PC games faster, but right now, Aunt Sally, and Grandma Helen arent doing that.
