avoiding GWB

I'm taking a ride up to Rhode Island this week from NJ and in the past I have take the usual route over the GWB. Would usually hit traffic no matter what time I left but now with the construction, I want to avoid altogether. I've always noticed the Tappan Zee Bridge to usually avoid some of the major delays. I was wondering how I can get to the Tap and avoid the GWB to get out of NJ. Is that possible? If not, what route would anyone recommend in getting out of NJ heading north along I-95?

Get over to either 9W or the Palisades Parkway, then on to the Thruway to the TZ.

Or stay on 9W up to 84 in Newburgh, then 84 to US-7 in Danbury, down to 95 in Norwalk. A bit longer but nicer scenery and you completely avoid the NYC-Westchester maelstrom.

I think I will take 9W and either stay on it up to 84 or hop on the thruway. Thanks so much for the suggestions.

and the toll is only $1.00 round trip as opposed to the $12 at the GWB

Zero reason to go down 7 to 95. Youll only hit major traffic on the Northeast Corridor. Take 84, a much less traveled path across Connecticut, to 90 East just over the border in Mass. Catch Route 146, which is exit 10A, which will take you into Providence.

That is the longest route option. The 90/84 junction is often farkled, and 146 is notorious for being a total fustercluck as well.

84-7-95 is the easiest for someone who isn't familiar with the lay of the land. Or, 84-691-91-3-2-395-6, which is more direct.

The question is how to cross the Hudson.

I am trying to avoid adding a lot more time to the route. I'm heading up for pleasure but don't want to be in the car for a whole lot extra time. I think 84 to 7 to 95 will work best. I'm not leaving until about 10:30 a.m. so I am hoping some of the worst traffic will have subsided by that time.

You should be fine that time of day. You might hit some midday lunchtime traffic on 9W in New Windsor, and again coming through the City of Newburgh around Broadway (17K) on the way to the bridge. You should have smooth sailing down 7, with volume picking up between the Merritt and the 95 junction. Once you're east of Bridgeport, you should be in the clear. My guess is the trip will take 3 1/2 to 4 hours door to door.

Toll is now $1.50 cash / $1.25 E-ZPass effective January 29.
