Name GamePremium join:2002-07-07 North Myrtle Beach, SC kudos:7 | When contagion strikes, it's Honolulu you should avoidMIT researchers have analysed which airport hubs would be key to spreading a virulent disease, with some surprising results When the next outbreak of Sars or Swine flu hits, New York's John F Kennedy airport and Los Angeles's airports will likely be the key spreaders of disease, according to a new study. But while the influence of these super-hubs may not come as much of a surprise, the third most outbreak-friendly airport in the states is far smaller, and far less obvious Honolulu International. In a paper published Monday in the journal PLoS One, a team of researchers from MIT outlined a new computer model that predicts how the 40 largest American airports may contribute to the diffusion of contagious disease within the first few days of a potential epidemic. They looked at which hubs may be key "early spreaders" because knowing where epidemics may begin is key to stemming an outbreak, Marta Gonzalez, professor in the department of civil and environmental engineering at MIT, and one of the contributors to the new model, told the Guardian. Factors other than sheer volume of travelers may contribute to the spread of disease. » www.guardian.co.uk/world/us-news···-lax-mit-- Gladiator Security Forum »www.gladiator-antivirus.com/

As for Honolulu International Airport, we are already aware of the role we might play (depending on multiple factors) in the spread of a deadly disease. -- When governments fear people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny. Thomas Jefferson |

| reply to Name Game The problem with the "Headline of Doom" is that it applies to only a first-generation view of a contagion... namely the airports into which it's first carried. The problem is that almost none of the folks passing through such places simply stay there... they're exposed, then they quickly move onto into "every Middlesex village and farm" throughout the land, probably long before the "experts" even realize a contagion is underway. Within four or five hours of their planes first landing in the top-listed hubs, the passengers will all have carried exposure into countless other places all over the country.
The reality is that, unless the contagion spreads slower than molasses, there's simply no way to contain it geographically in this modern hyper-travelled world. Apart from the few remaining genuine wilderness regions, there's no place to really hide any more... there are no more "natural barriers". -- "Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? When contagion strikes, it's Honolulu Airport you should avoid I'm pretty sure it's a good idea to avoid the epicenter no matter where it is - once it's know. Before it's known, it's just a matter of luck where you are at the time. Also, wouldn't the places with the highest known threat be best prepared, rather than others that aren't?
I'm just not seeing how making a statement to avoid a particular Airport, such as Honolulu International Airport, is going to help anyone. Interesting article, though Name Game
