Can't get people to listen...

I will keep this short since it happen this morning.. So we have a church renting out a school auditorium and last week the breaker tripped..

OK lets run down here...

mind you this is all plugged into the same outlet on a 20 A breaker which acts like it does not want to reset..

So you have two large fans at 2.54 A each..

Small fan at 1.33 A and another small one at 1.5 A

Plus a sound mixer and two 2600 W amps that pull about 15 A

and they had a electrician come over this morning to try and figure out why the breaker is tripping... IMHO the guy looked like he wanted to get out fast but they were saying it must be something under the stage...

I ended up getting into a argument with the women I know because she was like I can't allow you to touch the breaker and I was like OK fine but let me tell you.. she kept cutting me off then she acts like she wants to fight me?? I started laughing and walked out..

Mind you this is the same lady that says you can't use those extension cords because they draw too much power and to use a 7 outlet strip instead.. OK to what invite more people to plug in??

Oh man what's next???

Sounds like they might benefit from some experience with science. They've got the hypothesis thing figured out but now they need some evidence, a control, data and a conclusion.

Just tell them the truth: The breaker is working just fine. Add up the loads on the whiteboard and tell them they can reduce their loads below the breaker rating or they can trip breakers.

But I thought the electrician would of been smart enough to know..

You're spoiled by the electricians on here.

My answer would be find a new church. I wouldn't want to be around people that act like that.

The thought had crossed my mind... however if I left it would fall apart pretty quick.. but I have left for almost a year once... I had them pretty much begging me to come back.

I am confused.

Who are you? What is your role here, and level of expertise?
Who are "they"?
And who is the woman? And what authority does she have to tell you not to touch anything?

Sounds like the electrician didn't want to get into that mess. I am curious about a point of clarification though. The mixer and two amps, are those 15A all total or 15A per amp? Either way they are overloaded for sure and yeah I suggest a math lesson for them.
2.54+2.54+1.33+1.5+15 = 22.91A

And what's up with this woman? Who is she in the church? And was she trying to stop you from resetting the breaker or were you trying to stop her?

I'm curious about your amperage measurements, did you actually measure it or are those nameplate ratings? Either way if it tripped, you're overloaded.

And about her extension cord comment, she is slightly right but probably doesn't realize how. Long extension cords can cause voltage drop (especially if the conductors aren't sized for the load/length) which in turn causes the device being powered to draw more amperage to continue to run. Mathematical example (assuming 1.0 PF): 1500W load at 120V - 12.5A, same 1500W load at 110V - 13.64A. A mere 10V decrease caused a 1A rise in that scenario. That's not to say her idea of outlet strips are any better, in fact they can often be worse.

15 A with the two combined they draw about 2.4 each idle with no sound output.. I know how much the two draw since I was testing them back when I was going to run it on a generator, I also used a clamp meter to double check.

Speaking of that I should freak her out and bring my clamp meter...

Also this women she's not really over anything.. I guess she was trying to stop me from touching the panel period I was unable to get a word in then she steps out of her high heals and gets in my face I just walked out.. don't have time for it.

and the extension cords they use they are only for the fans and only 10 ft long, I know about the voltage drop on long runs but 10 Ft is not a long run...

I do Audio Visual at the old location I did a bit of inspections.. a few pictures here have been posted crazy wire runs...

She's nothing but a member who is allowing us to use the school but did not want to hear my reason why the breaker kept tripping... So she had the guy come over (electrician) and his thing was "it must be something under the stage" ..... anyways we have to move all our stuff now to the rear which is on another circuit otherwise it's going to trip.. and I can't say how it's going to be next week as well..

Re: Can't get people to listen...

Ahhh OK. Yeah I figured it was 15A all total because otherwise that would be WAY over right off the bat. I'm gonna guess the electrician's "something under the stage" was code for "run a new circuit" LOL.

So this lady is with the school or church? If she is with the school and you are with the church and the building belongs to the church, I fail to see how she has ANY control over anything. But then again that doesn't stop people from sticking their noses where it doesn't belong. And then getting defensive and even offensive about it? Might I suggest Valium or something similar to that for her?

Good, I figured you knew about voltage drop. 10 foot isn't that long and won't induce much drop, if any, provided it isn't vastly undersized for the load. Given it's only used for the fans, I'd say you're likely fine.
