alkizmo join:2007-06-25 Pierrefonds, QC kudos:1 | Parked car for 9 months - Brake disks rust So I finally got around fixing a cracked exhaust pipe on my secondary car after 9 months (First time I took a vacation week in over a year and half). I didn't use the handbrake to park it. Just some blocks on the wheels.
I haven't driven it further than a mile total with a few stops along the way.
After getting it rolling, the brakes make a lot of noise. Aside from requiring more pressure on the brake, it's stopping fine.
Will it get better? The brakes weren't used that much since they were last replaced. |

As long as they don't drag, you're fine. -- Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. |

Could be your calipers/ drums are dragging causing the noise. Now that the brake has freed, does the vehicle roll forward easily at idle?
I also wonder if a pad may have separated from the backing since it was frozen. It's not unheard of. Watch for any scoring on the rotors, or better yet, pull the wheels and look. -- Better to have it and not need it, then need it and not have it. |

The pads, most probably semi metallic in composition, were likely rust bonded to the rotor surface.

 | reply to alkizmo i have a winter and summer car, my summer car has 4 wheel discs, i park it in october and bring it out in my, never had a problem, usually major rust from being in the snow. my truck that i store in the summer last year when i got it out i had a lining come away in the back drums felt like i had square wheels on the car, if you had a lining in a drum rolling around you would feel it, the secondary car, what kind of brakes does it have? |

Well I don't feel anything. It is getting better, almost no more noise. All I hear now is the crappy engine's rough idling
As for what kind of brakes, no clue. Probably the cheapest one available as that is all I invest in that car for replacement parts. It's a Mazda 626 2000 with 190k KM on it.
It suffices for my 6km transit to work. |

Does your Mazda have disc brakes at all 4 wheels or disc brakes only on the front and drum brakes on the rear? -- Whats the point of owning a supercar if you cant scare yourself stupid from time to time? |

Well just glad to say all the noise is gone and the breaks work like a champ...
but my exhaust crack fix was crap Sure it doesn't sound like a rusty old Harley anymore, but it's pretty loud.
Above is the diagram of my exhaust. The red line is where it broke off. The green square is the joint that's still attached.
I think I will have to soak it with Jigaloo, remove it, hope the other side of the joint is functional, then find a short pipe with a coupler of the same size. |
|
 | check the motor mounts. that is exactly where Mazda 626 exhaust breaks with a bad front or rear mount. also...rough idling......mounts |
|
alkizmo join:2007-06-25 Pierrefonds, QC kudos:1 1 edit | Mounts cause rough idling, or rough idling can also cause exhaust breaks?
Because it's idling pretty rough due to an acting up EGR.
I'm still trying to keep that car in action because it's only a backup car that does absolutely no more highway. Only local driving to go to the hardware store, grocery store and work (Work is local).
We don't want to buy a "new" used car for backup, especially since we did without the backup one for 9 months (But it wasn't very convenient). |
