Upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for $39.99!

We set out to make it as easy as possible for everyone to upgrade to Windows 8. Starting at general availability, if your PC is running Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 you will qualify to download an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro for just $39.99 in 131 markets. And if you want, you can add Windows Media Center for free through the “add features” option within Windows 8 Pro after your upgrade.

When you use Windows.com to purchase an upgrade to Windows 8 Pro, the Windows 8 Upgrade Assistant makes upgrading simple by walking you through the upgrade process step-by-step from purchase to download and then of course installation.

»windowsteamblog.com/windows/b/bl···-99.aspx

They even give you the option to download the ISO and burn it for your very own bootable DVD or USB media stick so you can do a clean install of Windows 8 any time you need to.

$39.99 for a brand new windows 8 key sounds like a very good deal to me

Me too!

And here I just said in another thread that I wouldn't upgrade until I bought a new PC with Windows 8 on it. This offer is making me rethink things. I wonder if I can buy it and then wait to install until SP1 or SP2 is out?

Very tempting. Thanks.

Sounds like a great way to get everyone off the ancient codebase.

Interesting,….

Should this not devalue Windows 7 license pricing as well,….at least for upgrades. I do like to hear of the free Media Center upgrade for Windows 8 though,….nice touch. I still plan to buy a Technet subscription though so this isn’t for me.

Did they not use the same NT code base from 20 years ago that they have been using for all the other versions ?

Not sure what you mean by "anymore"? Windows keys are either valid or they aren't. They don't expire (except for pre-release versions).

Yep. Kinda like *nix. Not too many changes needed in a kernel.
But seriously, XP is a little dated. We should get Mele off it.

Funny how there is no information about this on the Microsoft site! The attached story also does give any link to the information. Until I see that I'm betting this probably isn't true!

The original link is to the official (Microsoft) Windows blog, and the posts are by Microsoft employees (those on the "Windows" team).

Wrong! I'm buying a new computer BEFORE Windows 8 is released so I can get Win 7. $40 seems sort of high as the OEMs as of NOW are offering upgrades to any new Win 7 computer bought for only $15. But I won't be taking "advantage" of that. Why doesn't Microsoft offer Win 7 with a Reinstallation CD for this price? I hate that Dell no longer offers reinstallation disks for any price.

Heh - First thing I did was verify that windowsteamblog.com was in fact a Microsoft-owned domain.

Still not interesting in Windows 8 though. Win7 is far from "ancient", and that Metro interface looks neither inviting or very functional.

This is a cheap deal but the problem is a clunky interface and kill switches. Most people frown at the idea of some corporation being able to remotely kill your apps.

I would have to say it's a good price but I don't like an OS that is centered around my email like some facebook social operating system. M$ has said this system was aimed at people who own tablets and not people using desktops. This is a deal breaker for me and no reason to upgrade..

If this was for Windows 7, I'd jump on it. As it is, since based on history Windows 8 is scheduled to suck, I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft's plan is to get as many people as possible to upgrade to an OS they're not going to like, so that they'll be motivated to pay full price when the next version is released. (I assume this license won't have downgrade rights?)

However, I'd be delighted to be wrong and have already put this on my calendar to evaluate in January. All our machines at work still run Windows XP, but we'll eventually have to upgrade when we need more than 4GB of RAM.

I paid about ~$50 for each Vista license (two free licenses as well) and about ~$50 for each Windows 7 license (again two free licenses). From my perspective things are getting cheaper since if I recall XP cost me more,...

I still run WinXP on my office machine.

I have yet to hear any reason why any newer version offers me any benefits....

Probably if MS had bothered to make an easy upgrade path from XP to Win7, I would have done it.
