Awsome powersupply

You know I've wanted for a long time to be able to monitor a powersupply from windows just like this one offers.

the only deterent to me is the 200MM Dimensions

but wow it seems awsome

What are you running, four GTX 680s? lol

no, I was simpily looking at what corsair has and saw this.

If you must know my current system is
1x GTX570
1x i7 930
24GB ram
1x 2TB drive
1x Intel 520 drive
5x 120mm fans
1x 90mm fans
and a HX 1000 powersupply

yes I know the powersupply is overkill but I'd rather not have to replace it due to not being powerfull enough, and it was a PITA due to the 200mm size (so when I get the HX1050 that corsair is sending via RMA) I might be able to put the top fan in place) (ie 1 more 90mm)

I prefer to know IF I wanted to do SLI I could just get the card and put it in, not get the card and a powersupply.

though right now I need a 2nd UPS because if the GTX570 really gets a good load the UPS beeps for overload (my computer isn't the only thing on the UPS)

Dude you could run your system off a good 650w gold supply. Complete overkill.

Here's my system:

1x GTX 580
1x i7-920
24 GB ram
2x 640 WD Caviar Black HDDs
1x 1.5 TB WD Green HDD
1x 120 GB Vertex 2 SSD
3x 120mm fans
2x 200mm fans
Corsair AX 750 Gold Modular pro

I could put a second GTX 580 in my system and be fine still with the AX-750.

I know I could
But I'd rather have plenty of room for growth.

and my next system will use the same powersupply with plans for a GTX680 4GB down the road (maybe even 2)

This way I KNOW that I won't have any power shortage issue.

also of course I have all fans on max speed, even the video card

also theres a ram cooler in there too (it has 2 small fans)
and in my plans for my next system I'll have 2 of that ram cooler (with kingston T1 ram, ie ther am with the huge heatsinks)

As an addendum, consider the total power consumption of the following system:

• Intel Core i7-980X (Gulftown) 3.33 GHz at 3.73 GHz (28 * 133 MHz), LGA 1366, 6.4 GT/s QPI, 12 MB Shared L3, Hyper-Threading enabled, Power-savings enabled
• Gigabyte X58A-UD5 (LGA 1366) Intel X58/ICH10R, BIOS FB
• Kingston 6 GB (3 x 2 GB) DDR3-2000, KHX2000C8D3T1K3/6GX @ 8-8-8-24 and 1.65 V
• Intel SSDSA2M160G2GC 160 GB SATA 3Gb/s
• Gigabyte GV-N580D5-15I GeForce GTX 580 1.5 GB

»media.bestofmicro.com/T/H/268037···ging.png

That's total system wattage on the left-hand side for an overclocked hexacore first-gen i7 CPU in-game. Granted, extra HDDs will probably add a bit to the load, but they still are not even breaking 450w with the GTX 580. With the GTX 580's TDP at 243w, adding a second card brings you to 700w in worst-case scenarios, and a quality PSU like the Corsair AX can provide continuous power at the rated load, which means 750w would be fine.

That's OK, the TDP of the GTX 680 is even lower than the GTX 580 by about 50w. GPUs' power consumption is usually decreasing each generation as GPU makers learn to eek even more performance under a lower TDP.

But whatever floats your boat. If you want to buy a $350 PSU that will operate at 30% load for its whole life, that's up to you....

Actually I paid, $234.99 for the HX 1000 about 2-3 years ago.

and if the one linked in the OP were of smaller dimentions than the HX 1000 then I'd consider it, but 200mm long makes it VERY hard to get in the case.

I'm RMA'ing the HX 1000 and they're replacing it with a HX1050

Aaaaaaah the great PSU debate!!

Yeah, my $350 was referring to the new AX-1200 in your OP.

On an unrelated note, with lower efficiency at a lower percentage of power draw, I would think you would shoot for Gold or Platinum to offset the lower average power draw (your system will probably idle around 150-200w [15-20%] and under full load only hit 40%--efficiency will be low at those levels).

My current HX 1000 was before the whole gold/silver thing was added to 80plus

the HX1050 that they're sending is 80Plus-gold

the OP one is Platinum.

The only real interesting part to me avout the OP is that you can connect it via USB to your system and monitor it, I'd crank the fan to max and from time to time see what the PS temp is.

also as its the way I setup my home computer for use, I have the power saving features disabled so it doesn't throttle down on idle.

I'd have to look at the power usage info on the UPS again but last I looked I'm around 300w idle

if corsair made a power supply that is easier for me to get into the case that was Platinum and had the USB connection I'd buy it as fast as possible.

That is a cool feature. Do they plan on providing additional information beyond fan speed and temps, such as health of the PSU? I'd like to see that feature trickle down to the smaller PSUs, as IMO the only reason to go over 1000w is if you have three or more GPUs.

Well it says you can monitor power in and out

quote:
Monitor power input and output, efficiency, fan speed, and internal temperature, directly from the Windows based application. Or, take it to the next level and set up and modify fan speed profiles, or even select from virtual “single rail” or “multi-rail” software modes, with selectable OCP points.

So if/when that feature trickeles down that would be enough reason for me to replace my powersupply.

currently I wouldn't get another 200mm powersupply because of the pain in getting that HX 1000 into the case (and the dread of getting it out when the advance replacement arrives) but with the new one I expect I'll be able to put the top fan in and have yet another exhaust fan.

Ya your right the only reason to NEED a 1000w powersupply is for 3+ GPU's or large numbers of harddrives.

But I do like overkill and want whatever powersupply I have to be able to keep pase till some new connector is added. so if I were to opt for tri-sli I know I could. though I currently wouldn't because I don't like using only an 8x slot for a video card even if I know it'll be fine

That is pretty cool the monitoring software for that 1200w PSU. But damn....350.00 dollars is a bit steep.

Simply put. You're an idiot for running those PSUs in your system.

As was pointed out, even a GOOD 500w PSU can run your system. Headroom for SLI? 700w MAYBE. Even the fanless 460w Seasonic can run that system. It's all about the efficiency, not the power it CAN provide.

I think at this point they are just testing how expensive they can make these things and have people who only need 1/3 of that power still buy them.

I'll never bag on someone in the PC world about purchasing an item that's "overkill"

I'm all for it. If you got the money to go all out, then so be it.

It's the same thing with automobiles. Do you really need a car that can go 200mph? LOL of course not. If you want one though and you got the money to be able to purchase one easily, then so be it. It's your business.

One reason only the most powerful units come with the best features is because these companies can't charge enough for lower wattage units and provide the expensive features.

I disagree with Ghastlyone. There are charities if someone wants to spend money, that can save lives. If you've ever been in a 3rd world slum, you understand...

LOL.

You heard it here first Darklogix. You better take that extra $250.00 from an overpriced needless PSU and donate it instead to save lives.
