Re: Who's Upgrading to Mountain Lion?

Personally I just like seeing who's as big of a geek as I am, and which new features that has everyone excited ...
I could care less about the complainers and the antique roadshow crew.

I agree, when I first read this thread and non compatibility with Mac Pro's popped up it got my attention. But my old early 2009 Pro 4.1 will be good to go after reading the thread links.

Sadly my old Macintosh IIx won't make it..

Hey There, Voter! Do you remember that on Inauguration Day (Jan 20th) 2009, the national average for a gallon of gasoline was about $1.78? How's that "Hope & Change" working out for you? Anyone But Obama Nov. 2012.

I've been so pissed ever since I found out my 128K Mac wouldn't run System 4.

Except nowadays the restrictions are more artificial, rather than technical... There's no reason why Apple couldn't simply disable the graphical effects for those machines with slower integrated GPU's... That's all it is, nothing more... And they could upgrade the damn firmware to EFI64. They just don't want to.

The issue isn't graphics effects, AFAIK. It's that for those older machines, there's only 32-bit GPU drivers available. Mountain Lion requires all Kernel Extensions to be 64-bit.

Apple could've paid somebody to rewrite the drivers, but I guess they didn't want to.

The Devil's Advocate would say that only supporting machines 3 years old or newer significantly reduces the number of machines Apple has to support at any given time, meaning that each one will be more fully supported with better drivers.

Apple also doesn't do reduced graphics on Macs. The "experience" is always the same on all machines for a given version of the OS.

I don't think that's true. They have scaled back effects in the past when the hardware wasn't up to it. One admittedly small example is the translucent menu bar. On older Macs, I believe the only option is to have the standard, grey bar. On newer Macs, it defaults to translucent. I feel like there were other examples too in the Jaguar/Tiger days when GPU-driven UI elements were becoming more ingrained in the OS, but I can't think of any at the moment.

There is an insane number of new features. And god did they have to change the names of like EVERYTHING? I kinda hate it that they keep changing everything. Snow Leopard is bulletproof and so was Leopard. Seems like the Apple SW guys think we are idiots that get bored easily and constantly need new features to keep us interested or we will freak out and go buy a pc.

I like Gatekeeper, swipe tabs in Safari will be neat. Dictation's prob gonna put Dragon for Mac out of business.

I dont like how much it is trying make my REAL computer look and feel like an iPhone. Examples, notification center, swiping everything, dictation is SIRI'ish, prob others im forgetting now.

Oh yea, dumb ass name...

Already running it. Everything is just as smooth as 10.7, no glaring issues with the software itself for me. Parallels needed to be updated, and Vox isn't working but everything else is perfect as far as I can tell.

When I installed, it didn't migrate my Exchange account mailboxes correctly and ended up just deleting everything in Sent and Trash. I can live without the trash, but I lost 5 years of sent emails.

I have them backed up on a time machine volume, but I can't restore Lion mail files to a Mountain Lion machine through the interface.

No errors popped up, and I only have one exchange account so I'm not sure how common the problem is. Just a little beware.

Thanks. That's what I guessed. I hope that, like with Lion, the Developer puts one out that will work with ML.

Still on 10.6.8 and staying with it. No regrets, no headaches.

Strangely enough, I started playing an Apple Lossless file and it's working fine. I'm going to have to poke around a little more with it.

Edit: Confirmed. MP3 files are the only ones causing any sort of issue. ALAC and AAC+ files are playing great.

Thanks. I have over 100GB of .flac files. I'll check their Forum, but I may have to wait until ML is released to see if people can play them.

Edit: Not a good sign. It looks like their Forum (the Vox Forum) has turned into a Spam Haven that seems to not be moderated.

I could be wrong, and cannot find it on Lion (but remember seeing it with SL), but I have a mid 2010 iMac that I thought has both 32 and 64 bit Kernel Extensions. Am I correct? It's only 2 years old so it should work with ML, I hope.

Re: Who's Upgrading to Mountain Lion?

I’m guessing it would run ML just fine. However, there may be some existing 32bit extensions that wont work with ML.

Older versions of OS X will of course have a mix of 32-bit and 64-bit extensions. I believe (although I haven't run ML yet to see) that all required extensions are now 64-bit. Any third-party extensions will have to be updated.

FWIW, on my 2011 MBP, every installed kernel extension is 64-bit on Lion.

I seem to remember when Tiger came out with Dashboard, that Macs that didn't have good enough video cards didn't have the "ripple" effect in Dashboard.

They've done it before. They can do it again.
