So to get the benefits of 800Mhz I need a new phone? Or is this just a firmware upgrade?

800Mhz will work for voice/3G, but not sure about LTE. Probably not upgradeable. 800 LTE may not appear until 2014 so if you upgrade regularly, you'll likely have a new phone by then.
