Re: new AC unit

One thing I did not see mentioned here is that when it comes to A-Coils, Air Handlers and Condensers you can mix and match. I had to replace a fairly new AC system because the A-Coil was leaking and the Compressor had seized because the previous owners service company only recharged the unit and did not add lubricant. The HVAC contractor that I contacted was very helpful. I wanted to upgrade the system but it would have been very costly to remove and replace the old air handler because of the way the utility closet was constructed. The original system consisted of a 42,000 Btu A-Coil and 42,000 Btu Condenser. The HVAC company representative pointed that the Air Handler I had would accommodate a 48,000 Btu A-Coil and a slightly higher efficiency 42,000 Btu Condenser. The combination resulted in an increased SEER from 9.5 to 11.5 and a cooling capacity increased to 45,000 Btu's per hour. That was just enough increased capacity to provide satisfactory cooling on those hot August afternoons.
