Re: Trash removal question Ours is about $54/quarter for a 96 gallon container, extra bags as long as it's not every single pickup, large items once per month, and yard waste included. Recycling is extra, which is crazy since they make money off of those, I would think. So I don't recycle.
We have Waste Management now. Our city decided to negotiate a deal with them and have them exclusively for residential. We used to have 3 or 4 different companies that picked up residential trash.

Prior to 2011, the recycling side of our garbage pickup ended up costing the city money or barely broke even. The revenues generated by selling the recycled material did not pay for the bi-weekly pickup.
In January 2011, the city's waste contract switched from a pre-sorted bin requirement to a single stream system with a large bin (or you could opt for a smaller one if you preferred). Since switching, recycling participation is up, from 34% to 72% participation) and the program is bringing in revenues. Profits are split 50/50 with the hauler and last I heard the city made around $500k, plus there was an additional $500k saved as less trash ended in the landfill. | | |

kudos:2 | We recycle A LOT. In a one-week period, with a family of (5), we may have (2) trash bags (standard, kitchen-size, 16-18 gallon (??)). We will fill a 96-gallon recycle bin plus 2 x 32-gallon containers. Admittedly, a lot of recycle stuff we have doesn't 'compact' well.
Before the 32-gallon or 96-gallon bins, the city wanted to charge me extra for add'l bins ! I asked "it saves the city money by me recycling, yes ?" and they answered "yes". Then I asked them what the logic is in charging residents and potentially discouraging recycling and the clerk understood and arranged to get us one. She even suggested/offered to include recycle *stickers* for anything that doesn't fit in the bin(s) !
Later, when they made the 96-gallon bins available, I accumulated 2-3 of the 32-gallon bins. When I requested the big bin, they told me I have to turn in the smaller ones. Again, I had to explain, I'm filling 2 x 32-gallon bins and have extra and that I *need* more than just the 96-gallon bin. She said "they're supposed to exchange your 32 with the 96 bin" and I asked "what if they can't get to the 32 ?" and she said "that will work and they'll still leave the larger bin".  | |
